Well I thought I'd add a little fishing story here about the one that
did not get away. I landed a 9 lb Rainbow trout this past weekend
using my ultralight pole with 6 lb test. I caught it on a 1/8 oz
Rooster tail rainbow color. I let 'em fight for about 10 min to
wear him out then landed 'em. Made for quite a feast this weekend.

The place is called Parkway Lakes. Its a local place that is stocked
weekly with sturgeon and trout. Its off hiway 101 and metcalf road.

It's easier to go down montery road to metcalf and turn left. You
    can't miss it.

does anyone know where the Gulf of Farallones National Marine
Sanctuary is ? I just read an article about 47,500 corroaded and
collapsed drums of radioactive waste in an around the Sanctuary.
NOAA is to finance a $900,000 study to see if they are leaking.
Story sez tests of the fish in the area and worms living on the bbls
show no unusual radiation levels, but sonar records show serious
    corrosion.

I was wondering if anyone has charts of that area and if so, whats
the depth of water we're talking about.

I expect it's DEEP , but maybe it's just "outta sight outta my
    back yard ..."

not sure if this has hit the press out there, thought it
might be of interest and if anyone has charts on the wall
it'd be the fishy types thinking about were they'd rather
    	be ...

| | Not sure about the "gulf" part, but the Farallones are a small group
of islands about 20-25 miles off of San Francisco. I don't know the
details, but they've been dumping "stuff" out there for years.
Periodically, commercial fishermen will come up with WWII vintage
torpedoes in their nets. Live ones. Toxic waste, nuclear waste,
assorted industrial by-products, and various excess ordinance are laying
around here and there. Alot of rock fish are caught by people on
cattle-boats, but I'd think twice about eating it.

As a sidebar, I once caught a 25lb. Golden-eye and won the boat pot
out there. It's a beautiful place, and the islands are a favorite
destination for sport fishermen, as well as day sailors, although I
believe that the islands themselves are off-limits.

"unknown" goop but when I heard about this site I was
    	amazed.

Don't want to ramble too much here, but if anyone

of unknown contents and am working on ways to raise such things
safely (for the operator and the environment) and radiation
scares the hell out of me.

samples of the lake superior bbls I understand got caught by

| 65.18 | fish arrowhead!!! | ODIXIE::RHARRIS | Ultralight forever | Mon Jan 13 1992 16:48 | 26 |
| | Back to Irvine lake for a second. I am in Georgia, and have been here
for over 5 years now, but when I lived in Huntington Beach, Irvine lake
was one of the lakes on the weekend circuit. Fishing habits don't
change at Irvine lake, so here is my rendition of how to fish it, and
believe me, I have been successful there.

For baits- marshmallow salmon egg combos, marshmallow nightcrawler
combos, or inflated nightcrawlers dipped in crushed garlic. You'll
get your rod bending big time.

Lures-yellow ultrasonic roostertails, or mepps black fury's. If you
get a boat, go to sierra cove, or whatever they call it now. There is
a water intake there, and produces good current for feeding fish. Try
#18 salmon egg hooks with one egg on it, a split shot about 18" up and
drop it about 15-20 ft. Katie bar the door!!!!!!!!!!!

THE BEST TROUT FISHING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IS LAKE ARROWHEAD!!!!
But you got to know how to fish it. Native rainbows AVERAGING 5lbs.
Orange meat, not that crap genetic trash from Irvine lake. call me
at dtn 385-7201 and I will talk southern california trout with you, and
exchange info. When you make it in "WON" 4 times in 2 years, you catch
    some trout.

Why not go into it here where we can all benefit from your experience. That is,
after all, what this conference is all about. The tricks, techniques, etc. that
you used at Arrowhead may very well work in other lakes and streams as well.
I'd be happy to try new techniques here in Northern Calif, as (I presume) would
those who fish Quinsig or the Quabbin in Massachusetts, or Winnipisaukee in NH.

| 65.21 | didn't mean to step on toes | ODIXIE::RHARRIS | Ultralight forever | Tue Jan 14 1992 16:44 | 45 |
| | I sincerely hope that note .19 was not deleted due to language, because
that would mean I pissed someone off. I did not want to do that. I
just want to say that fishing at lake arrowhead is much better, the
scenery is awesome, no lines, and you save money. I have fished irvine
lake plenty of times, but that's like going to the fish market. If you
can't limit out at Irvine, give up fishing and take up golf, it still
    has hooks in it.

Now, fishing arrowhead, you got to rent a boat, since it is all private
shore. Go into blue jay bay, and troll with a "Dave Davies" (which is
a lure that is about 2-3 ft with a bunch of spoons on it, it duplicates
a school of shad or baitfish), and tied behind the dave davies use 2 lb
line and a #12 bait hook, and have a nightcrawler on the hook. YOU
WILL HOOK UP AND CATCH GOOD SIZED NATIVE RAINBOWS!!! In the spring,
troll with chartruese sonic rooster tails with two pound line around
points, and babe watch out, smallmouth fever!

As far as bait fishing at arrowhead, using roe (real trout eggs) and
marshmallows, using about 3 ft leader with egg sinker set up, tears
them up most of the time.

Now obviously there is no lie, you do not tear them up 100% of the
time, but you have a excellent chance of that 10-15 lb stringer of
4 trout. I saw Dennis Weaver (McCloud) at arrowhead one time when
we came off the boat and he said,"Gosh guys, you look like you caught
a mess of mighty fine fish."

In closing, all I can say is that Arrowhead is the BEST lake in
southern CAL to fish for trout. Big Bear is ok, but to much pressure.

Since you have to rent a boat to fish arrowhead, not many people fish
it. When I was there, it was $55 a day. But weigh that out against
Irvine lake and the price of admission EACH, boat rental, lines,
crowds, parking in line at 4 am.

That is not fishing! Fishing is getting into nature. Fishing is
sitting in your boat at arrowhead and watching a bald eagle come down
and snatch a trout out of the water right in front of you. Now that's
    real fishing.

I am now off my soapbox on arrowhead. Regardless of where you fish,
    just fish.

    Bob

I'll have to go out this weekend and see how this trolling stuff works...
I feel sorry for all those guys out there in the colder climates that will
have to wait 'til April to do much trolling. I understand launching the boats
this time of year is easy enough, just untie everything and slam on the
brakes when you get to the bottom of the ramp, the boat just slides off pretty
as you please. Getting the boat back on the trailer though is a real trick.

brett,
		!!!!!!!!!DON'T SELL THE BOAT!!!!!!!!!
I live in San Ramon, on the East side of the bay.
About 2 hours north of Palo Alto you get into the area of California's
Salmon/Steelhead rivers. A lot of Striper fishing is done in the Bay itself and
in the Sacramento River DELTA. The delta is hundreds of bays, sloughs and
canals that goes from the Bay all the way to Sacramento on the Sacramento River
and to Stockton (and beyond) on the San Joaquin River. Every year there is a
Salmon run up the delta to the spawning grounds (although the drought has
caused severe restrictions in the fishing this year). A boat on the delta has
to be able to deal with strong winds and the chop that goes with it. There are
reservoirs in the area you can fish for catfish, trout, and bass. Many of them
offer 14' aluminum rental boats for about $25/day. Fishing out of a boat is
much easier than fishing off the bank. There are lots of party boats out of
San Francisco, Emeryville, Halfmoon Bay, Santa Cruz and Bodega Bay for salmon,
halibut, sturgeon, stripers, and rock bass that charge about $45/day if you're
into that type of fishing.
Brett, unless there is an overwhelming need to unload the boat, keep it. Ramps
are not hard to find and ramp fees are not unreasonable.
