206.2 | I do! | INTRPD::SHATARA | | Sun Jun 28 1987 18:55 | 5 |
| I already have oil filled shocks......any other ideas. Could I
have too much oil in the shocks?

| Like alot of people, my son and I started with a Hornet.
I've spent a little time on dirt but don't claim to
know a great deal about offroading.
There are some inherent problems with the Hornet that
you may not be able to fix. The biggest problem is
unsprung weight. I don't believe there is any way to get
around the fact that the rear suspension carries the trans-
mission and motor. The best shocks made might help, but
the car will never handle bumps like your RC10. You can
easily put twice the money the car cost into upgrades and
not be happy with the results.

206.4 | NO AIR ALLOWED | SCRAWL::COMINS | | Mon Jun 29 1987 13:55 | 9 |
| Any shock should be completely filled with oil. You can change
the weight (viscocity) of the oil in the shock, but there should
be NO air in the shock.
Can you adjust the spring tension (coils over the shocks)? I've
found that less tension on the spring helps when the car bounces.

206.5 | Unsprung weight | CTHULU::YERAZUNIS | VAXstation Repo Man | Mon Jun 29 1987 17:15 | 12 |
| It's the unsprung weight that's killing you. Because the inertia
of the motor/trans is high, it continues moving up even when the
bump is long past...
No real way to fix it, except to buy a Frog... :-(
Going to VERY soft springs in the rear (just barely enough to keep
the vehicle halfway up the shocks) might help a little.
Note that the unsprung weight is asymmetrical, since the motor is
offset to one side. Lose, lose.

206.6 | Live Axle | NORDIC::COLBURN | | Mon Jun 29 1987 17:18 | 8 |
| It hops because you have a live axle for the rear suspension
Both the Grasshopper and Hornet have a live axle so the whole back
end squats when you hit a bump or dip.You should have bought a Frog
which for my money is the best entry level kit on the market for
under $100,and it has 4-wheel independent suspension.

206.7 | | EARTH::SCANTLEN | | Tue Jun 30 1987 13:07 | 8 |
| I believe the hornet's rear shocks allow the use of inserts in the
shock assembly that effectively stiffen or soften the 'shock'.
These are used depending on the terrain at hand. One solution might
be to configure a spare set of shocks for the expected terrain,
and substitute accordingly.

206.8 | inserts = pistons | SCRAWL::COMINS | | Tue Jun 30 1987 17:21 | 9 |
| In my Kyosho shocks the 'inserts' referred to in .7 are called the
shock piston. Three pistons come with each shock. The difference
in the pistons is that they have varying numbers of notches in them
that allow different amounts of oil to pass by. This controls the
rate the shocks can be compressed/decompressed. I haven't experimented
with them yet (I have been very happy with the current setup).

206.9 | for all the help. | INTRPD::SHATARA | | Wed Jul 01 1987 22:48 | 14 |
| Thanks for all the help. I have added weight to the rear axle and
this help alot. I am also adding wight to the mid section. The
car doesn't ip at the stest turn now.
I will be experimenting with putting a spr on the tab which extends
from the box toward the front of the car. A new rockbuster wter,
which this time is a hornet clone has this feature. This should
dampen the gearcase from hopping.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

| Why don't you buy the hop up kit that they sell for the rockbuster?
I think it comes with a larger engine,new shocks and sway bars.

206.11 | BUSTER HOP UP KIT? | INTRPD::SHATARA | | Fri Jul 03 1987 10:06 | 5 |
| I haven't seen the hop up kit for the rockbuster. Is it available
locally? The hop up kit for the hopper only includes the 540 engine.
