143.0. "Getting started. DIESELS" by UTRTSC::MACKNEY (Globe Trotter) Tue Mar 24 1987 05:34

Can someone give me some background info on using diesel engines.

I have one in an assisted glider, but it is probably older that
I am. It is difficult to start and harder to tune. Twiddleing with
the funny screw on the top doesn't seem to do much to keep the engine
running when I chuck the glider!. Maybe something else is wrong
    with it.

I have also bought another diesel engine at a bring-and-buy sale.
This on doesn't have a peg in the top to limit the range of the
compression, aloowing the screw to go round and round.

What I need to know is:

o - How do I choose the correct setting for starting

o - Does the motor need priming

o - Should the motor be peaked out as say a glow engine

    John.

    John,

I don't know much about the diesel engines, but I have a friend
in St.Louis that uses them all of the time with success. His
name is Dan, I can get you his phone number if you want to talk to
him about them. I won't publish his phone number here until I have
    talked to him.

I will attempt to answer your questions as I have watched Dan
    and learned some.

o To start the engine you need to increase compression... as the
engine warms up you should be able to back-off of the compression
somewhat to get the engine to run smoother.

o Dan always primed the engine... much like a glow engine.

o The problem with tuning a diesel is that you have two settings
to play with... the needle valve and the compression. It seemed
that Dan would wrench down the compression and then start the
engine. I would run rough... like a car with a raised cam (high
RPM and then low RPM). After letting the engine run a little
while to warm up he would rev the engine and adjust the
compression until the thing smoothed out a little (some times
he would let it off too much and the thing would die). After
this he would peak it out with the needle valve... much like
       a glow engine.

One more thing. Dan used a higher piched prop than you would expect.
I don't remember the details but I remember him saying that the
secret to performance is in pitch and not RPM's.

I must say they sound much different than a glow engine (much more
quiet). If you want help just let me know and I will send you
    Dans phone number.

    Hope this helps

    Jeff
