963.0. "Kit manufacturing" by CURIE::ANKER (Anker Berg-Sonne) Fri Apr 14 1989 11:25
Building the SKOOTAH TOO kits has been a really
interesting experience.
Cutting foam wings is a breeze. Two people can cut a
mountain of them in an evening once the templates have been set
up.
The Skooter II kit was designed primarily from how
effectively a 36x3 piece of balsa can be utilized. Just about
evey part comes from 3 of these. Its really fascinating. That
it flies well looks like an accident.
The balsa pieces were cut on a band saw 12 at a time.
Balsa pieces held together have very little tendency to slip, so
cutting a pile at a time is a breeze.
When you stack 12 pieces of 36x3 balsa sheet you discover
how uneven they are. Simply incredible. The problem is solved
by sanding a side on a disk/belt sander.
If you have a router, a bandsaw, a small circular saw and
a belt/disk sander you have all the tools you need for small
scale manufacturing.
You better not be allergic to balsa dust!
