1370.0. "Retirement?" by STAR::MEZZANO (What's up, doc?) Fri May 30 1997 18:11

As you may already know, we are currently evaluating the possibility of
retiring POSIX for OpenVMS within a couple of years from now.
This is due to several business and strategic reasons that I'm not going
to explain here (if you think that you may need this information, please
let me know).

At the same time we are trying to understand the impact of this decision
on our installed base and to find out what are our customers' concerns
and requirements for migration to alternative solutions.

We would like to make a final decision within the end of June 1997,
therefore I'd like to receive feedback on this matter by mid June
(Sunday June 15) from anybody who is in contact with customers using
POSIX or from whoever can provide useful information.

Many thanks,

	Vittorio Mezzano

1370.1Here's a large customer who uses PosixEVMS::EVERHARTMon Jun 02 1997 13:2312
    Philips Medical Systems uses Posix.

    BTW, what will "retiring" Posix mean? Would the old kits continue
    to work? Would the code be donated to DECUS so someone who REALLY
    needed to keep it going might do so?

    There are a rather larger number of folks who use Posix as a way
    to edit with vi, read/write tar tapes, or otherwise perform some
    operations that the Posix utilities are "good enough" for, regardless
    of the underlying implementation details like container file system.
