651.0. "Is AMA membership required??" by CSSE::MILLER (Normal Insanity) Thu Aug 11 1988 09:56

I attended the meeting on the 9th, paid my dues to both the D.E.C.R.C.M.
and the Greater Maynard chapter. Now that makes me the only member there who
is strictly interested in surface R/C and a non-AMA member.

The receipt of the insurance policy from the AMA was then reviewed.
The policy clearly states coverage for "Cars, Boats and Rockets" though at
a lesser rate than Aircraft. Sounds good so far.....however it raised
a serious question (at least to me):

Since the insurance is under AMA.......

Do I have to be an AMA member to run my car at a DEC field/track
	insured by AMA???

As the AMA does not sanction Road events, nor does the magazine have anything
to do with cars, as a non-flying member I would then be paying in excess
of $50/yr. for the use of the track and no real benefit from AMA membership!!!!!

The officers agreed that this is indeed an issue that needs clarification and
will be following up on it.

Stay tuned for the latest.

    Ron,

You aren't alone, I didn't make the meeting but I'm not into
planes either. I'm sure we can work something out....

    Ron,

I didn't make the last meeting but I'm also a surface only
member. It seems we are growing in number.

re: the past couple

Thanks for the support. I knew that I was not the only ground hugger in
the club and appreciate the replies (in fact, Willie, your name was mentioned
at the meetting :-))..

"Working something out" may well not be as easy as it may sound. It is
one thing to get "Permission" to hold a rally in a DEC parking lot (as a
single or at least infrequent event) but the concern I have (and the possible
restrictions) are based on the fact that this will be a "Formal" DEC site
for continuous use. It is this formality (though needed, especially for
aircraft) that may well require the strict enforcement of insurance
restrictions (since the club will be leasing the land from DEC with guarantees
of insurance coverage, etc.). I could well understand a Digital/Club stand
of "You may not fly/drive here without coverage" but I am not willing,
especially at this novice stage, to fund AMA approximately $40 (over and above
the club(s) membership) and get no value from AMA other than now being covered
at the DEC field/track.

We are in the process of battling with the AMA over the same issue
for Model Rockets. Most of the kids in our club aren't covered,
and it is my understanding that if they cause an accident, then
our club insurance is not valid either! This is obviously not waht
we want, but at the moment the only way to be safe is for every
person on the field to belong to the AMA.
