| I know this is the fishing notesfile, but American Hunter (NRA)
magazine had a good roll-up of Loran and GPS systems and evalution
in its latest issue. I think I remember them saying that GPS systems
were running around $3k. Also it mentioned there are still 'holes'
in the coverage at different timeframes, but new satellites are
constantly being launched to fill in these blackouts. Since I was
immediately turned of by the price of GPS I tended to pay more
attention to info on Loran. Had'nt even had my coffee yet when
reading the article so I remember very little :^). It is a very
good article to read before purchasing either system. So look for
a buddy that is a hunter and belongs to NRA and ask him if you can
borrow the magazine.

Well I put a interphase pilot loran on layaway yesterday, Iplan on
interfacing it with an interphase 20/20 dual. the place Iam geting it
from didnt want to talk price till I said I wanted to interface with
the 20/20 then the price dropped some along with the price of the 20/20
Now the big question is how does this neat little gadget just show
up on the boat??????????? I wil probably be in the doghouse for awhile
but I dont care I have been wanting a loran for quite some time and
now I got one.

Lee,
Glad I'm not the only one in the doghouse. I'm ordering the DC500/
pilot loran combo unit from Defender's in New Jersey for $530 +
shipping + the antenna. How'd you do on price? I've got to get it on
the boat by the 17th as we leave for Oak Orchard (out your way) on the
18th at about 4 AM.

| the guy gave me a $60.00 break on the unit, I want to get the down
probe before the new fish finder though, I figure I can stick with the
old fishfinder till the winter then get the new one.
How long are you gonna be out here fishing?, you will be here for
the first weekend of the ESLO derby so be prepared to see LOTS & LOTS
of boats!!!!
Should be a good derby, hopefully we will get a king placed this
year. I plan on being out every night I can weather & lake conditions
permitting...

23.5 | GPS = no TD's | BTOVT::BELL | Infinity gets tedious before its over | Sat Aug 10 1991 14:17 | 39 |

GPS delivers Lat/Lon and altitude information. The GPS's computer
compares the time that a reading was received from a satellite
against the time it was actually sent. When all the satellites
are in place, a GPS receiver is suppossed to be able to "see"
6 at any point on the globe, and will usually determine a fix
based upon the 3 best placed, and uses a forth for altitude.
(I'm not doing this from memory btw, I went back to an old
Southern Boating mag).
I remember reading an article that basically said
mariners are gonna have to re-learn to cruise using Lat/Lon
as the GPS receiver prices come down and loran takes a back
seat. The article recommended that people buying a GPS that have
extensive Loran TD points logged, run both units and over time
xfer the logging of GPS based Lat/Lon as you visit your TD logged
site.
GPS prices are coming down fairly fast though for someone that
just got a LORAN last year, I doubt we've got a GPS waiting
to be stuffed in the ol' Xmas stocking.
GPS receivers can offer updates in position and speed REAL fast,
it'll catch the fact that you stopped walking almost realtime.
BUT ... not all sets are the same. Has to do with if they
are a single or multi-channed receiver as to how many calculations
it can handle.
Most seem to take 2 minutes to make a cold 2D fix , 3 minutes for
a 3D fix with 2 second updates from there on. All from specs in
the catalogs ...
There are 3 in BOAT US's big catalog
Micrologic Explorer GPS $2250
Pronav GPS 100 $1795
Magellan Nav 1000 plus $2695

Hi You Chaps over the water,
A couple of us divers over here,in the UK have ordered an Eagle 9500
combined GPS/Sounder, the problem being that they are not shiping from
the States.
Is there a problem with them ??? are they available over there???
If so what is the cost etc, and is it possible to get them shipped directly.
Cheers
Graham.

I HAD A SITEK "EZ7" LORAN ON MY BOAT FOR A COUPLE OF
YEARS AND HAD GOOD LUCK WITH IT. I GAVE IT TO MY BROTHER IN LAW
LAST YEAR AND HE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH IT. HE DID HOWEVER HAVE A
SITUATION OCCUR ONCE IN A WHILE WHICH STUMPS ME.
I HAD ALWAYS HAD IT GROUNDED TO A "GROUND PLATE" IN MY
BOAT WHICH IS AN I/O. HE ON THE OTHER HAND HAS AN OUTBOARD AND
DOES NOT WANT TO USE ONE. HE GROUNDS IT TO THE CONTROLS.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT ALL OF A SUDDEN HE JUST LOOSES ALL
THE SETTINGS. AND HAS TO RE-PROGRAM IT LIKE IT WAS JUST OUT OF THE
BOX. HE BELIEVES IT IS DUE TO IMPROPER GROUNDING. I HAVEN'T A CLUE
WHAT HIS OPTIONS ARE.
HAS ANYONE COME ACROOS THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM ??????

23.8 | Replace the internal battery | BLUEFN::GORDON | | Mon Apr 05 1993 13:34 | 8 |
| I have the same loran and have had no problems with it. Two seasons ago I had
to reprogram it every time I turned it on. This was due to the intenal
lithium battery had worn out. I had the battery replaced $30-$40 and it's
working fine. I had it done in Gloucester at an electronics place specializing
in marine stuff. Don't remember the name, maybe someone here knows it or it
should be in the yellow pages

Any info would be appreciated.
Also if there is such a thing, how does the thing work and what would a
thing like that cost.
Thanks

23.13 | They have GPS handheld too... | HDECAD::WOOD | | Fri Jan 07 1994 13:15 | 4 |
| I've seen them advertised for less then 250.00. It has an antenae that
appears to be like an FM radio antenae if I'm not mistaken. I want to
say it was made by a comapany called Ray Jefferson, but am not positive
on that. I'll check some of my old catalogs for it...

| the Ray Jefferson PL99 Handheld Loran is on sale for $199.95
at Cabela's 1-800-237-444 I have no idea how good the unit is
most units are in the 300-500 dollar range and have a true
GPS antenna, so I would expect them to have better lock etc.

| The December E&B Catalog has a Waterproof Micrologic Super Sport
Hand-Held Loran for $249.99 List $395.00 with 250 Waypoints, Full Steering
functions, Easy to operate (RS20) etc.
They also had GPS units on "Sale" for $499.99 Magellan Meridian
or $599.99 GARMIN GPS 75.
I don't know the difference between a Loran or GPS but know none of them
come cheap and I'm not sure I'd want the cheapest anyway given why I
want one ;^)

23.21 | Eagle Combo | HDECAD::WOOD | | Tue Mar 22 1994 14:44 | 12 |
| Does anyone know if the GPS is based on line of sight with the
satelite? If I bought a hand held GPS with the built in antenae
would it work inside a closed in cockpit for instance? What about
inside a car, or in a building??? I'm just about ready to place an
order for the Eagle combination loran/fishfinder unit which also
has a plotter function (399.00) in the new Bass Pro catalog, but I
can't seem to stop eyeing the hand held eagle gps. It's only another
90.00, and I wouldn't have to get a loran ant. and mounting bracket
which makes the prices even closer. It would be great for hunting too,
although I'm due for a new fishfinder, and with a small boat the combo
unit seems great...decisions decisions :-) Does anyone have any
experience with either unit???

I have read in the Sailing conference that the Hand Held GPS's
do not work in the cabin very well on most sail boats. I know that
the instructions with my GPS unit said that to mount the roof ant.
away from all obstructions.

| GPS definitely relies on line of sight with the satellites. It'll work
OK through glass, but will NOT work, for example, underneath a forest
canopy.

23.26 | timeframe of LORAN phase out | RECV::STORM | | Wed Feb 01 1995 11:49 | 16 |
| Can anyone tell me what the current future of LORAN is? I know they
were originally planning to phase it out by 2002 or later. However,
I just got off the phone with a guy at Overton's. He said he 'heard'
that there was currently a bill in Congress that would do away with
LORAN by the end of this year. He didn't know if the source of that
info was accurate or not, but it sure seems possible.
I'm asking because I was about to buy a low price Loran. I have an
18' open boat that I fish bays and rivers with, so I don't feel I
can justify spending a lot of money on this. The cheapest LORAN is
now only $150, which would be great if I could depend on it for the
next 5 years or so. The cheapest GPS is still twice that much.
Thanks for any info,
Mark

| Has anyone used a KING 8008 loran,sonar,plotter combo.? I know the
company has folded but I have the chance to replace my KING 8002 unit
with one. My 8002 has served me since 1988 but now I have a cracked
cupler and the numbers will drift. A new cupler is about $120.00 -
$130.00 .
Thanks
