1436.0. "OS .25FP - Archeologist Needed !" by BAHTAT::EATON_N (Nigel Eaton) Mon Jun 22 1992 09:41

OK,

I was rooting round my junk cupboard at the weekend when I unearthed an old OS
.25FP engine I'd forgotten all about. This beastie was last attached to a Mick
Reeves Hawk which demonstrated a remarkable new vertical landing technique.

SO! I've got the bug again, and off I go to my local model shop, to buy a new
toy to bolt to my old toy.

The guy in the shop refuses to believe that this engine is at least six years
old, he says they didn't exist then. I know better. I think. Can anybody back me
up ?

Incidentally the man's obvious senility didn't stop me buying a Flair "Black
Magic". I'm buying the things faster than I can build 'em ! (But not faster than
I can break 'em)

Cheers

Nigel.

I've had an old OS .25 FP for years and I'll tell you, you got a
jewel! Mine has a strap-on muffler and is of about '72 vintage. I've
verified this through old RCM magazines. The engine is very
dependable and is brisk by the standards of its day. It is easily
out-classed by a modern .25 such as my OS .25 FSR.

Take good care of it. I've used mine in various airplanes over the
last 5 years and its taken many a fine hit and come up tickin'. I was
quite surprised a few years ago when Eloy Marez in Model Builder wrote
an article in praise of that very engine.

As far as the hobby shop goes, take it for its source. As much as I
dearly love my RC buddies, they know of nothing smaller than a .40 and
will quickly condem any such engines or planes. I just smile and
start mine on the first flip.

Thanks John,

I was getting a bit worried, the man was so convinced. You're certainly right
about the engine being tough, that "Hawk" came down hard !

Cheers

Nigel

1436.3Six years is about right!!!BRUNEL::KIRBYMon Jul 27 1992 10:3511
I've had an FP25 for about 6 years too ... good little motor for the
price. Obviously not up to some of the more expensive units, but for general
"fun flying" it's great.

I'm not sure about 197x (re .1) however, maybe that was a 25FS,
especially with the strap-on silencer (muffler). My 25FP has a bolt-on
silencer ... the 2 bolts go through the cylinder head and the silencer is
tapped out to take them.
