35.0. "Public Ramps for N.E. Salt Water" by FURTHR::HANNAN (Beyond description...) Thu Aug 08 1991 11:58

I am in search of public ramps to launch my '58 Thompson into
the salt in the New England area.

The only one I definitely know about is the public ramp in
Dorchester, MA near UMass and the gas tanks. I've heard there's
also one in Scituate, and I think I remember seeing one in the
	Salisbury/Newburyport area.

Does anyone have any details on the above or other salt-water ramps
in New England ? Location ? Condition ? Fees ? Recommendations
like "don't try to launch unless it's high tide" (is this the general
rule anyway) ? Etc ? Is there an agency that might have a listing ?

I'm basically looking for a list of public ramps anywhere on the
southern NH, MA, or RI shoreline.

	Thanks,
	Ken (rookie boater)

I know of the one in Scituate you are talking about, as I used to live
1/2 mile from it. It is a good ramp and is not limited to any tide
restrictions. I have been in and out of water there with a 25' boat
at various tides and have not had a problem. It does get filled up
    early on a nice day.

DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of route 123 and route 3A. Follow
signs into Scituate harbor. Go completly through the center of town
until you come to a set of lights. ( the harbor will be on your
right) Take a right at the lights and in 1/4 mile you will see a
restaurant called pier 44. The ramp is next to it.

Another ramp I used to use is in Weymouth off of RT 3A. This is not
the best of ramps as you put in as what as known as the back river.
Depending on the tide you could bottom out if you don't read your
chart well. At least when I went out last a couple of years ago the
channel out of the dock was an immediate left up the river. Once your
out of the ramp the channel is marked well. But for those who went out
straight then hooked left, they would almost cetainly bottom out during
low tide. The ramp can be accessed at low tide however, If your
vehicle does not have good traction, the green slime which builds up
    on the ramp is brutal.

DIRECTIONS: Take route 3A south and about 1 mile after the Fore River
bridge you will see a set of lights with a Mister Donuts on your right.
    Take a right here.
Continue on this road 1-1.5 m and when you hit a beach on your left
take a right into a parking lot and continue until you see water, then
    you will see the ramp.

    hope this helps
    good luck Joe

Popes Landing in Danvers is a good ramp. Exit 23s off 128.
There is a ramp behind the Gloucester high school on the Anisquam
    river.
There is a ramp in winthrop harbor off shirly st.

There is one at haptom and at rye NH.

If you use the Pope's Landing launch in Danvers
during low tide, use caution when walking on the ramp
or even pulling your vehicle back up the ramp. It get's
pretty slick... Best at high tide.

I think they charge $4 for parking now also.
35.5In Newburyport areaPENUTS::GORDONMon Aug 12 1991 13:5717
There is one on the Salisbury reservation in the merrimack river. I
have never used it but I see people using it at all stages of the tide.
I towed someone in here a low tide and it's about 6ft deep but gets
shallow past the ramp. also the channel is narrow.

Aonther in Newburyport is at Cashman park on merrimack st. I have used
it but at low tide it's tricky and also there is a pretty good current
running by here. I believe it is $5 to the town.

The best one that I have used is at 3R marina. It is good at all tides
and has docks to tie up while waiting. I believe it's $8 per day and
    they also have season rates.

    Hope this helps.

RE: .-1 I'm pretty sure that Cashman's landing is free. At least it
was in June. There is a $5 fee to get into Salisbury state park to
launch the boat, but the ramp is real good and it's into a small
bay to the side of the river, so current isn't nearly as much of a
problem as at Cashmans. You can get get out of Salisbury reservation
anytime, but you can only get in at their normal hours. I'm not
sure when it opens in the morning, but believe it closes at 8:00 p.m.

35.7Salsbury - best deal for the $ROYALT::GAFFNEYGone fishin/racinTue Aug 13 1991 08:2712
We launch a Salsbury State park all the time. The best deal is to
get a season pass for $30, then you can come and go at any time.
The launch itself is pretty good, you can launch at all tides with
no problem. The drawbacks are no lights at night and no real place
to tie your boat up. You can beach your boat to the side of the
ramp, but watch out for rocks lying on the sand (they are hard to
see at high tide). Make sure you know your fish limits, the
Environmental Police hand out there quite a bit, checking fish
    boxes and coolers.

For NH freshwater lakes and rivers, Clark's Fishing Guide, accompanied
with a Delorme NH Atlas is the way to go. Clark's can be found often
at NH bookstores. It's always available at Northern Bass Supply in
    brentwood NH (mail order 1-800-227-7032).

35.10New boat ramp?RECV::STORMTue May 10 1994 16:448
The Surfland fish report in last week's edition of The Fisherman said
"the state-of-the-art boat launching ramp behind the Towle Siverware
Plant is ready to go!". Does anyone know where that ramp is located?
Is it on the Merrimack, or is it on the Parker River?

    Thanks,
    Mark

35.11It's right where you want itWRKSYS::SAMARASNew England: July-August & winterTue May 10 1994 18:1810
YES. The new boat ramp is right on the Merrimac on the Newburyport side of the
river. It's about 1 mile (or less) north of the Rt 1 bridge (the big green one).

The best way to get there is to follow Rt 1 to Newburyport. Get off at the
bridge and head north along the river. You'll see it on the right. It's next to
the old brick Towle silversmith factory (now closed).

I haven't checked it out, but they've been working on this for quite a while.

Thanks. Is this Cashman's? I was thrown off by the Towle reference.

Actually, I was hoping it was on the Parker River. I'd like to
fish that area, but public access seems to be sorely lacking.

The new ramp in in Cashman park in Newburyport on the Merimack. I haven't seen
it yet so cannot comment.

There is a ramp at the town landing in Rowley. Access to the Rowley river
which empties into the Parker river behind Plum Island. There is a fee
but I don't know what it is. There is some great striper fishing in the
estuary behind the island. The Rowley river is fairly shallow at low tide
3-4 feet but is well marked. I've seen some 25'+ boats come out of there.

Yea, we tried that one once. Actually, we used a marina ramp right
next to the town. I thought the town ramp was for residents only.

The problem we had was the late night return trip following the
twisty channel at low tide in the dark. A higher tide or light and
    it would have been fine.

I know there is a nice ramp on the Parker River right at the bridge
(rt 1 I think). Unfortunately, it's only for town residents.

I drove past the state ramp at Westport Point late last year, and noticed
a new sign. Apparently the ramp is still free, but the town of Westport
wants about $9 a day to park in "their" lot. Some fine print there about
going to the town hall for something or other.

I guess I'll have to check it out before I haul my 24 footer down there
and find out that there's no place to park the trailer.

35.17Gloucester/Rockport area ramps ?USCTR1::GOLFN::PeterNeilFri Jun 09 1995 14:3819
Hi,

I currently keep my boat (22ft Chris Craft) on the trailer in a marina on the
Merrimack in Newburport. I'd like to get the boat down to Gloucester/Rockport
occasionally for some fishing and diving and I'm looking for pointers to any
nice ramps within a short ride to the open ocean.

I've been told that there is a nice State/Public ramp on the Annisquam river near the
Gloucester High School. Could anyone fill me in on this ramp and give me an idea
what it's like taking the Annisquam either direction (North to Rockport and South
to Gloucester Harbor) ? Time, markings, etc ?

Are there any other ramps that could take my size boat and that also has parking
this general area ?

Thanks for any help,

Peter.

The Annisquam, on a weekend, with nice weather, shall we say has high blood
pressure. Lots and lots of yahoos running around way to fast and with no
consideration for others. It gets skinny in some places and shallow except for
the channel at low tide. Be careful.
