1934.0. "To: field not always truncated." by PRSSOS::MENICACCI () Mon Mar 03 1997 04:40
Hi,
I need some advise about VMSmail.
First case :
----------
MAIL> send
To: menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
nicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
nicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
nicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
nicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
nicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
nicacci,menicacci,menicacci,menicacci,me
%MAIL-E-NOSUCHUSR, no such user ME
Do you want to send anyway (Y/N, default is N)?
The field to: is truncated, that's expected behaviour.
Second case :
-----------
The username is : [email protected]
MAIL> send
To: [email protected],[email protected],[email protected]
.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]
t.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]
vt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@sos6.
evt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@sos6
.evt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@sos
6.evt.dec.com,[email protected]
CC: ,[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]
t.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]
vt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@sos6.
evt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@sos6
.evt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@sos
6.evt.dec.com,[email protected],[email protected],MENICACCI@so
s6.evt.dec.com,[email protected]
Subj: m,[email protected],[email protected],
%MAIL-E-INVITMLEN, invalid item length
%UCX-E-SMTP_ABORT, SMTP session abort
The To: field is not truncated, the list is continued in CC: field and in Subj:
field.
I tested this after a customer call.
It's problem is :
A user with a PC, send a mail to an Unix system (Solaris). This Solaris system
then, sends the mail to an OpenVMS Alpha (using DNI 8.0.1, that's DECNET IV on
SUN). The distribution lists are extended
(500 * "[email protected]").
The customer expected that the To: field would be truncated but that's not the
case and what's more trying to read the message received results in :
> %MAIL-E-RECTOBIG, 20512 byte record too large for MAIL buffer
Is that expected behaviour ?
Thanks,
Maria.

How about using a distribution list instead?

You're in the wrong conference. (Yes, this is the OpenVMS MAIL notes
conference.) The question you are asking appears to be one related to
the Solaris gateway, or with the UCX SMTP subsystem.
