This is my largest smallie to date. After a long, and very unproductive
day following a serious coldfront, I switched over to topwater just for
the helluv it. Needless to say, I used my favorite CRAZY CRAWLER over
a rock pile adjacent to deep (35'+) water. This cow came up and quietly
sucked the plug under with less commotion than a 1/2 lb sunfish!
Fight was on...she could barely clear water she was so heavy.
She's back there to get bigger.

| Chalk another one up for Holeshot Joe and the Crazy Crawler. Way to go
Joe. Gitzit was just in my office yesterday telling me a fish story
about top water plugs and the success he was having with them. I told
him to use a Crazy Crawler, they used to work real good for me. I
agree with you that they are the best top water lure I've ever used.
Only problem is I haven't used a top water lure in a long time, I just
don't have the patience to sit there and work them. Unbelievable that
a Smallie that big hit it so softly.

Madd Matt

| I picked up a smallie the same size earlier this year on a 1/4 oz.
Rebel "Pop-R" and could bairly feel the strike. I just waited until I
felt the fish and all hell broke loose ! This fish didn't jump either.
A friend of mine was walking the brook/wetlands area before they
dammed it up to form a pond, and said he saw four HUGE smallies - one
of which looked like a State Record. Who knows, but they're in there, I
guess. I had 2 fish last weekend pop 6lb line like a gunshot on
spinnerbaits, but they could have been largemouths. I did catch a 5+
from the same area.

I was using a crankbait, something called a "Deep Hog" that is made
expressly for K-mart and cost me all of a $1.99. Tackle included an
Ambassador Garcia 5500C (found at the bottom of a lake whilst I was
snorkeling 2 years ago) with 12lb. test and a borrowed bassin' stick
(thanks Al!). Oh yeah, blues skies, about 75 degrees, no wind. Water
was about 60 degrees surface temp.
I'm not an expert on fish, but I believe it's spawning time for these
guys. He had beautiful color and was spraying milky white fluid all over
the boat.

I took my daughter fishin' yesterday. I set up about 5:20, and caught a
little one right away. My daughter was thrilled. I tossed it back, rerigged,
and set off after her (she was headin' to the rocks.) I got about 50 feet,
and saw line screaming off my reel. A short but spirited fight, and I had
the fish on the sand. She deformed the hook (a mustad 3x strong.) Nice
fish- my first keeper.
It took less than 5 minutes for the beach network to get other anglers down. :-)
I caught more, and my daughter made me leave while the fish were still biting!

Length: 49"
Place: 4-5 miles out of the Mouth of the Merrimack
Date: july 10, 1992 12:00 noon
Bait: pink floating broken-back rebel
We were trolling for blues (had already caught 3) and the line on my new cheap
($12) rod starting screaming out (thought it was a big blue). I couldn't move
the fish for about 4-5 minutes. Then I started gaining line a little at a time.
I started to think twice about it being a bluefish, but a striper way out here
in bright sunshine (nah).
I didn't have a reel for this rod so I had put on the (gift) reel (an old
Lawrence) from one of my extra "guest" deep sea rods. It had 50 lb Andre on
it. After 10 minutes the reel started jambing up and by the end couldn't
turn the handle, we handlined the last 30 yds. Don't know who was more pooped,
the fish or me.
The lure was fished off a small planner (on the line) and I really don't know
how deep it was. The first time I used the device (but definitely not the
last).
This was my first keeper and I released it after measurements and pictures.

Species: Salmon River Native Steelhead
Weight: 13.5 lbs.
Length: 32"
Date: Feb. 5, 10:00 am
Place: Between Snagging Pool and Pineville Bridge, Salmon River, N.Y.
Bait: Orange Egg Sac
Line: 8 lb. test line, 6 lb. test leader
Rod: Tom Coots' 8.5 ft. Steelhead Rod (?)
Reel: Shimano FX200, Quick-release trigger
Method: Cast upstream, drift down along bottom w/ slinky wt., #6 hook
Time: 20 fun-filled minutes to land (Wading in river)
This was my first Steelhead trip, so I was extremely excited to be
able to land one of these monsters on such light lb. test. This big
male made about 5 runs, the longest being about 75 yds. Every time he
saw me or the net, he would find renewed energy and start ripping off
line again. The scariest part was when he ran away from the net and
towards me at which time my line decided to tangle into a rat's nest
only to surprise the hell out of me when it all untangled on his next
run! I really learned the meaning of the word "finesse" on this day
because it takes an incredible amount of it to work a 13.5 lb. fish out
of current on 6 lb. leader. A special thanks to Tom Coots, Jack
Haggerty (Boomer), and Jack Varley (The Skoal Bandit), without whose
infinite knowledge and guidance this would not have been possible.
These guys really showed this rookie the ropes and now I'm hooked;
can't wait to go again. I didn't even mind the sub-zero weather,
ice on the line, the tackle, my eyelets, and face, the icebergs
coming downstream, and re-tying a hundred times. This was the fish
and fight of a lifetime!! When he finally came in, Coots pointed out
that he had sperm on his flanks from the exertion, and I told him
that may have been me, I got a little excited out there.

How: Trolling. Caught him on the turn just as the lure
started to pick back up.
Actually, the fish was caught by a friend of my son. We were all at
our cabin over the Memorial Day weekend. However, it was a nice fish
(certainly the biggest I've seen out of this lake) and thought it
deserved a mention here. I was driving and we *ALL* participated in
getting this fish in the boat because we had neglected to take a net
with us!

39.58 | HAWG on BRAIDED LINE | ECADSR::BIRO | | Tue Sep 07 1993 09:04 | 75 |
| ================================================================================
Specie : Smallmouth Bass
Weight : 3 lbs 15 oz
Length : 20-21 " apx
Date : 14 Sep 1993
Place : Northwood Lake
Lure : worm
line : new braided line dia of 12 lb test but 60 lb test
Rod : Berkley Lighten rod
Reel : G. Loomis
Time of Day : 11 PM
Conditions : Dark, no moon out yet
Depth : Shallow, near shore about 18 inch of water
This is the first time I got to try the new braided line on a large bass.
It was great yet strange. First I have been having trouble with the line,
it only works good with heavy lures as the line reels out faster then a small
lure and ends up tying knots in it. I normally have to add a small weight
to the end of the line to cast it. It is white, highly visible to bass. I had
to take a green magic marker and color the first 3 ft of the line, but that is
hard to do as the line does not absorbed it very well. After all said and done,
it is still a great line but has it limits. Next comes the hook set, all
sorts of warning labels comes with the line..
DO NOT DO A HARD HOOK SET OR YOU WILL SHATTER YOUR GRAPHITE ROD !!!
The reason for this is the line only has about 2 to 3 percent stretch as
compared to normal line of 20 to 30 percent stretch. You are always in
contact with your lure, I could feel the bass pick up the worm, I waited then
just jerked the rod about 1 inch to do the hook set. Nah I said that could not
have hook the fish so I jerked the rod again about 1 inch. The Fight was on
.. in pure darkness there was no moon to help... for about 5 min I fought ..
about 3 min of the 5 the fish was airborne, but all of the time I was in solid
control like I have never been before, not once did the line go slack. I did
not understand how much the stretching of normal lines gave the fish a big
advantage. The only shock absorbsion now was the rod, not the line. I went
to land the fish, ok it was dark and I was not sure what I had caught so I
did not want to lip the fish. I tried to pull it up with the rod... I did
not think the rod would hold the fish, so here comes what should have been
warning # 2...
DONT PULL A FISH IN USING THE LINE... IT WILL CUT THREW YOUR HAND LIKE BUTTER
Yup, I needed gloves to pull this puppy in, but I wrapped the line around my had
several times an pulled the fish in. Now this was not that big of a fish (in
weight) but was a good length, it had a small belly so was underweight but still
gave a great fight. I just wanted to post a note about my experience with the
new braided line. It is great, has it limits and it will stay on one of my rods
at all times now.
SUMMARY of LINE:
NO STRETCH
MUST USE HEAVY LURES or Weight the line
IT IS HIGHLY VISIBLE... COLOR it...
I used a magic marker make it spotted green for the first 3 feet.
I was using it in my bait casting reel, but others have used it
in a spinner reel ( the 30 lb test version )
It is expensive about $10 for 100 yards.
( I said spotted green as it is hard to get it to be a solid color, but
the spotted green seem to work ok)
john
opps almost forgot to mention about the hook set with the braided line..
I went to take the hook out of the fish, I was using a ture-turn
2/0 hook. I had hooked it on its upper lip, the hook set was so
deep that I could only see the shaft of the hook, the hook and the
rounded section was buried deep in the jaw of the fish. I tried to
remove the hook, even with pliers I could not remove the hook.
Since there is no stretch you don't have to do the power hook set
with this new line, if you do I guess if you rod did not shatter
you would either pull the jaw out of the fish's head or you would
straighten out your hook.
enjoy john

You know I really don't know. But, it wasn't too bad because of the

have landed him without a boat. The water is awfully fast in that
area.

| I've seen some of the artificial mounts. They look nice, but you
definitley feel like what your seeing isn't real, and never was.
My uncle had a sailfish done, and a friends father had a king salmon.
I think they were done from fiberglass, but it almost seemed that it
was some kind of plastic. In my opinion they were OK, but not worth
a quarter of the money they cost, and I wouldn't want it on my wall...
I'm sure other people might feel completely fine with one, which is
great as releasing the fish would be neat (although most NH lakes have
been overstocked to the point the forage base has been destroyed).
As a side note, a friend of mine called fish and game to see if they
maintain any records for NH lakes. They do, and the largest fish
registered for Sunapee was 11lbs, in 1954. They are sending him the
forms for registration. I've read of bigger fish being taken over the
years, but I guess none were registered...The state record was closer
to 40lbs!

That's the largest Sunapee trout, not lake trout. The state record laker
is 28 lbs 8 oz, caught in 1958 at Newfound. I'd be more than a little surprised
if no one had ever registered a lake trout from Sunapee that was over 20 lbs.

39.80 | Sunapee Golden Trout? | HDECAD::WOOD | | Tue Jun 07 1994 11:10 | 4 |
| I was really surprised too. Do you mean the Sunapee Golden Trout, which
is now extinct? I thought they were gone before 1954, but I bet your
right. I called my friend last night, and he's going to get back with
fish and game today to find out what the story is...
|
39.81 | | WAHOO::LEVESQUE | light, held together by water | Tue Jun 07 1994 14:55 | 5 |
| The Sunapee trout is, I believe, a subspecies of the golden trout.
The golden trout is not extinct; some are still alive and well out west.
In fact, it is believed that NH still has a tiny population of golden
trout according to state fisheries biologist Steve Perry. No confirmed
catches lately, though.
|
39.82 | Where? | HDECAD::WOOD | | Tue Jun 07 1994 15:35 | 21 |
| According to "American Food and Game Fishes" the Golden Trout your
referring to in the west are originally from the Kern River region
of California and is a subspecies of the rainbow trout, Salmo gilberti.
The Sunapee trout, salvelinus aureolus or golden trout of Sunapee
wasn't discovered until 1888. It was only native to Sunapee Lake
New Hampshire and Flood Pond, Ellsworth Maine.
The real interesting thing is the book states that around the turn of
the century "through fish cultural operations the Sunapee trout was
introduced into a number of other lakes."
I've read elsewhere that the reason the Sunapee trout became
extinct (contradictory to what Steve Perry claims) is that it
intermixed with Lake trout after their introduction. I forget if
either the offspring can't reproduce, or if it was something more
like the male lake trout are more agressive then the male Sunapee
trout and in a few generations breed the Sunapee traits out of the
gene pool...Based on all this, I find it exciting that the state
biologist thinks they still live somewhere in NH, would be very
interested to find out where, and wonder why they aren't on the States
endangered species list. It would be interesting to chat with Mr Perry.

I heard the same story. But it is believed that a small population may
well still exist (not in Sunapee, but in one or two other places in NH
and, I believe, one in Maine.) I misplaced the notes I took during my phone
call with Steve Perry a year or two ago, but I probably posted most of them
either in this conference or in flyfish.

| Actually it was in note 140 of this conference, "Stocking fish". John
was told from the Maine officials they were really stocking Silver
Char. The feeling was that the Silver Char were the same as Sunapee
trout, with minor differences. Seeing as this whole science seems
pretty in-exact I still don't know what's really true. The only thing
that would convince me would be a DNA study, if possible, using skin
or flesh samples from a Sunapee trout mount verified as being caught
in the lake itself...
