| Has anybody done any trout fishing lately? Seems to me it should be getting
good about now...

11.2 | Bow Lake report | MRKTNG::TOMAS | JOE TOMAS @TTB | Wed Oct 02 1991 14:18 | 11 |
| I was out on Bow Lake on Sunday trying for both smallies and trout.
Since the wind was howling (whitecaps!) and I had no luck with
smallies, I did some trolling. Surface temp was 61 degrees and all
trout, including baitfish, were marked from 35-45' down. I picked up
one 17" brown trout down about 40'. Water level was above normal as
it is with most lakes now.
There was also a club tournament going on (Tri-Valley...a MASS club?).
Not too much was caught but one guy picked up an 8lb 4oz largemouth.

11.3 | what's open after 15th? | SALEM::MOLLOY | | Mon Oct 07 1991 13:37 | 11 |
| Does anybody have a list or care to put a list together of ponds/lakes
which are open to trout fishing AFTER October 15 and DON'T get "drawn
down" in the fall. IMO this business of closing Trout Ponds after Oct
15 not to re-open till the 4th Saturday in April is DUMB. The argument
that this protects the spawning trout is inane, there are so few ponds
with natural reproduction that they could be covered by special
regulations. I don't believe that trout ponds should be open to ice
fishing though.

| FYY...
I fished Bow Lake (NH) again this past Sunday. All fish were *still* down
deep...30-50'. Lots of baitfish and marks on the LCR. My son picked up one
brown trout, down about 30'. it was loaded with alewives. other than that,
no hits other than a couple of yellow perch. We tried Rappalas, streamers,
spoons, wobblers and spinners...nadda!
Hopefully, with some cooler weather they will come up to the surface. Water
was still high (easy to launch) and water temp was 60 degrees.

| Oh yea, I went through the same situation last week at Newfound
Lake. I saw a a bunch of marks down around 35-40 feet. Tried all
different depths on the downrigger. And I also threw everything
you did at them.
The only fish we hooked into all day was at a depth of 10 feet!
Quite a nice Salmon it was. This beauty hit a small black/green
streamer which was trailing about 8" behind a silver/gold dod-
ger. Hit it on the up-sweep, came completely out of the water
twice and broke off the fly.
So, in October, concentrate on shallow water 25-30' in depth and
fish shallow.

11.10 | Wooly Bugger is the ticket this year in So. NH | LANDO::HOFFMAN | | Mon May 16 1994 14:22 | 24 |
| Been having a GREAT season so far, using the Wooly Bugger in the trout ponds !
I had tied a few during the winter, and figured I'd try em sometime. Then, my
nephew coaxed me into using them right after ice-out, on brookies, and were
they ever great! Usually I troll the Maynard Marvel size 10, and do pretty well.
But the #8 bugger was noticeably better. This weekend, I used them in a fly-only
pond, and hammered the rainbows and brookies, all day long, in the bright
subshine. 2 rainbows were 17", and awesomely colored. They had bright red gill
covers like a cutthroat, and wide red lateral stripes on silver. Also, some
of the brookies were real native (or holdovers), and fine eating. One of
the brookies was the most brilliantly colored I've ever caught, and I just had
to let him swim away. In total, we got 10 rainbows and 6 brookies (most of which
we released, others I'm digesting as I type!).
I tied the buggers in black, with a few strands of crystal flash on the marabou
tail. I troll with a min-kota on my canoe, at slow speed, working the rod to
make the streamer dart. I use sinking fly line and large split shot to get it
down. This year, NH law allows weight on the line or leader to be used in fly
fishing waters. I think this is the key, to reach fish on those bright sunny
days.
Try the bugger ! Remember to keep the leaders long (30ft), using the lightest
mono you can get away with (2-3 lbs).
