25.0. "Tackle Bargains" by MLTVAX::LUCIA (Here, fishy, fishy...) Thu Aug 01 1991 11:12

I for one enjoyed hearing about tackle bargains. Let's use this note
for that ever-so-important topic.

Walt Gibson (remember him?) called and asked me to see if there was any
interest in 12" moldcraft squid. He is apparently ordering a whole
bunch direct from moldcraft for like $5/each. Call him @ home if you
are interested at (508) 957-5865.

25.1not at Zyla'sROBOAT::HEBERTCaptain BlighThu Aug 01 1991 15:4619
I found myself in Zyla's last night, staring at "the wall." I stopped
staring long enough to wipe the drool and buy a deep-diving Rapala that I
just *had* to have, as I *know* it will be a killer and my new secret
weapon. Then we drove up to Hooksett (NH) to look over the new WalMart.
<argggg> That very same lure was there on the pegboard. I paid $4.75 at
Zyla's, and it's $4.28 at WalMart. Other lures are similarly priced.
Zyla's used to be the very cheapest place to get lures around here,
barring closeout sales.

WalMart had a modest selection of Rapala, Rebel, Bomber, and some Heddon
plugs (torpedos, zaras, etc.), in addition to the standard spinners,
spoons, flies, etc. When the WalMart opens in Amherst, NH next year, there
won't be much reason at all to go to Zyla's, except for their variety of
lures.

Zyla's is no longer the cheapest place to get stuff. Actually, the wife
and I noticed some time ago that their prices had climbed on everything.

I'm a newcomer to this file, so I must have missed Zyla's somehow. I've
seen a couple of references to it, but have no idea where it is. I
usually get my stuff at Spag's. Sometimes, Sears has good prices on
certain items. I've found a few really good buys there. They were
probably mistakes, but that's okay with me. Like the Shimano reel I
bought; it's a TXn00. It's the biggest TX they made at that time. I
paid $29.95 at Sears. Can someone tell me where this Zyla's is? In case
they have better prices than Spag's? I live in Acton, MA, BTW, so NH is
not out of the question, at all. I work in SHR, which is close to
Spag's.

Zyla's is easy to get to. Take rt 3N into New Hampshire. Take exit 11
(Continental Boulevard) in Merrimack (this is a 50 toll). Left at the end of
the exit. Left at the first set of lights (this is old route 3, aka DW Highway).
Zyla's is up on the left, about 5 miles or so.

There was a bin next to the sports-dept cash register at the
Sears in Auburn, MA with assorted crankbaits 2 for $5.00.
I picked up a couple of Rebels, but mostly they had Hedon (?)
and Bombers and stuff like that. Pretty good price, not sure of

Actually, Walt is no longer (see .0) considering the squid, as The
Fishermans' Outfitter in Danvers has the same squid for $3 (This may be
a special, better call to make sure)

Well, when I get it, in 7-9 working days, I'll let you know. Not
having seen it, I can't say much. But it sounds like a nice rod.

For those who haven't seen it, it's the original Boron BHV rod that
has not been available for awhile. They are available for a limited time
while quantities last.

They have both casting and spinning rods available.

Another tempting deal was the ABU Black Max baitcasters for $35,
normally $55. But currently having 6 or 7 baitcasters in fine shape
I wasn't able to justify another one...

But since I was down to a just a couple quality normal size spinning
outfits, I had no problem ordring the spinning rod. If I like it,
I'll probably order another one, if they are still available.

Geez, that's means I'd need another reel too... 8^)

Wilderness has become a Tracker and Nitro dealer and in the process
have become an official "Bass Pro Shop" as well. However they have not
started carrying any tackle yet (other than the very few odds and ends
that they have had from time to time). They are considering getting into
the tackle buisness but have not yet made the committment. They are
concerned that by the time they get setup they'd miss alot of the spring
buying season, so they may hold off until next year.

They'll special order stuff for folks (but you'd probably be better off
ordering it yourself).

25.26Where to buy a Newell Reel?NEMAIL::GREENBERGTue Sep 01 1992 13:1716
Does anyone know where I can buy a Newell reel in the Greater Boston
area? They are incredibly smooth, very fast (5:1 ratios) and very very
light (about half to a third lighter than Penn or Shimano).

I know Spag's used to carry a few, but I think they dropped the line.
A place called Angler's Workshop in Woodland, Washington sells them
mail order, but I'd like to see it before I buy it.

Does anyone know what the Newell equivalent is of the Penn 113H?

It's time to go to lighter cod jigging equipment.

I found them in the Offshore Angler's catalog. My guess is that you want
model 447-5 (300yds 50#) @ 20.2oz for $127.00. This looks to be the closest
you'll come to the 113h, which is the defacto standard in codfishing reels.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at a model G440 (probably not the
actual Newell model no.) in the Angler's Workshop catalog. It holds
400 yards of 40#, weighs 18.3 oz, and costs $127. I tend to fish
lighter line, but it sounds like either one will do.

Light line for codfish? What's the point?
25.31Why Lighter LineNEMAIL::GREENBERGFri Sep 04 1992 16:3628
I've been using a 7' graphite composite rod and a Daiwa 50H spooled
with 30lb for jigging. It seems to work well. I use a lighter jig
and I don't kill myself bringing up small cod (that's all there seems to be
lately). When I'm on the party boats, I haul out the heavy artillery:
the 8 ft jigging rod with the Penn 113H spooled with 50lb Dacron. Then
I have to use the 14-17 oz jig and kill myself for a half dozen 5lb
cod.

The lighter line has less drag in the water and the combination of the
less drag and lighter jig and lighter gear seems to be just as
effective at all depths. I have always been skeptical about using light
line because of the high stretch factor of monofilament line, but it
really works and I like using the 9 oz jig. I've been able to hold
bottom surprisingly well in most currents. I also like the lighter line
when the fish aren't taking the jig and I have to switch to bait.

What I want the graphite rod/Newell combo for is to replace the heavy
stuff I use on the party boats. I'd like to try to get away with 30lb
line, but I doubt I could do that on the party boats. I suspect I'd
have to use 40, but I'd like to avoid the 50 lb stuff. The other thing
about the Newell I like is it's 5:1 gearing. Sure gets you to the top
faster.

It's tough when you get old -- you look for shortcuts to preserve your
body.

25.32go to lower diameter lineLEVERS::SWEETTue Sep 08 1992 11:308
Before you start switching line weights check out the line
diameters. You may be able to fish 50lb jinkia at a smaller
diameter than something like trilene big game at 30. (yes it
costs more). Mono has less drag than dacron also. Mono will
work just fine up to 180-200ft after that the line stretch
is really noticable and going to dacron will improve sensitivity.

Bruce
25.33Jinkia sounds like a great ideaNEMAIL::GREENBERGTue Sep 08 1992 13:3113
Thanks for the tip. I was wondering which lines have the smallest
diameter and you just answered that question. I've seen the Jinkia
listed in some of the mail order catalogs. I think that might be the
best solution . . . Does the 50lb thin line stretch as much as the 50lb
standard diameter stuff? Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of
any studies done on line stretch and give results and brand names? I
know my father used to use Stren while I used Trilene and I outfished
him for years. My theory is that the Stren is like chewing gum. Anybody
have any comments?

Thanks for all the input.

Art
25.3411SRUS::LUCIATUNA!Tue Sep 08 1992 17:1214
My opinion:

stren is good for hanging pictures, not trophies. I personally use 50# Ande
tournament green for cod. It is on the lower of the diameters. (it is IGFA
class line, however, which means it breaks at <50#) Jinkai (note the correct
spelling) will cost you. I've only seen leader spools in the mail order
catalogs, so you'll probably have to pay top $ at a tackle store to get it.

I use an 8' sweet stick (broom handle action) and a 113h w/ the 50# ande. It
can get tedious using heavy jigs in deep water, but I have also pulled up
all kinds of ghost gear with the terminal tackle intact. I don't think I
would be as lucky with 30#.

Tim
25.35Line PricesNEMAIL::GREENBERGWed Sep 09 1992 10:1341
You guys weren't kidding about the price of the Jinkai, but I did a little
research and found that it's less expensive than Dacron and if it has less
drag in deep water and has reasonably low stretch, it sounds like an
excellent alternative.

There's a mail order place called Charlie's Tackle in Dartmouth that

Rich,
You were right. My wife forgot that I wanted to be at the

whom I was "Dad" sitting for weekend.

I made it there by 1:00pm and some of the dealer rep's were still
not set up. But I did get to talk to the PENN dealer and got
what I went for. A PENN 704Z $44.99 and a Penn Slammer 7' Light Weight
spinning rod $39.99. I wanted a 7' Med action rod but they only made
them in 6'6" so he convinced me that for what I was fishing for
(Stripers, Blues etc) that the Light would be fine although he
said the 704Z was a big real for the rod. I said my "ole" green
70's PENN 704 has done excellant and I wanted my wife to have the
same quality. This was her Valentine's Day gift. ;-)

I also picked up a few of the $1.99 lures although they didn't have
many good colors to select from. I also bought a tackle box for $20
that will hold all my big/mdeium/small lures. Great Bargain for
the size box.

That PENN 704Z Black/Gold on the all white w Black/gold trip Slammer
Rod looks awesome.

Cross Posted in Boats Note File.

Its been 18 months since I last went fishing and I did not get to register my
boat or buy a license last year.

"""""""""
I took yesterday (6-Jul) off to get my boat/trailer registered and go fishing.
City hall in Nashua was exceptional, at 8:30 there was no one in line and I
got a very helpfull lady who took my old trailer registration and produced a
new registration and plate for the modest sum of $9.00 to Nashua, and $4.50 to
the State of NH. I was out by 8:35.

Now to do the boat: I drove to Pete's Gun & Tackle in Hudson and its closed on
Tuesday's. I know I should have called first. So I went home and tried to call
another marina - no answer, so fearing a drive to Dept of MV in Concord, I
called them, Yet another helpful local government worker, she gave me the name
and phone number of Briand Marine in Nashua.

For all of you in Nashua and especially Spit Brook Road, Briand Marine is
run by a couple out of their basement. They sell a good selection of fishing,
shooting and hunting equipment and supplies. They also do NH boat registrtions
and fishing/hunting licenses. (I did not check prices on their products).

The store was run by a very helpful and talkative lady (Rita Briand).

1993 Boat registation of a <12' boat with 3hp electric motor is $20.00. Prices
go up from there.

I did get to fish - but that is for the fishing notes file.

I got skunked, but it did feel good to be fishing again.

25.41Bert's going out of buisness saleRANGER::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerTue Sep 14 1993 13:417
Bert's in Pepperal Mass is going out of buisness and has everything for
30% off (which should bring the prices down to a reasonable level 8^).

I'd guess that prices may come down further as time goes buy.

His Minn-Kota repair buisness will be moving up to his place on Lake
Wentworth, Wolfeboro NH.
25.42$.80 lures at Wal-MartFOUNDR::DODIERSingle Income, Clan'o KidsMon Apr 03 1995 17:5014
Went to the Wal-Mart in Nashua at lunch and they were puling some
lures off the wall and marking them down to $.80. A couple of the lures
were small (i.e. good smallmouth sized) shad-rap type Rapalas that were
marked $3.96 before they repriced them. They were the nuclear green
pattern. Not my favorite color, but they work.

I also picked up a couple of small Kastmasters and a couple medium
sized Mann's crank baits also for $.80 each. Was thinking of trying some
trout fishing at Massabesic this year so I picked up a couple bottles of
Powerbait paste in red and yellow for $2.74 a bottle. Last I looked, I
thought that stuff was closer to $4 a bottle.
