DECRCM Video Volume 520 has just arrived.

If you desire to receive videos via DEC interoffice mail
first join DECRCM by loging to KAY:: as username DECRCM.
There is no charge or dues. See the next note for details.

OK - I gave up. I have started renumbering all the video tapes
so there will no longer be negative volume numbers. I even am
eliminating V0. All the volumes that used to be negative numbers
now start with 500. That is the old V-19 "Duraplane the Movie"
is now V519.

I normally would say at this time that if you want V520 send me mail
but not so fast...

I am declaring a VIDEO Emergency! See note 239.2536 for details.

======================================================================

Kay Fisher's review:

I can't claim to know much about Helicopters but it would seem to me
that this might be useful if you were so inclined. It has a mini work
book with the video.

I give it 2 stars.

The latest accounting follows: Remember guys - the only official
receipt you receive for your donations is to see them credited to
the running balance. As always the early entries (already in this

These tapes are owned by the DECRCM club and have been purchased from the
donations of previous viewers. This note is NOT about the tapes of DECRCM
meetings and their distribution. That information is in other
notes (but I don't know what ones).

The goal is to make the Video part of the DECRCM self sustaining without
any drain on the club treasury.

We (DECRCM) are soliciting for $1.00 donations. We want everybody
to watch but we only want you to contribute if you feel that the
video was worth $1.00 to you. Kinda like freeware. Try it first
if you like it and would like to see us purchase more videos then
and only then contribute. All donations are used solely for the
purchase of more videos. To date we have spent approximately $600
on videos and all videos have been in constant circulation with
DEC's interoffice mail system as authorized by the corporation.

If your are not a member of DECRCM you can simply join by setting
host to node Kay:: and logging in as username DECRCM. There is
no password and there is no membership fee.

If you have the hots for this some video send mail to Tallis::Fisher
with the subject containing "Request Vnn" or something
close and I will put your name up to the front of the list.

In case I haven't mentioned it before the strange mail you receive
from me is because I have an Emacs program that does most of the
mailing and your not always talking to a human.

The next note will be a review of all the videos and the note after that
is a complete accounting of all the donations and expenses.

Please Please Please be sure to include the volume number in the subject
of any mail you send me about the DECRCM Video club.

Kay Fisher's review:
    Video Plane:
I enjoyed this. 29 lb, 50cc Quadra powered. Had
Auto Pilot and transmitted video along with Airspeed
Altitude, Heading and Rate-of-climb info back.
1985 Scale Masters in Mesa Arizona:
Neither Al Casey nor his MiG 3 were to be seen.
Unless that was Al helping Frank Tianos Spitfire off
the runway when it nosed in and broke the prop off but
        the engine kept running?

See Kent Walter's Dauntless display it's dive breaks.
I've seen this up close and personal and I actually
didn't appreciate it so much until I saw it on the video.
Brian O'Mera(sp) sticks his P-47 in a Saquaro Cactus good.
Dave Platts FW190 dead sticks into dead sticks.
See Dennis Crooks Avenger unfold its wings and take off.
        Frank Tiano's Spitfire.

The finish hot rod section is 2 phantoms - better in
        person but still good entertainment.
    Pterodactyl:
I've never seen this on video before tho I have seen tons
of still shots. Paul MaCreedy(sp) of MIT who is considered
the father of human powered flight because of his success
with the Gossamer Condor and the Gossamer Albatross does it
again. Not enough details about the R/C system and onboard
computer and robotics and batteries were include to suit my
        taste.
    1985 NATS Sailplane:
Helmet Lekie(sp) flys his famous electrostatic Stabilized
        own design glider.
    Pietenpol 4 Review:
A Bob Martin kit. Looks very nice. It's worth watching
just to see a completely clean work bench with the cat!
    How to fly Helos:
If I bought a Helo tomorrow I would put myself back on this
video list to re-watch this section. Seems to be vital
        information (hints) for being successful.
    1985 Las Vegas QSAA
Very Brief. George Vogalsang (not DEC Littleton's George)
shows his 1/4 scale Wright Flyer.

I give it 3 stars. If you fast forward thru the AMA radio test
you can increase the rating to 4 stars.

I give it 3 stars. I ignored the Helicopter stuff.

    QSAA
The guy with the remote video TV camera is back this time
a plane that looks an awful lot like the Strojnik S2A
Motor Glider. This time with more telemetry coming back.
SE5 with full functioning controls and guages!
Yellow Bipe with wheels on the top and bottom. It actually
lands with the wheels it didn't take off on.
ME163 - George Vogelsangs pulse jet takes off with the help
of a bungee launch. The get flames out and he restarts
it in the air - big flame!
Electric Laser - with .60 cobalt and electric smoke system.
    Doug Pratt reviews:
DuraPlane - I should get one of these.
Peck Polymers Prairie Bird - I should get one of these also.
PAW .05 diesel - I don't need one of these:-)
    Frank Fanelli Sanding tools:
        Think Foam!
Slope Soaring - looked great - sure wish I could find a good location.

I give it 2 stars. Good start - weak ending

    RC Krash Kourse
If you like to watch planes crash (I used to) then
you will like this. There are lots of minor dings but
quite a few major crashes as well.
Helicopter Rotor blade covering and balancing
I found this interesting and I don't have any interest
        in helicopters (yet).
    1/4 scale cars from WCM
I was moderately dissapointed in this coverage. I was
much more excited to see the beautiful 1/4 scale cars in
person at the last WRAM show in New York.
Kit review of Sport Aviation's EZ P-51 and Focke-Wulf
This was very interesting. Not a big sales pitch like
you would expect. They almost convinced me - but I've

Kay Fisher's review:

    Top of New Jersey Club
They went to a very active club in N.Y. that had one
float plane site and two grass fields. I got to see the
giant PBY that was in the WRAM show fly. It had sponsons
that retracted into the wing tips. Fun to watch the
        club activities.
    K&B Engines
Fascination view of manufacturing of engines. As someone who
knows nothing at all about machining but would like to I was
        glued to the set.
    Jet Hanger Hobbies New F-4
1/10 scale F4 Phantom Leading Edge and trailing edge flaps.
A full flying stab with NO slop for stability at 150 mph. They
also show several Jet Hanger Hobbies planes that have appeared
in several motion pictures. Glider guys - if you can figure out
what Larry Wolfe is talking about in the flying stab description
please translate it into simpler terms and post it in the notes file.
Sport Flyers Corner - Doug Pratt
Electric info. If you haven't read any magazines in the last 4 years
you may find this interesting - otherwise this is a good time to make
        the popcorn.
    Custom Electronics - Cal Orr
Great stuff. Cal shows Servo drivers, failsafe throttle, field chargers,
servo end point adjust units, and last but not least - a redundant radio
system. Works pretty neat - it makes your existing radio transmitt on
two channels and he shows eithor Tx fail and eithor Rx fail and eithor
Tx get a direct hit by another person turning on their Tx on each frequency.
Looks like what you have to do to insure that $4,000 scale job. Kevin Ladd
        are you listening?
    NATS Pattern 1988
        Steve Helms
Chip Hyde finishes first with a perfect score (3,000 points)
Ivan Christenson finishes second with 2.981.044 points.
    The New LEGEND Helicopter
Nice demo with a GREAT autorotation at the end.
    AMA News with Geofrey Styles
Neat idea you can see that if you were a subscriber and not
on the engineering net this is a good way to know what's hot
at the AMA. But for our purposes - not too useful.

    I give it 4 stars.

Kay Fisher's review:
The ACE float fly was interesting - see a helicopter
land in water inverted. See Ken Willard.
The Quickie 500 was too quick - in 4 minutes you don't see
        anything very interesting.
Top Gun was OK - several spectacular crashes and I finally saw
        Dan Parson's Hornet.
Terry's Hobby Store is actually interesting this time. Was
just a commercial in Volume 13.
The Corbin Super Ace has a 15.5 foot wing span - but the coverage
was the day before the real flights.
The Helicopter FAI Team Trials was just pure trash and video
        of 35mm still pictures.
The "Scale from the Inside Out" section was outstanding and you'll
never see a more complex Zero than this show and tell!

    I give it 2 stars.

Execellant - Altho Kevin Ladd and I were there I didn't

helping at the flight line in the first few minutes and
Al definately is heard announcing during a large segment
of the tape about the 2nd 1/3. Also in the credits at the
end you see the infamous Al Casey. See Gene Barton total
his beautiful P-38 by loosing the starboard engine just
        after take off.
    World Helicopter Championships

IMAA "Rally of Giants" Oshkosh, 10th Anniversary
The guy from Connectic shows his Mike GRxx 6 cylinder Radial
engine made out of K&B 20 sportsters.
        Includes some float flying.
Sport Flyer's Corner - Doug Pratt
Doug field tsts some electric aircraft. This is pretty interesting
because Doug gives his opinion of several interesting electrics
and briefly flys each one. The following planes are covered:
            Goldberg Mirage
            Astro MiniChallenger
            Great Planes PT Electric

        Some good hints
    Great Quadra commercial
    The "Best" of Giant Scale
Two B25's scratch built by Don Albright - using Quadra 35's.
"Frontier" by Tailwind Aviation. This is a fascinating plane
with an aluminum spine and wing spars. It is worth the price
of the video just to watch the disassembly of this plane.
"Citation" owned by Ralph Braun. Notice I said owned by. Ralph
owns a full scale jet and contracted for two modelers to build this
model to match his big jet.
Pyrotechnics: Fred Anderson prepares a Zero for Byrons'
"Striking Back". Shows the type of bomb they install to blow up
their zeros during their big show.

I give it 3 stars. It was close to 4 stars but a bit short and I had
to send the first tape back because of audio problems.

Volume 500 = Striking Back V500

Actually the official title is "How to build and fly a radio

When you get mail about seeing the "How to build and fly a PT40"

very funny comments from the peanut gallery - especially when

Volume 502 = Jets V502

I made an impulse purchase this weekend and am donating it to the DECRCM.

This tape would be especially interesting to someone who is building
or thinking of building a ducted fan F15, F16 or F111.

It is just pictures of Jet operations with music - 45 minutes long.

Here is the marketing hype from the side of the box:

=========================================================================

You are in the cockpit of the world's most sophisticated aircraft. Ride
the U.S. Air Force's fighter arsenal, the F-16 Falcon, F15 Eagle and F111.
Nonstop air action including real combat footage!

You are in combat training, chasing a bogie over the Nevada desert at Mach 2.
You are refueling a F15 eagle at 20,000 feet. You are taking off in the sleek
F-111 fighter-bomber, the plane that bombed Khadafi's Lybia.

Experience the thrill of the world's most sophisticated aircraft, U.S. Air
Force style! Five, 5-minute chapters: "Combat", F-111", "F15 Pt I & II"
and "F-16".

Featuring a hot jazz/rock soundtrack.

Volume 503 = 1988 Scale Masters V503

The PropWash Video coverage of the 1988 Scale Masters Championships
in Fort Knox Kentucky.

Our local Massachusetts flyers and DEC's own Al Casey are prominent.

Contents:

Jack Buckley's WACO does an inverted flat spin.

You can see the top wing spoiler flaps deployed on Charley Nelson's
    WACO during landing.

Steve Sherwood's beautiful Staggerwing Beech actually lands with
    the wheels down.

A P38 lands with the wheels up!

Al Casey's MiG 3 does the only 8 point roll we have ever seen on a DECRCM
    video.

Dennis Crooks flys his SR71 - looks easy on the tape - you ought to see
this thing in person - it is awsome!

Bob Frey's 2nd place finisher P-47 does some aerobatics.

Bob Frienze(sp) flys his FA-18A Hornet to a first place win.

The tape is approximately 90 minutes long and at the award ceremonies just
as each pilot is awarded a plaque and some hardware they show a 10-20 second
recap of their winning flight.

Kay Fisher's review:

A well done job by PropWash Video.

I give it 4 stars and believe it is our most interesting video yet.

Volume 504 = Dodgson Designs Sailplanes V504

Dodgson Designs Sailplanes promotional tape.
It is approximately 2 hours long. It starts out pretty
slow with poor quality (very old videos) but slowly gets better and
better. Towards the end of the tape there is excellent coverage of
sloping and some crashes. At one point the video says

   THE END?

Then it starts getting really good with lots of clowning around.
Those who have ever talked to Bob Dodgson will appreciate the long winded
speeches he gives on the video and the obvious splicing. Bob has
a stuttering problem and this makes you appreciate the extra effort that
it takes for him to produce this.

I think if you like sailplanes you will enjoy this tape but if you
haven't gotten bitten by the sailplane bug you would probably find
this tape boring.

The sound track is mostly Folk/Country songs about flying. Where
else can you listen to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson while watching
Camanos flying inverted and Windsongs climbing out from a hand launch.

Volume 505 = Princeton Airfoil Tests V505

Not exactly what you might expect but modestly interesting. Gives
a good account of wind tunnels and exposes you to the real complexity.
If you ever had thoughts of building your own wind tunnel this video
will put out that fire.

They are also plugging a 397 page book "Airfoils at Low Speeds" which
contains a detailed description of the wind tunnel testing and all of the data.

Volume 506 = War Birds Mini Reno & Ducted Fan Fly V506

Donated to the club by Dave Hughes - his review follows:

My brother-in-law from Mesa, AZ sent me a great tape made by the Arizona Model
Aviators, including their mini-Reno pylon race (kind of boring, to watch the
races, but some nice scale war birds) and their ducted fan fly in, both from
this past summer. I never saw so many jets. It's a full 2 hours of (mostly)
scale planes, mostly flying. If somebody (Eric?) makes a copy for me I'd donate
the original to DECRCM.

the scheme on Kevin Ladd's Jug but from the little footage
it gets in the Video Kevin fly's better).
    Frank Tiano's Ki-84 Tony.
Dennis Crooks F-14 Tomcat which folds it's wings while doing a roll.
Jim Terrell's Short Sky Van with pitch-reversing props.

Read all the details in note 239.1664 by Al Casey.

The tape is approximately 90 minutes long and at the award ceremonies just
as each pilot is awarded a plaque and some hardware they show a 10-20 second
recap of their winning flight.

Kay Fisher's review:

A well done job by PropWash Video.

    I give it 3 stars.

Volume 508 = Vacuum Bag Wing Construction V508

Composite Aircraft Engineering & Supply Companies
video about "Composite Vacuum Bag Wing Construction".

It also includes a sequence on their arrow shaft hinging system.

Although it is keyed off their "Sucker" kit and arrow shaft
hinges - I think it is sufficiently general purpose to
be interesting and useful to anyone thinking about foam
core wings that is not already an expert.

Kay Fisher's review:

    I give it 3 stars.

Volume 509 = Harrier & other British Ducted Fans V509

A friend from the Mowhawk Valley Modelers (the Orange club)
mentioned that he had some footage on a model Harrier.
I send him a tape and he filled it with lots of other
Ducted Fan video coverage from the UK. It varies
considerably in quality getting better as the tape progresses.

This is a hodge podge of British Ducted Fans.
To me the highlight of the video is the progress
report on Mike Koskelka's Harrier. He is up to
his 22nd version after 10 years of development.

There is the first model Optica I have ever seen.
Sure wish those plans would be published - it was
60 powered with a giant scale span!

Here is what the supplier - Gerard Jones had to say
about this tape in his short note.
===========================================================
Dear Kay,

Here it is!, not a lot of Harrier footage but enough
to let you see that is has evolved quite a way over
the last 6 years, he is at the point of trying transition.
I'll ask my friends if he's done it. Also on the tape
is coverage of Philipe Avonds world champion F15 and the
new F14 plan he's selling through Hobby Horn (plans only).
Also included is the worlds first model turbine (Jerry
Jackman) and interviews of all the famous jet modelers
in England. Hope you enjoy it!
                                           Regards Gerard"

Volume 510 = RC Video Review #3

This is how their advertising describes it...

In depth kit and product reviews, building segments, and exciting flying
scenes featuring:

Super Lucky Fly 2 (Joe Pinkston) ARF Sport Low Wing Airplane
    D&R Aircraft's 1/5 P47
    Innovative Models' Master Scale Hurrican
    PICA's new 1/5 scale Spitfire
Innovative Models' SAAB Gripen (formerly Mike's Models)
    Satellite City's UFO Glue
    Robinaire's Custon Retract System

Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes
======================================================================
Kay Fisher's review:

I found it interesting and the last review of the Pica Spitfire
was very through. The $300 worth of discount coupons were a
major dissapointment - 10% off regular prices is probably 30%
more than we would pay due to normal discounts from list price.
I included the coupons with the tape and if anybody can use them,
    feel free to clip away.

    I give it 1 star.

Volume 511 = Vacuum Bagging Fiberglass Wings

This is our second tape on Vacuum bagging. This one
is quite different from the 1st one (V-8). In the first
one they used a sucker kit and bagged wings with balsa
sheeting. In this one they use a $350.00 vacuum pump
and use Fiberglass sheeting. This tape is from Channel
1 Productions.

Approximately 1 hour 29 minutes
======================================================================
Kay Fisher's review:

Very interesting if you like gliders or state of the art wing construction.
I give it 2 stars. It would have gotten 3 on content but the beginning
of the tape had the jitters.

Volume 512 = Cutting Foam Cores & Making Templates

This tape shows everything Eric Henderson did in DECRCM
plus it shows a one man foam cutting maching you can build.
They also supplied plans (one simple sheet) along with the
tape (will be included in distribution - if you want
an extra copy send me mail). This tape is from Channel
1 Productions.

Approximately 1 hour 29 minutes
======================================================================
Kay Fisher's review:

Very interesting - I really want to build the foam cutter.
I give it 3 stars. It would have gotten 4 on content but the
    tape had the jitters.

Kay Fisher's review:
Sort of a low budget tape. Some guys in clubs in Pennsylvania are
wondering around a few club sites taking videos. Kinda hokey but
I must admit I was chuckling for 30 minutes wondering what these
clowns were going to do next. Mostly inexpensive planes and almost
all crashes (maybe all) are caused by pilot error. One guy even
hand launches his power plane with the radio turned off - 4 times.

    I give it 3 stars.

Kay Fisher's review:
Some interesting design airplanes - especially the parasol.
Nothing technically surprising. Great airborne shots.

    I give it 2 stars.

Kay Fisher's review:

Mostly rubber powered planes and several shots of mass launches
(all up last down wins). Some great modeling and several interesting
scale planes. Some shots of powered free flight. One Electric.
Since this took place in Geneseo New York there is some coverage
of the National Warplane Museum. They have inside and outside shots
of a Beech C45 flight - it buzzes the flight line several times. Also
some outside shots of a B17 flying.

    I give it 3 stars.

Kay Fisher's review:

Extensive coverage of what they claim to be the largest
float fly in the world. If you like float planes you'll
be in heaven. I must admit they were mostly ACE planes
but given the area and the fact that ACE really caters
to the float flyer crowd I guess that is to be expected.

    I give it 3 stars.

Volume 517 = 1990 Scale Masters V517

The PropWash Video coverage of the 1990 Scale Masters Championships
in Dallas.

Our local New England modelers are prominent.

Contents:

    Locals:
    Kevin Ladd's P47
    Scott Foster's P47
    Jack Buckley's CAP 10B (sorta).
    Charley Nelson's WACO.
    Tom Kosewski's Fokker D-VII.
    Neil Snodgrass's Midwing Special.

International stars:
    Al Casey's MiG 3.
    Chuck Colliers P-47.
Rick Lewis, Gene Barton, and Diego Lopez's Skyraiders with folding wings.
Hal Parenti's Ryan Fireball (one Prop and one Jet).
Shailesh Patel's Navy Bicentennial F4B Phantom.
Bill Carper's P47 done up as "Little Demon" (exactly
the scheme on Kevin Ladd's Jug).
    Dennis Crooks F-15 Eagle demo.
Chip Mast's C130 (before and after fatal crash).
    Bruce Thorp's Space Walker.
Ron Gilman's F86 (Top Gun winner)

    3 Zeros
    2 Corsairs
    2 1/3 scale Cubs

The list is much longer - but you get the idea - almost every big name
scale modeler has a plane on this tape.

Read all the details in note 239.2208 thru 239.2237 by Al Casey,Kevin Ladd,
and myself.

The tape is 104 minutes long and at the award ceremonies just
as each pilot is awarded a plaque and some hardware they show a 10-20 second
recap of their winning flight.

Kay Fisher's review:

A well done job by PropWash Video.

    I give it 3 stars.

Volume 518 = Making Fiberglas Molds V518

This is our third "how to" tape from Channel 1 Productions.
It is the method that Kevin Ladd used to create the ME-110
fins that he showed at the last DECRCM meeting.

They show the method used by pros to make a mold that is
capable of producing 200 or more items. It is a very
long and difficult process. If nothing else it will
make you appreciate the retail cost of Fiberglas fuselages.

    Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Kay Fisher's review:

High quality and pretty well done. They could have
earned 4 stars if they did a better job of explaining
the exact name and availability of the products used
and second sources and altername products - such as the
    release agent.

    I give it 3 stars.

Volume 519 = Dura-Plane The Movie V519

Contents:

The Dura-Plane folks have created a video of crash testing and
various funny ways to crash a plane - such as...

    1. Shooting it down with rockets.
    2. Shooting it down with missles.
    3. Shooting it down with shotguns.
    etc.

Approximate run time = 30 minutes.

They were showing this movie at the WRAM show this year and
had a huge crowd around the booth - while they sold Dura-Planes
    for $25 and Dura-Bats for $35.

    Kay Fisher's review:

    This is really funny.

    I give it 3 stars.

Kay Fisher's review:

I can't claim to know much about Helicopters but it would seem to me
that this might be useful if you were so inclined. It has a mini work
book with the video.

I give it 2 stars.
