I have started building the Great Planes P-51D, and will use this note
to review the kit. Mr. moderator, feel free to move this if
appropriate.
The plane is the P-51D. Span is 57". Recommended engine is 40-46 2
stroke, 60-70 4 stroke. I will be running an OS 70 Surpass. The wing is
based on the UltraSport airfoil, and retains the distinctive planform
of the real Mustang.
The kit is the usual Great planes high quality. Die cutting is
excellent, wood quality is good, and the plans and instruction booklet
are up to the high standards you expect from Great Planes.
I have both wing panels framed up, with top sheeting done. While the
wing is simple to construct to this point using the supplied alignment
block, the sheeting of the compound curves near the wing root is a bit
of a pain. Getting ready to start on the bottom side of the wing I ran
into the first negative of the kit. The slots cut in the ribs for the
gearblocks are not deep enough. I will need to do some minor surgery to
get the blocks recessed to where they will be flush with the 3/32
sheeting used on this kit.

That's a sure sign that they borrowed the wing from the Ultrasport,
because I remember having the same problem when I built my US40!
