2034.1 | pressure-relief chair cushion | WRKSYS::RICHARDSON | | Wed Feb 05 1997 10:03 | 8 |
| One of my friends did that by slipping on some ice, years ago. I don't
know about now, but there wasn't a whole lot that could be done about
it at that time. The doctor gave her a doughnut-shaped cushion to put
on her office chair at work so she wouldn't be putting any pressure on
the tailbone while it healed. I don't recall how long it took to heal,
though - she was pretty uncomfortable for a while.

2034.2 | Literally a pain in my ass!! :-0 | SHRCTR::SCHILTON | Sacred cows make the best hamburger | Thu Feb 06 1997 07:23 | 6 |
| Well, I have broken a couple of the little bones down there, and
was given prescription-strength naprosyn and some tylenol with
codeine for when it really hurts. No cushion, though...still,
I've got enough padding of my own :-)

I'm sure I broke mine, but never went because I figured it didn't much
matter, since they can't really do anything.
It IS helpful to know though ....
1. You might get a donut-shaped pillow that you'll love!!
2. You might get some pain med that would make you more comfortable
3. You might get advice like hot tubs/no hot tubs that could help
4. You'll know for FUTURE information
5. You'll have a better idea of how long it would take to heal (I was
sore to sit for ~5-6 wks)
6. There may be something different/better that they can do now
.... I did mine several years ago "sliding" on some frozen snow and hit
a HUGE ice-bump that was the equivalent of a large rock. I couldn't
get up for ~10 mins, could barely walk for the next few days, and was
sore for weeks.
A couple years after that, going down a slide at funworld (I guess I
should stop pretending I'm a kid!! (-:), which DUMPED you on the floor
at the bottom, was as painful as the first time - though luckily took
less time to heal.
It happens frequently during childbirth as well, so I don't get the
impression that it's a very "strong" bone in the first place!
Good Luck!

2034.4 | Check It Out | POLAR::YOUNGV | | Mon Feb 10 1997 21:15 | 11 |
| Just a side note,
My sister-in-law fractured her's as a young girl. When she went to
deliver her first child is when they found out the true repurcussions
of this because of the way that it healed. It stopped the baby from
coming down her birth canal the correct way, causing her to have a
cesarean section. By the time they found all this out, it was too
late to save the baby. So, I would recommend that a female that was
still to have children to get this checked out.

2034.5 | Broken tailbone | HOTLNE::YOUNG | | Thu Apr 24 1997 18:21 | 4 |
| I broke mine about 4-5 years ago. It was very painful for months. I
slept on my stomach and sat w/ most of my body off of the chair. To
this day like if i'm going on a long drive or at the movies I have to
get up and walk around.

2034.6 | Swim rings helped a lot to ease the pain | RTOIC::MHAESTERS | Look on the bright side of life | Tue Apr 29 1997 11:41 | 7 |
| When this happened to me I bought a couple of those inflatable swim
rings for children and used those to sit on in my car and in the
office. It worked fine!
