1503.0. "PCM vs PPM for Gliders" by RANGER::PITONIAK () Mon Mar 29 1993 09:09

    PCM vs PPM for Gliders?

JR has just released a micro PCM reciever. Its dimensions are
    .55 x 2.06 x 1.43. The price is a little high ($200 PCM, $150 PPM)
but i was wondering if the additional resolution of PCM was worth
having for when; if ever; my skills catch up to it.

The size is very close to the micro RCD, and it is half as wide.
    Additional it has 6 channels.

Any comments on the benefits of either?

    thanks

Lots of questions but....... SPRINGS COMING!

PCM gives you a lot of things - but additional resolution is not one of them.
PPM has by definition infinite resolution (it's analog not digital) and PCM is
limited by the digital encoding to usually 9 or 10 (1024) bit resolution.

Given the choice I would choose PCM if I could afford it.

The six channel feature would be nice for me. I have had
difficulty programming the 5 channel RCD receivers with
    my electrics.

I have not yet figured out how to get reflex ailerons to still
functions ad ailerons when they are in the reflexed landing
    mode.

This is easy to do with 6 channels.

Looks like a nice/but expensive unit.

                                                       Regards,

Here's my two cents of experience.

A couple of years ago the craze of PCM recievers came up. With all
those nice gimigs like fail-safe and so on. Flying in the valley is no
problem but going to the hills (Alps) things change. With all those
electrical wires and the cables from those cableway (?) create enough
interference to send almost every reciever to it's fail safe mode. Now
everybody switched to PPM for flying in the difficult inviroment.

    Regards,
    Alfons
