The illustrations are line drawings, but the text alone is worth the

| I've recently acquired the entire fishing portion of the Cy DeCosse
"Hunting and Fishing Library" series. My girlfriends dad is a
salesperson. Quite a nice set of books, particularly the pictures.

Well I wasnt sure if this is where to ask a question but I hope you
people could help out.
I was talking to a friend of mine from Pennsylvania, and he asked
me if I knew what a paddle fish was, I said no but I would try to find
out for him., it seems that the Pa fishi commission stocked a bunch of
paddle fish fingerlings in the allegheny river, they stated that they
mature at age's 8-10 yrs. and grow to 6 feet and weigh in at around 60
pounds.
I looked through my books last night and could not find anything on
this fish. and I was hopeing that someone with a larger library of fish
books could post a report on this species of fish.
thanks in advance

42.5 | Off the top of my head (maybe off the wall!). | GNPIKE::NICOLAZZO | Sloan Valve Co. | Fri Jan 24 1992 11:51 | 12 |
| Paddlefish are a freshwater fish native to North America which have
a paddlelike 'sword' above their mouth. I believe they are a VERY
ancient order of fish and are filter feeders (like baleen whales and
basking sharks).
I don't think they have much angling value.
Some (or most! :*) ) of this info may be wrong - just off the top of
my head.

There have been a few articles in Fur-Fish-Game regarding
paddlefish, in the last couple of years. They inhabit the Ohio
Missouri, and Missisippi basins, have the previously mentioned paddle,
and can get REAL big. Also, their roe is sometimes used as a kind of
'caviar'.
As far as their angling value, I will have to look up the articles
and review that. I know that they are protected in some areas, so
there may not be any opened seasons on them snytime soon.

I picked this book up in a bait/tackle/ammunition shop in
Hudson, NH when I was registering my boat last year. It has some
very nice drawings and photographs, and no other book I've seen
gives the same consistently concise presentation of material.
It's not comprehensive, but it's a very nice book.

42.8 | Striper Surf | 2862::STORM | | Mon Feb 22 1993 15:18 | 7 |
| I was in our town library with my 7yr old returning books when I
stumbled into Striper Surf by Frank Daignault. I enjoyed it,
particularly since reading is the closest I can get to striper
fishing this time of year :-)
