I'm crossposting the following entry from the rathole here for the
benefit of our readers who: A. ignore the rathole or B. ignore policy

I don't wear my mod hat too much these days but...

I'd like to remind folks that the recent notes about "stupid questions"
(which most of us regulars know are poking fun at one particular regular)
and notes flaming about other noters, are a tremendous dis-service to this
file.

Think about it. Say you discovered a new sport or hobby that your interested
in. You find a notesfile on the subject. You check it out and the
largest note there is "the rathole" where people are pissing and moaning about
other noters and complaining about so many stupid questions. Would you feel
welcome to ask all sorts of beginners questions?

Sure, those of us who have been reading this file for years know that these
notes are all in fun and directed towards people we know well and have had
fun bustin' with for years. But the newcomer hasn't got a clue about this.

As moderator of fishing for many years, quite a few times over the years,
here at work and even outside of work, people would recognise my name from
the fishing file and say hello. And too many times people would comment on
how they did not feel comfortable contributing in there.

So, as I've said many times over the years. We have to remember that this
is a public conference and not just a playground for the tight nit little
group of ball busters that we have within - myself included!

Since the old conference has been archived, there is not alot of real
information available here. Let's not intimidate the folks who join
us and would like a little help enjoying the sport we all love.

-donmac (who now remembers one of the reasons he gave up ownership of the
         file)
