849.0. "marine engines: breaking in and tuning" by SUPVAX::KERMIT () Mon Jan 30 1989 22:34

    A few suggestions,

When I want to run my Pay n pak I usually run it in the summer
in the Kids swimming pool. All you really have to do though is take
a bucket of water (2.5 gal works good) and run a piece of hose from
the bucket to the water jacket and using the siphon process allow
it to keep the engine cool while running the motor.
I like to run the boat in the pool with the bucket attached so
I can tune up the boat BEFORE I take it somewhere and it stalls
on the lake!!! If anyone has had a boat stall with no retrieval
craft they know what I am talking about!
Make sure that when breaking in the engine you run it rich to
allow for correct seating etc. Also that way you can be sure the
engine won't run too hot. If you can make it run in a small pool
without stalling then chances are that when you run it on the lake
it will run well and yours will be the one that runs consistently.
I have had this Paynpak for ten years and finally last summer
after much piddling around with it I have finally been able to get
it to run with the top on!! (Without the engine overheating and
    without flooding the motor!!

    				Good luck,
    				Steve M. in the Pitts....

849.1A few ???'s B4 I take the plunge!YIELD::STOLICNYWed Jan 17 1990 13:0625
    I am new to RC...recently aquired a MRP Mach 1 tunnel hull w/ a K&B
3.5cc outboard. (It's not broken in, yet.) Boy, I normally like
winter, but I can't wait for open water!
    	A couple of ??'s:
I have access to a friends pool, but I'd be very leary of sending
this boat on it's (my) 1st voyage on such a small body of water.

      1) While breaking your's in, I take it that you (hand ?) held the boat, at
a stand-still to give the engine somewhat of a dynamic load?
    2)	Aren't you concerned about the prop cavitating in the water, and
    *not* giving an appropriate load?
    3)	Is 40% nitro an OK mix to use for outboard break-in? (This is what
the shop outfitted my buddy with!)
    4) Considering the danger involved with a hand held (running) boat, I
was considering making a mount for the engine to "bench test/tune" in a
bucket (i.e. similar to large outboards in a 55 gal. drum?). Has
anybody done this or have any inputs as to what to watch out for? (i.e.
    cavatation, roost, different props, etc?)
    5) I understand your theory of syphone-feeding water to the engine for
cooling... My set up has a pick-up aft the prop...it's supposed to
use the roost as pressurized water to feed up to the head. Is this
not sufficient in your "pool" set-up?

    RE: muchly appreciated!

849.2Low nitro on break in..PFSVAX::MATSCHERZWed Jan 17 1990 15:4212
DON'T use 40% nitro to break in your engine! You WILL overheat it and
cause major trouble to it. You can use the 40% nitro after you break it
in. Use 5 or 10% nitro. The lower it is the better for break in.
Remember that the engine shouldn't be so hot that you can fry an egg
    on it!
Also you are going to need a large, large body of water. I would
recommend a club to assist you as this model when going fast, is
    dangerous.
By the way I have a Pay-n-pak Unlimited Hydro & a Dumas Swamp buggy.
