78.0. "Nov/Dec Fishing" by DONMAC::MACINTYRE (Terminal Angler) Fri Oct 18 1991 14:17

The talk about the season being almost over led me to thinking about
what other stubborn folks do when the nights start dipping below
    freezing on a daily basis.

For boat owners without garages, this time of year has potential for
damaging your motor. You don't want water freezing in your lower unit.
And the more often you fish this time of year, the more you increase
    the odds of that happening.

I make sure I lower my trim down all the way when I park the boat, to
let all the water drain out.

Since alot of the fishing I do in late fall or early winter is for
trout, my plan is to eventually finish restoring my `55 Old Town guide
boat and use that with a small old outboard when the mercury drops.
This way I could store my bass boat earlier.

Another type of fishing that I'm considering to try during this time
of year was walleye fishing on the Conn River. Boomer, you going after
walleye on the conn. this weekend?

Warm water discharges on the rivers are a 'hot spot' that I try and hit
    when it starts getting cold.

What do some of you others do in late fall or early winter?

    Donmac,

Come the 1st of November my attention gets turned toward ringnecks,
quail, and turkey. About the only fishing I do is remembering the past
summer and planning for the May trip to the BWCA. I try to look around
for clearances on tackle etc., but that's about the extent of it.

Smelt. Need I say more? Of course, the Salem power plant will have
bluefish for a few more weeks. The codfishing should be good right up
until all the boats go to sleep for the winter. (and then the
    codfishing will get better)

Still going, yesterday Tim and I scraped a 1/4 inch of ice
of the SWEET DREAM II before heading out. We fished tillies and
got some Cod but not the big day I had hoped for. The inshore
stuff has not really turned on yet. Another week or
two and thats it for me and then I start smelting.

78.5last saturday for mePENUTS::GORDONWed Oct 23 1991 12:4613
Last Saturday was it for me, pulled the boat as they are taking the
slips out for the winter-- wish I lived closer to all salt water
someetimes. Every year just after I pull the boat the weather turns
calm and warm and I wish I had something to pull the trailer with for a
    days fishing.

Now it's on to winterizing, cleaning/fixing reels and equipment, and
making modifications to the boat and gear. And painting the house--Yuk

I suppose this time is needed to get everything in order for the next
season. If I lived down south my wife would be mad all the time.

I'm not ready to pack the boat and tackle away until at least Thanksgiving.
I'm sure the wife has other plans, but what they hell...we have to argue
about something! Right?

Went out last Saturday...smallies were all down deep...25-30' down. With
the nice weather upon us thru the weekend, I'm gone!

78.9First 90' Launch...CAPL::LANDRY_DWed Oct 23 1991 15:3730
I'm not bothered by all those hauling in there boats and doing
	winterizing.....

I just bought my first boat ever. 1990 19' SeaNymph CC191 Stripper
with 1991 70hp Johnson Outboard. She's Aluminum with Center Console.
Although a 90' she's brand new and never been in the water.
Got her for a good price. She came with two aerated live wells,
Lowrance X-20 Sonar Graph Liquid Crystal Display Fish/Depth finder,
Stereo AM/FM radio, Bimini Top/Trailer etc etc.
	I've put in a Compass,Ship-to-Shore Radio,diving platform,4 chrome
in transom rod holders and got all the safety stuff to boot.

I "WAS" going to wait for the November 1992 Boat Trailer registration
period but went nuts with this weather. I got the trailer hitch
and trailer plates yesterday. The boat will be ready this Friday.
	Taking a vacation day.
Will try her out on Webster Lake with family first Friday afternoon.
Saturday I'm heading for the 3R Marina Newburyport and may fish
	all night Saturday night.
Yes I know there pulling the docks out. I went there this past
Sunday but was told they will have a small section still in place
for this weekend. "I hope so" or it's to Salisbury Reservation.

I will fish till my ice pick wears down.
"EVERYONE" I talked to on Plum Island and around say's the fish
come in at the same time the boats come out.

Sounds like Deer Hunting to me?

78.10Break that engine in right!!!SEMIU5::MATTSONThu Oct 24 1991 09:2511
    Dick,
Congrats, nice boat, Sea Nymph is an excellent brand with a 10 year
hull warranty. Remember you've got to break in your new engine per the
specs in the owners manual. I don't know if one day out on Webster
will accomplish that. So I'd be careful out there in the Salt Water
the next day. I wouldn't venture to far out. It's not uncommon for
the plugs to foul out on you very easily during breakin. So have fun
    but be careful.

78.11Thanks for advice...CAPL::LANDRY_DThu Oct 24 1991 09:4327
Madd Matt,
	Appreciate your safety tips.
Per your advice I will not go out far off shore.
Just talked to Deccie friend of mine.
He and some friends caught 32 Stipper's of Plum Island a few wks ago.
	From the Shore!!!
No keepers but lot's of fun.

He may be out there again this weekend so I'll be hugging the shore.
Maybe bounce a few bar's. (sand that is!!!)

I have a Ship/Shore Radio but he recommended I get a CB as he
monitor's it all the time for fishing chatter. My wife would
love to be able to communicate with me on the boat from shore/car.
Do you or does anyone know what channels would be best and
where I can get a good deal on two CB's quickly.
I'd prefer a portable and don't like to put another antannae on my car?
He recommended a 5W with 6 channels and to monitor
	Ch 15 for boat talk
	Ch 22 for Beach talk
	Ch 19 for Trucks
Any other suggestions for the remaining 3 Ch???

I'd really appreciate some help as I want to get them tonight.
If anyone can help call me DTN:234-4503

78.12airwavesDONMAC::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerThu Oct 24 1991 10:4510
Most CBs offer the max watt. allowed (5W sounds about right). Haven't
come across any CB which monitor 6 channels. Cobra is a good name in
CBs, I have a Cobra in my truck with 3 weather channels. I put it in my
truck for my annual trips down south. The weather channels are great
while on fishing trips. (your boat radio probably already has weather
channels though). Mine was about $130 at service merchandise. K40
makes a nice antenna for cars/trucks. I know there are CB antennas
manufactured for boats but I'm not familiar with them. Down in Fla a
few years ago we tried portable CBs between boats and they were too
much of a pain to bother with. -donmac
78.13To CB or not to CB?CAPL::LANDRY_DThu Oct 24 1991 11:3118
-donmac,
	Good feedback.
I talked to the dealer and he says that they make a portable
VHF so that I could get that for my wife to use to talk to me
on the Ship-to-Shore I have on the boat. Of course I could not
	talk to the CB'rs?

So delima is 1 VHF for my wife
1 VHF for my wife and 1 CB for boat
		     2 CB's (1 for wife 1 for boat)

The CB's would be portable as I'm not too keen on more antenae's (yet?)

Will stop by Service Merchandise and check out the goods on way home.
	thanks again

Good luck out there at plum Island. Watch out for the mouth of the
river. I hear there are plenty of stripers around and the really big
ones are just starting to come down from up north. They should be
hitting on the ocean front. You will know the good spots as there will
be beach vechicles there. Don't forget the river, badgers rocks and
the plum I. river. I here two kids 9&10 both got 40+lb stripers in the
    essex river last week.

    fishing on a Friday.

What location do you call badgers rocks? I believe Emerson Rocks
are off the beach at the very last parking lot of the Island..
Also off the beach near parking lot (?) is a location where a granite
barge went down years ago. A good fishing spot off a boat. It's
    marked on the charts.

    re: .17

Badgers rocks are located insine the merrimack river on the salisbury
side. they are exposed from about half tide down. They are directly
across the river from the old coast guard station on plum island. This
is a really good spot for stripers, but you have to be careful. People
fish eels and pogies on the downtide side of this structure.

Yes its going to be warm this weekend. It will also be FOGGY. Even the
ponds in the morning have had 0 visablility. I would plan your
trip late in the day as the river will be socked in in the AM.
If you have never been out in the fog you will be amazed by how quickly
you can see nothing and how quickly you will be disoriented.
    Stay safe.

78.21Warm mild breeze and calm sea... CAPL::LANDRY_DMon Oct 28 1991 09:5237
Weekend was great on Merrimack River and Ocean.
Absolutely calm ocean and nice warm air.
Launched our new boat from 3R Marina.
Paid the $10/day weekend rate including Sunday as I was planning
	on fishing the night away.
I launched her alone at 10:30am and took her out about 2 miles East
of the North Jetty got to 100ft of water then headed back.
Spotted fish on finder in the River and some all the way out 2 miles.
Got back in and my wife joined me at 4:00pm.
We went back out and did some trolling with no luck.
We did get plenty of Mackerel
My wife inaugurated our new boat with the first fish caught
and for the weekend the biggest fish caught. Both Mackerel.
The largest was about a 2-3lb er. Released it.
Kept six in the live bait well and did use two for stiper bait with
no luck on Sunday fishing off the Plum Island beach near the church.
We release all the Mackerel before heading in.
I did stay till Midnight Saturday night fishing the flat's
south of the toothpick in shallow water but no luck.

Thanks for Badger's Rocks info and as I've fished the Merrimack
many years ago with a pro from Digital Westfield I know some of the
hazards in/out of the Merrimack. I wouldn't fish the rocks untill
my wife and I become more proficient with our new boat. But it
is a great location for Bass.

The Ship/Shore radio was nice to have. Heard two MayDay's called
one a prank and the other real. Small boat sinking off Salem Harbor
with two on board. Did not hear results.

As for radio I did not get any CB or portable VHF.
Does anyone know how much the license is for the one I have.
I have the forms and they say send in the amount but no amount listed
	for the application?

78.26Shad Rap for largemouth Oct 27NECVAX::HUTCHINSONWed Oct 30 1991 18:2123
Don't remember fishing into the fall before, and don't know much
about pigs-n-jigs or even rubber worms, but the largemouths were
eager to ingest that Shad-Rap chunky Rapala fished fairly slow
& shallow last Sunday up here in NH. They were not nearly so
interested in anything I tried on top of the surface, no matter how
    slow.

First-light seemed to last for about five hours from 6:00 to 11:00
in the dense fog. Rare morning. Caught and released more fish
    than I could count - 30?

After the sun broke through, I learned from the emergency room doctor
that you remove a fishhook from flesh by turning it through rather
than applying muscle to the needle-nose pliers & hacking with the
Swiss Army knife as I had tried unsuccessfully. I'll remember that.
I made such a mess and it was so easy for him.

Saturday morning in the surf at low tide I got nothing. I want
    a boat!

I do hope we get some more of last weekend's weather.

If any of you folks are still thinking about fishing for
smallmouth bass in Winnipesaukee, you might find it useful to know that
they are hanging out at 50-70 feet these days. That's where we saw the

The only things seen in 10-30 feet were yellow perch and white sucker.

We tired Tims Bait shop but it was not open :-(
Took the FishTeaser out 3 miles as the ocean was very calm.
Tried some trolling/jigging but no luck.
Drove to Hampton Harbour and went under bridge.
Current was pretty fast and swells pretty rough going in/out of mouth.
The mouth of the Merrimack was calm everytime we went in/out.

Not many other's out. Saw maybe 3 other fishing boats and lobster boats.

We saw around 40 Harbour seals hanging around Badger's rocks.
We stopped engine and drifted right amongst them. My daughter
Kelley tried feeding them Saltines ;^) She was all kinds of excited.

May go again this weekend with the wife who stayed home and did

Will also try Harwichport at Thanksgiving wind/weather permitting.

My wife and I launched out of Hampton yesterday at around noon. I
also noticed big waves at the mouth, but it was calm everywhere else.
This is not typical for Hampton...It was the highest/lowest tides
I've seen in Hampton Harbor. It appeared that some roads were almost
underwater on the side away from the beach. When we came back in, an
hour before low tide I had to back the trailer off the end of the
concrete ramp to load the boat! What gives ??? My tide book didn't
mention anything exceptional, although it was a new moon...As far as
the fishing goes, we caught a couple of small Cod a few miles out, an
I played around with some mackeral on the ultra light...Sure was nice
out there weather wise :-) I had hoped we would get into more fish

re: -1
Thanks for update on Hampton harbour and unusual wave action.
Ever since the dredger worked the Merrimack R. entrance I haven't
seen the action like the good ole day's 8^0
I was at Hampton harbour around the same time you launched at noon.
	Most likely 12:30-1:00pm ish.

While entering the river going under the bridge we saw a camouflaged
powerboat with two souls aboard heading out. Maybe this was you's?

Going in/out of Hampton harbour we were humming along in our
	19' SeaNymph center console white/blue w/FM antennae/Flag pole/rods
70hp outboard. Maybe ya seen us in passing?

Last time I went into Hampton harbour was an emergency stop from
bouncing the FishTeaser "on" the Isle of Shoals. Came in with bent
prop in the fog and low on fuel. Took taxi to Salisbury State Park
and got my car. (my fist year with a boat)

    We were in a 19ft Wellcraft...It's gray and white with a 175 OMC I/O.
It has 4 bigjon rod holders on the back, but the downriggers are not
on at this point. By 1:00 we were anchored about a mile from the
outermost red can. I saw one boat go by that may have been you. Did
you head straight out from Hampton and make a run of maybe 10 miles or
    so???

So you hit the isle of shoals once ??? Ouch...I always thought that
with the waves and current out there that if I got close enough to
hit something it would be all over...It's scary to get near the reefs
or shore and realize that if the motor died you'd probably get beat to
death on the rocks in about two waves!

re:-1
When I came out of Hampton Harbour I headed south along the shore
right back to the Merrimack River. I didn't head offshore from
that point. I don't remember seeing a boat like yours near
	Hampton Harbour. Maybe next time.

I bounced off the shoals prolly 10 times. Most of the rocks
were below water line. My daughter and her girlfriend were with me.
They wanted to walk on the Island. I let them off fine as the water
was extrememly calm. They had a portable CB. I anchored and had
lunch facing the Island watching them search around and talking to
them on my CB. All of a sudden I noticed the boat rolling a bit
and turned around to see a storm approacing fast. I called the girls
but they gave me some BS about wanting to search some more. I finally
gave them some %#^$& words which got their attention. By the time
I pulled anchor and got near shore the waves were pretty rough.
I know now I should have told them to walk to the dock's on the
protected inlet but Nooooooo I aproached shore to get them off and
the boat bounced many times on underwater rocks "HARD". I lost
a new 30' mooring line, bent my telescoping boat hook and dented
one of the blades on my prop. I managed to get them aboard and
get away from the shoals right as the rain/wind/fog hit. Fortunately
I took bearings on my way over and heading to Merrimack R. By the
time the storm died down I was running out of gas as I could not
keep the engine at full rev's due to the vibration from the bent prop.
I eventually made it to Hampton Harbour and took a cab to get my car.
My daughter now know's that when I "ask" her to do something while
with me on the boat she listen's very well ;^)

Those shoals are not pretty when your bouncing up and down, up and down,
up and down on them "HARD".

Although I took Coast Guard Boating and Navigation 13 week course
it's expierence that really counts in the long run. I'm sure glad
I did take the training as it sure came in handy then and other times.

78.38Done for Winter :-(CAPL::LANDRY_DWarbirds 1939-1945Mon Nov 29 1993 11:4844
I took the "FishTeaser" down the Cape for the T'day weekend.
Nobody else wanted to go out on the ocean with me Friday 26-Nov :-(
I launced from Allens Harbour in Harwichport.
It was in the 40's and crystal clear day with no wind and flat ocean.
I had 3 frozen mack's aboard but was going for a cruise first and
	fishing second ;-)
Drove to southern tip of Monomoy Island and saw an anchored boat
and as I approaced they shot at me 8-O I figured they were shooting
at me because they missed the duck that was flying over their boat ;^)

I continued and drove to the east side of Monomoy to Bearse shoals.
Did some drift fishing and trolling but no luck. It was flat out
there and at no time was I ever cold. No spay came over the
"FishTeaser"'s bow as there were no waves anywhere.
Beautiful cruise alone on the ocean. Not crowded at all :-)

Saturday there was gale warnings in effect so my brother-in-law took
me trout fishing at a large pond nearby. We caught some shiners with
a small net for bait. He caught a couple of yellow perch and moved
to another spot. I moved to his spot to at least catch somethin and
caught two of them. He was leaving them ashore to deplete the pond
of the "trash fish" but I released all mine. He wanted me to move
but I just wanted to have some fun doing catch & release. Then.....
Zappppp I hooked a nice 15" Rainbow Trout which jumped clear out
of the water twice as I reeled it in. Beautiful fish.

I decided to keep this one as my wife love's Trout and so do I.

We fished till dark but that was the only trout. We did manage
to catch over 50 yellow perch. But my brother-in-law contests
that the 20 or so I caught was the same fish I kept releasing ;^)

As soon as we got to his house I powdered the trout up with
some flour/salt/pepper and oil fried it in a black skillet.
It's pink meat was awesome to the taste :^)

Nice weekend to remember the last "FishTeaser" trip of the year.
