I've built the Coverite Black Baron Special and I'm presently building
the Coverite Art Chester Jeep.
The instructions with the Black Baron were extensive and the instructions
with the Jeep were minimal. The wood quality was good in both cases and
overall I would not hesitate to build Coverite kits if I desired one of
their kits. One interesting plus (or minus depending on your outlook) is
that the Jeep kit was missing a balsa block for the cheek just aft of
the cowl on the bottom. I called them up and they shipped it ASAP no
questions asked. The kit had sat in the local hobby shop for over a year
so it is possible that someone looked inside and it dropped out before
I purchased it. Haven't got the Jeep up yet (worked on wheel pants and
canopy last night) but the Black Baron Special flew real nice. Both planes
seem to be real sturdy (probably also heavy).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think OS only makes one size Wankel now
and it is rated as a .30 (there not real cubic inches in Wankels).
If you're looking at a 1.27 HP .40 size it must be one that is out of
production. If this is true you may want to jump on any opportunity
to get a large one.

334.3 | Wankel displacement and power | ARCANA::JORGENSEN | | Sat Oct 24 1987 19:21 | 12 |

Kay, You are right and wrong. A Wankel CAN have displacement.
This is the reason O.S. calls their Wankel a "49." It has
4.97 cc dis. or about .30 ci. A Wankel just dosen't have a
"real" bore and stroke like their two and four stroke counterparts.
An O.S. 40 fsr/abc has 1.2 hp @16,000 rpm with a weight of 320 grams.
While their Wankel has 1.27hp @17,000 rpm with a weight of 335 grams.
Hence the .30 Wankle seems to be a logical alternative for a .40
size application, and perhaps slightly more realistic in
apperearance and sound.

If you want high rpm, you might want a 2 stroke. Unless you like the
shape of the Wankel or something.

The Wankel is somewhat difficult to classify. Your correct in that one
revolution of the rotor there are 3 power strokes. But the output shaft turns
3 times the speed of the rotor. So what you have is one power stroke per shaft
revolution. Put another way, the firing interval and torque is equivelent to
a 2 cylinder 4 stroke, or a single cylinder 2 stroke.
The power is very high for a 4 stroke. 1.2 bhp @ 17,000 rpm. That's also
a phenomenal rpm level on the shaft (The rotor is 1/3 the speed though).
Is it heavy? If you compare it to other 4 strokes, it's very light, and by
quite a margin. It puts out more power than the Surpass .70, and weighs
almost half as much. The power to weight ratio is extremely high by 4
stroke standards.
Although its displacement is .30, when you compare it to other 4 strokes,
it's more roughly a .60 in operation. That better explains the power and fuel
consumption too.
So did I succeed in thouroughly confusing everybody? 8^).
What I'd like to know is how do they well do they last? I remember when
Mazda was perfecting Wankels for cars, they had a devil of time getting the
apex seals to last longer than 60,000 miles. How does this engine fare?

> What do they sound like?
All I remember is that it didn't really sound like a 4 stroke. It wasn't
loud like 2 stroke either. This was a long time ago that I heard one. I haven't
see one in operation recently. I wish I could tell you more.

OS redesigned the Wankel in 1982. The Wankel they have today is not
the same engine that was around in 1973. The redesigned engine has more power,
the separate cooling ring was done away with, induction is no longer through
a hole in the front plate but through a peripheral inlet port, along with the
exhaust. It's also lighter, smaller, and no longer round in shape.
