121.0. "helicopter aerobatics" by BASHER::DAY (I might as well be parking cars) Wed Apr 08 1987 08:11
I've now had several goes at flying my helicopter, and
each time there's a slight improvement.I think I'm getting
hooked,they're so addictive.To make matters worse,John Wallington
,the UK Helicopter Champ came over to our field to give a
demonstration of aerobatic flying last Sunday. It was AMAZING,
he did consecutive inside/outside loops,axial rolls,vertical
climbs that would do justice to a rocket as high as most people
take their planes,rolling dives,autorotations,stall turns,
pirouettes,fast backward flight..... Simply stunning.....
He was flying a Baron 60,with fiberglass
rotor blades (I doubt that wooden blades would stand pulling
out of the rolling dives).
Another UK Champ,Len Mount was 'sposed to turn
up,but he got lost. He's keen on inverted flight,I've seen him
sustain an inverted hover a mere 18" from the ground... These
two have a party trick where they fly around with one helicpoter
flying inverted, rotor to rotor a couple of feet above the other.
Oh well,p'raps one day....back to the hovering practise
for now.
cheers
bob

121.1 | Yep, that's AMAZING! | MDADMN::EATOND | Dan Eaton | Fri Apr 10 1987 12:27 | 17 |
| Hi Bob,
I know what you mean by AMAZING after watching one of our local
masters of the art. This fellow fly's a KING COBRA with weighted
Yale Tru-Spin blades. The only thing he didn't show me was hovering
up side down. He can do it but right now he's devoting his practice
time to getting ready for the AMA NAT's this summer. His last KING
COBRA kissed the ground at the bottom of a high speed loop when
he accidentally tripped the invert switch. So untill after the NAT's
the "inhibit invert" switch will remain on.
Watching somebody like that can be inspirational but it can also
be a little dangerous. I noticed that the next time I flew I had
the urge to rush things along. Wisely I resisted the urge. I still
get into trouble all on my own without trying something fancy.
Keep em hovering,
Dan Eaton
