41.1Lowrance customer service?ROBOAT::HEBERTCaptain BlighTue Aug 13 1991 13:4419
A couple of weeks ago I flipped my battery switch into the "OFF" position
while the engine was running. When I noticed what I had done, I flipped
it back to a hot position. Well, if it happened again, I'd kill the
engine while the switch was OFF, throw the switch on, and restart. I
believe that while the switch was off the alternator voltage went way up,
and was momentarily present on the circuit when I switched it back. It
blew the internal fuse in my loran, and my X16 Lowrance has gone
belly-up, moving paper but not writing anything.

All that was a caution for those of you with multiple batteries and
battery switches.

Now. I looked in the Lowrance catalog for Customer Service, and it said
to look in my owner's manual. Did that. It gave me 800-331-3889. Called
that, got a recording, "that number is not in service." Do you have a
different number? Or, do you know the location of one of the "110 service
locations to ensure one is near you"?

    I just sent my x-5 in for repairs, the problem being the x-5 keep
    blowing the inline fuse. The cost was 59.90 flat rate. i am sure
    the x-16 will be more. I have the number and address at home,
    I will post it tomorrow.

41.5Lowrance NE serviceROBOAT::HEBERTCaptain BlighThu Aug 15 1991 14:1414
Well, the first number I tried was 918-437-6881. This is the number to
call to order literature, ask tech questions, or check on an order. They
gave me the 918-234-1452 number. That number is VERY BUSY. It took me
three days of almost constant dialing to get in.

The Customer Service rep I spoke with gave me the location of the closest
Lowrance/Eagle service center to me (Southern NH).

41.6keep your paper dryROBOAT::HEBERTCaptain BlighThu Aug 29 1991 14:1224
Well, my X16 came home yesterday. About a week total door-to-door
turnaround from Belchertown, Mass., where Lowrance told me to ship it.

Yes, it's fixed. $93.20 total, of which 7.95 was for parts, $5.xx was for
shipping, and the rest for "flat rate Lowrance service."

I've got to share this with you, to save you from the same experience.

       They found that my chart paper was no good.

It's authentic Lowrance paper, not generic catalog replacement. I had
replaced the roll, and was about ten feet into it when it failed while
out fishing. The paper moved, but nothing marked on the paper; no scale,
no messages, no returns. If I had put the roll on and it hadn't worked
right away, I would have suspected the paper right off.

Sure enough, new roll = normal operation.

I don't really feel stupid, because I tried a different stylus, a
different belt, and connected a different chart recorder to my power
cable and transducer switch box. My logic simply told me there was
something electronic broken inside the big black box. So much for logic.

93 bucksssssssss ouch I send mine back about every other year because
I have loose parts rattleing around inside. usually the case is changed.
That only costs me $40. I THINK I WILL TRY TO FIX IT MYSELF THIS YEAR :^(

    even replaced the scratched plastic cover.

    Hey Art, You should take a copy of the bill and send asking why
    YOU have to pay $93.20 for them discovering that you bought
    their defective product.

    Does anyone know the phone number, of The Garcia Corp? I have an old
    Mitchell 308 that I need parts for. I have an address in Teaneck NJ
    but ma bell doesn't have a listing for them. I'd like to get a current
    price before I send for the parts.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    I had the same problem a few years back. The older 308s have bronze
    gears and the newer one have nylon gears. The cost of the replacement
    parts was more than the cost of a new 308. I bought a new one.

41.18Penn Mariner reelMONTOR::HANNANBeyond description...Wed Aug 05 1992 10:3415
	I need to call Penn regarding a Super Mariner reel of theirs.
	Anyone have their phone # or location ?

	Or, does anyone know how the Clutch Dog on the Mariner works ?

	I'm overhauling the reel for a friend, and the elbow-shaped clutch
	doesn't catch. So when you're not in free spool the spool/handle
	doesn't lock and the spool continues to roll letting out line.
	I didn't see any stray spring or anything when I opened it up, so
	I'm wondering how this clutch engages. It's possible it catches
	with *gravity* (ie it can fall into place) but it doesn't seem
	right to me.

	thanks
