| About 8 1/2 weeks ago I was involved in an accident that left my 3/4/5
metatarsals broken and the soft tissue in my foot severely damaged. X
rays were taken of my ankle and no fractures were apparent. I was in a
half leg cast for 5 weeks and have just begun to fully weight bear on
my foot. My ankle is still swollen, although this reduces with ice, but
it has started to ache a little when I've walked about a lot, including
after physio, the ache doesn't last and the ankle has felt noticable better
when I've rested and iced it. The thing, is whilst non or slight weight
bearing, ther was no pain of this type at all. Am I worrying
needlessly about the possibilty that a break did occur and that the
doctors just didn't notice it? Should five weeks totally non weight
bearing in a cast have fixed it any way? Is it just aching because I
haven't used it for so long?
Thanks
Richard

The only way to know for sure is to talk to the Doctors and the physio.
Muscles that have not been used in 5 weeks are going to be flabby. With broken
bones and tissue damage, there have been significant internal bruising, and the
surrounding muscle and tissue attempts to protect that. While we cannot tell
you "You're right", my suspicions would be that you answered your own
question. Some muscle and tissue damage can take months to recover. My
M-I-L was hit by a motorcycle a year ago, and still has soreness in places
at times attributible to that accident.
Bottom line, if you have questions, talk to the Dr. or Physio. If the pain
persists and doesn't ease, talk to your Dr. You may be overdoing the walking
etc. (Pain means you've gone too far ... No pain no gain is for macho fools!)

| The physio had a fiddle about with it this morning, and the pain looks
like it is due to inflamed nerves in the ankle area.
