| Anybody know a reliable place to get a tide table? I hate never knowing
and none of the bait shops having any to give away... Is there a way you can
compute the tide?

| I get the Fisherman magazine and it has a table in it every week.
Usually the Globe has the tide for the day. Tide takes about thirteen
hours to complete a cycle. So, iff high tide in a given area is at 1:00
today, it will be around 2:00 tomorrow. Heavy on the around/
approximately. But, that computation is okay for a few days. There's
also a difference between the south and east coasts of Mass. High tide
in Newport R.I., which is the same as New Bedford MA, occurs 3 hours,
20 minutes before Boston. There's also a weather note somewhere, or it
was on livewire.?

Yeah, the tides in the Cape Cod Canal are great fun to try to
figure out - 3 hours difference between the east end and the west end.

Open up RAINBO::SCUBA and do a dir/title=TIDE
The tide table for Boston harbor is posted every month.
For a discusion on the futility of attempting to compute the tide, go
to the OCEANOGRAPHY conference.
Or you can go to REI or just about any outdoorsy store and buy any one
of several different books that give you the tides.
I use TIDELOG, New England Edition published by Pacific Publishers.

In Note 994.9 of the ASTRONOMY conference, CSSE::NEILSEN "Wally

Exactly so. And that's why tide tables printed in newspapers, on
calendar cards, and in Hydrographic Office tables suffice for most sea
people.
In Note 994.10, CUPMK::SLOANE, replies:
> The tides are NOT every 12.5 hours. The *average* interval is 12.5
> hours, but there is as much considerable day-to-day variation as there

> Tides are not simple repeating cycles.
Correct. This is why those wishing for computer program (see Note 124
in this conference) are likely to wait a looong time for it.
FWIW: A lunar day is more precisely 24 hours, 50 minutes and 47
seconds, which makes the aforesaid interval (half lunar day) a scosh
under 12 hours, 25 minutes, and 24 seconds

I tend to stay away from beaches because I don't like sand in my gear,
but one of the things that constantly amazes me is the apparent
accuracy of the tide table, at least around the rocky areas where I
spend saltwater time on Cape Ann. Or maybe there is a real difference
between "absolute highest wave on the beach" and high tide?

44.11 | so Hampton is 3 minutes later than Boston? | WAHOO::LEVESQUE | A question of balance... | Thu Aug 15 1991 14:18 | 7 |
| I've made a special note the last half dozen times I went out to watch how
high the waves got on the sand with relation to the high tide. It has been
consistently noted that the absolutely highest wave is never at exactly at
high tide, and has usually been about a hlaf hour later. (I check my watch
alot so I know when to pull the crabbies off my bait and reset.)

I checked the tides in the today's paper Thursday and it lists
tommorows Friday's Boston High Tide as 11:02A/11:46P or 11:02/23:16
Is the paper right or is the chart you have done for us here right?
Also the chart you provided lists same Low Tides for SAT and SUN?

| Well, there's always the possibility that I transcribed incorrectly,
though I do check it pretty thoroughly as a norm. Last month I was in
more than a little bit of a rush, though. I don't have my tables with
me, so I can't tell you what the right number is. If I listed the same
time for two days, then I undoubtedly screwed up on one of them. They
are bound to be within an 90 minutes of one another regardless.
My sincerest apologies for the inconvenience.

Appreciate the work in installing the Tide Chart information.
I alway's print out a copy and slide it into the 3 ring binder
I have aboard with other stuff for reference.
Just wanted you to know that it's being put to good use.
I was unable to get those freebee one's given away at the bait
shops for this year so am relying on your information for trip
planning.
Thanks

| I used to try and get out at the "correct time" of the tide, but now
anytime I can go is the right tide.
The merrimack is pretty flexible, a general rule for bass is low tide
at the mouth and up river at high tide. The bass chase the bait up and
down the river.

| Saturday's Lows occur at 06:00 and 18:17. High is at 12:13.
I sincerely apologize for the error. Guess that's part of the reason
I'm not very good at normal clerical chores (short attention span).

the newsletter that I always key it in for. Ouch!
Maybe by Friday. Then again, if you don't see it by then, pay close
attention to the newspaper. Ok?

Lows (feet) Highs (feet)
SAT 03:44 -1.5 09:54 11.1

SUN 04:35 -1.5 10:46 11.4
16:55 -1.4 23:08 11.8
For the mouth of the Merrimack, you can basically go by these numbers.
For further upstream, say in the Haverhill area, you can basically add
an hour to each of these. You won't be far off.

Thanks for the tide info.
FYI:
Weather permitting I'm thinking of taking the FishTeaser on Sunday am.
Will lauch from Salisbury State Park ramp at ?am then pull out <2:00pm
FishTeaser goes in tommorrow 8:00am for summerization. I'll put gear
back on her tommorrow night (non-freezable stuff). I'd be out Saturday
but have Bruins tickets :-(
Lemme know if your gonna be there.

Sorry, Folks.
I'm not doing the tides anymore. I've got too much going on with four
simultaneous ecosystem restoration projects, four publications I'm
responsible for, a family, and a 50-hour/week job at Digital. On top of
all that, I neglected to order the Tide Logs for 1995 in time for them
to be useful.
If you go over to the SCUBA conference (NOTED::SCUBA) and do a title
search on "tide," you'll find a www pointer to the MIT Scuba Club, which
has the tide tables for Boston posted each month.
