1645.0. "BEC voltage?" by GAAS::FISHER (BXB2-2/G08 DTN 293-5695) Mon Dec 05 1994 16:44

I was checking out a new speed controller the other night and I found
it was supplying 6.85 volts to my receiver. My Futaba S-133 micro
servos didn't seem to like it but older larger servos worked OK.

I called the manufacture "Traxxas" and they said they regulate to between
6 and 7 volts to the rx. The tech said the receivers are spec'd for this
because they are designed to run on 4 cells which could be Alkaline cells
at 1.5 volts per.

I don't believe him and think 6.85 volts is way to high.
Anybody have an extra opinion?

A lot of people are running 5 cell nicad packs based on this very premise. I
just bought a 5 cell pack to try it out. It's supposed to give you quicker servo
response.

hmmm kay et al,

if you look at a freshly peak charged five cell pack, the initial voltage
can be around 8v. of course this drops down to the nominal 6v, but in the
beginning it's still 8v.
now, some manufacturers allow 5-cell operation, some don't.
some rx have a onboard regulation for the electronics (not the servo
connectors!), so voltage isn't an issue.
the main problem are the decoupling capacitors found in the servos. the servos
i looked at in the past, had cap's rated 6.3v. i do not know, how long they
can withstand the 8v.
think about the possibility that production can have changed, so the older
servos xyz do not support 5-cell op, while new ones do....

bottom line:
you must call the manufacturer and get specific information on every part.

hope this helps.

I did some more experiments last night.
Worked fine on another receiver. The receiver
that caused the S-133's to go crazy was an old
single conversion CIRRUS that I have been just using
for setup during construction. Apparently the
newer receivers must drop the voltage down a little
on their own where as this old one didn't.

Anyway - I'll be using this as is - thanks for the
feedback.
