1618.1 | 3w rc is great! | FRUST::HERMANN | Siempre Chvere | Thu Jul 28 1994 10:02 | 21 |
| hi dave,
*_*_ G R E A T _*_* ! ! ! !
although my first impression of www was that it has been designed to
sell more network bandwith, it is definitively the fastest search for
a keyword in a notesfile that i have seen so far.
this again shows once more how important it is to use the correct
keyword on replies. do individual replies in a note get the same keyword(s)
as the base note, if the author does not set them?
can we offer this 3w server to the guys in the usenet conference?
(don't know 'bout your disk restrictions...)
is there many work involved to have the 3w and notes conference synchronized?
or does it work automatically? or does the 3w use the keyword directories
you updated recently?
thanks for the great job!

| Well, I don't believe we can offer this WWW to the outside world, as
we are not supposed to allow notes entries to be propogated outside
of Digital without the authors consent.
I too think it would be neat too and if someone can cite cases where
it is OK, I am willing to change my mind..
cheers,
jeff

> although my first impression of www was that it has been designed to

I don't think you're very far off the mark. Although I do believe it
allows people who are not Unix experts to traverse the internet and
use such things as ftp, gopher, telnet, etc. without really knowing
how they work.
> it is definitively the fastest search for
> a keyword in a notesfile that i have seen so far.
That was the goal. The index tree and search engine are local, thats why
its so fast.
> can we offer this 3w server to the guys in the usenet conference?
> (don't know 'bout your disk restrictions...)
This is actually just running on my workstation, so the disk restriction
is just sort of related to how much I have available at the time. The
current disk consumption is mininal, because there's not that much there.
As far as making it available on the internet, thats impossible due to the
firewall at our gateway to the internet. You can get out, but no one
can get in. Nothing short of an act of god can change that.
> is there many work involved to have the 3w and notes conference synchronized?
> or does it work automatically?
No not really, I wrote a script to turn the keyword info from the notes
file into html documents, but that was about it. As far as being automated,
its not really at all, as I have to manually pull the keyword info out of
the notes file and then run the script on it.

Well it looks like a few folks are checking out the server, so I guess
it wasn't a complete waste of time. :)
Anybody regognize the following ip addresses as their own?
16.183.192.2
16.63.48.127
Just an FYI. You're running from a machine thats not running some type
of domain name service, as a result I can't resolve your addresses into
something like quarry.zk3.dec.com. I going to restrict access to addresses
that end in dec.com, so all unresolvable names will be denied access.
Forgive my paranoia, I'm just trying to CMA.
If you have any questions please send me mail.

16.63.48.127 is my Ultrix workstation (largix.cxo.dec.com). I
*thought* my hostname was for real. :-)
Funny thing is (as I recall) I got in and checked things out; it didn't
act particularly strange.

Actually I got some mail saying that most ip machines inside DEC are
maintained on a volunteer basis, and that I shouldn't expect to be able
to resolve all the addresses, so I left it open to all machines.

I was installing a new system, building kernels, etc... So it was down
for a fair part of last week, the weekend, and most of yesterday.
As I mentioned before, all this stuff runs on my workstation, so it
may not always be available. I'll see if I can get it running today.

| Don't recall if this has been posted yet, but Tower has just announced
their own WWW page. So now they can ignore you on the Internet!
*************************************************************************
I'd like to formally announce the debut of the Tower Hobbies World Wide
Web Homepage. While still 'under construction', I thought I'd go ahead and
give out the address and ask for comments. The URL is:
http://www.prairienet.org/business/tower/tower.html
I think this makes Tower the first major R/C company with a Web page! Give
it a whirl and feel free to e-mail any comments or suggestions for
improvements you might have. I'll be adding a great deal of new features
and info to it in the next few months so check in often!

1618.20 | The firewall is stopping you? | CSC32::HAGERTY | Veni, Vedi, $Cmkrnli, Rebooti | Fri Dec 09 1994 11:19 | 3 |
| Probably because you're on a machine inside DEC. I can only get to it
from one of our machines that is on the internet ( on the other side
of the firewall in Palo Alto).
|
1618.21 | Try again later | NETCAD::WALTER | | Fri Dec 09 1994 12:41 | 7 |

but now I can't. The problem might be with Gatekeeper.
Don't worry about it, you're not missing much.

| I created a homepage for RA Cores last night. In checking it this morning, I
find a few of the links only worked last night due to me being IN the directory.
I'll fix them tonight from home. I thought I remembered a picture of a Gremlin
being posted in here somewhere but I haven't found it. If the owner/poster is
willing, I'll move it over and link it in. I'm in need of photos and haven't had
time to scan any in yet.
one interesting feature is the Gremlin Combat contest calendar which is all
linked together. If you click on the date, you either get the contest
announcement or the report. If you click on the location, you'll get directions
to the field. Let me know what you think. It'll be changing pretty rapidly for
the next week while I get things worked out.
The main pointer is:
http://world.std.com/~racores
The calendar (which is one of the broken links from the main page, today) can be
directly accessed by:
http://world.std.com/~racores/gremlin_contests#NextContest
Which will place you at the next scheduled contest in the list. Scroll up for
reports from previous contests and click for annoucements/directions. The
newsletters are archived there and I'll probably put the articles I wrote for
RCSD on there as well. Should be much improved by monday. (I know it's been a
lot of late nights so far)

1618.25 | http://world.std.com/~racores/index.html | RANGER::REITH | | Thu Mar 30 1995 11:18 | 11 |
| My homepage URL in .23 is wrong. You need the final slash in it for the relative
addressing in the client to work. Thanks to Wayne for pointing this out and
helping me figure out why the links weren't working.
URL is http://world.std.com/~racores/
or the full one is http://world.std.com/~racores/index.html
The client seems to trim back to the last slash before appending on the relative
addressing.
