1558.0. "What are you doing Sunday" by ASDG::DUFFY () Fri Mar 21 1997 14:29

Some guys are talking turkey...someday I hope I will
be able to add to the conversation, since I can't I'm
gonna tell ya all my plans for this Sunday the 23rd..

Pheasents season ended here in Mass Thanksgiving weekend
and we all seem to be out of birds. And with the nice
weather coming upon us and MARCH maddness in full swing,
cookouts and game feeds are a happy part of my life.

Sunday morning 4 hunters and 2 very seasoned dogs (yellow
lab and a golden) are heading out to the local Pheasent
    farm to refill the freezers.

I know it's a rich man hunt ($21 a bird) and you do know what
fields they stocked them in, but you do still have to find them
and knock them down. But once a year I will treat myself and my
dog to this little treat. Its a good time had by all. Last April
we went out on the last day, got 20 birds for the price of 15,
with the same 2 dogs and walked away 3 hours later with 18 of the
    20 birds.

I/we will be out in the fields @8AM with 3 good friends and myself.
2 of the guys are real pumped since they are getting to hunt over
these 2 dogs (they don't care much about me and my buddie they just
want the dogs). The dogs are starting to get quite a good reputation
around the club, not only for putting birds up, but they never loose
a downed bird. 1 of the guys was kinda hedging on going and I thought
we were going to have to start a raffle at the club on who was going
to be the 4th so many people wanted to join us. No..my chest can't get
any bigger, it was bursting with pride. I could go on all day about
my all-star/hall of famer dog (at least in my book..)

After we get our bird we will go back to the house and start cooking
2 or 3 birds up, watching college hoops, maybe a cold 1 or 2.

I almost have the same feeling as the day before opeing day, fed the
dogs some special treats from the table last night just to say good
    girl for sunday....

So....what are your plans for this weekeknd

    Duff,

One of the guys that I am going to turkey hunt with just went to a game
farm last week in Indiana. They only found 3 of the 10 pheasants
released, but did get 8 chukar. I have never done that, but it sounds
like you will/are having a good time.

1558.3this is what happenedASDG::DUFFYMon Mar 24 1997 12:2054

When we got to the farm the guy who runs things started things off by
saying " the birds have been acting weird lately and you will be very
lucky/good if you put up half of what you put out, they are running
and have been flushing out of range..

Our response was, the dogs will make them fly, his respones was, well
I hope so, and we will see....

As we drove into the fields that we were suppose to hunt (2 trucks)
both dogs were in the truck I was in...Well, the Golden spotted a hen
as we drove into the field, when my buddie got out, the dog followed him
out the door, and before we knew it the first bird flushed 15 feet from
the truck with 3 of the 4 hunters still sitting in the trucks, and the
4th standing watching it fly...5 minutes later we start to hunt, the
first bird is taken without a shot being fired, Sandy (the golden)
pinned a hen underneth a hay hummuck. 20 min later we were back at the
truck dropping off the first 4 birds. One of these 4 birds had a great
retrieve, the bird was shot at by 1 hunter, and we started giving him
the "there flys yonder a dead bird, sun was in your eyes" kinda thing
when we started into the woods to follow it up, when a couple a minutes
later the Lab (Kelsey) shows up with the dead ringneck in her mouth.
Bird didn't realize it was dead until it flew aways first...

Well things slowed down a little bit after that but not by a whole lot.

I could gone on and tell you a little story about every bird that went
up and down, but I do have to work sometime today. But, there is one
    more I will speak of..

Kelsey puts up a hen in the middle of 1 of the 3 fields we are hunting
and 2 of us gets 1 shot at it and it just continued to fly (we didn't
shoot a second time because we were shocked that it didn't go down,
going away open field shot at that) well we watch it fly out of the
field and still gaining height when I saw it just drop out of the sky
in the middle of one of the other fields that was ours maybe 200/250
yards away, so we started after it. Got to where I thought it might
have dropped, about 75 or so yards away Sandy track down the bird and
    handed it to me alive.

In all we had 3 birds fly without a shot being fired and 2 flew away
laughing at the author of this note, but we still managed to walk away
with 11 of 12 bird we bought. We wanted so bad to get 100% because
of the way the guy who ran things was talking before we went out.

Then we went home and cooked up 3 bird is an olive oil/apple vineger
garlic with some pasta, watch some b-ball and talked about how good
    our dogs are....

    Still pumped the day after

Well my weekend was spent around the clock out in a computer room doing
standby. No fields, no wind in my face, only the noise of computer room
fans. But wait there is a good ending!

I came home saturday afternoon to find in the mail my choice week
turkey permit and the new Midwest Turkey call supply catalog.

    There is a god.

Now to get some time to order some toys.

My buddy called me today from Ky (the one that went to the game farm)
and I got more details on his outing. He said the dogs were furnished
by the game farm (no wonder they didn't find them all). The dog he has
been working with is only a year old and is not ready yet, according to
him. He said it was a nice way to end the season, especially since a
friend of his paid for it all!

We started talking fishing/Turkey hunting and ended up planning a
fishing outing this Friday. We are taking my 2 boys (4 and 7)
bluegill/crappie fishing for 1/2 the day. I am really looking forward,
as the ponds he has lined up are supposed to have some nice fish in
    them.

    Fire that skillet up boys!!!!

    Wess,

You guys got some great weather for your 1/2 day friday..who wants
to make plans to go out tomorrow here in the northeast...

Tell your buddie the best way to get a dog ready is to get them into
birds, and your sure to get a few at a farm...

    Duff,

GO WILDCATS is right! The guy that I was talking about is a huge
Wildcat fan, of course basketball has an immense following in KY. With
U of L and U of K both, it adds some real competition. I like it, but
am not obsessed, I save that for the outdoors...

Sorry to hear about the weather up there, somebody should shoot that
    damn groundhog.

12 days till I load the van and head for TURKEY CAMP!!!

I was referring to the WILDCATS that WON....:*) I hope they run
Pitino out of town....right up to Boston to run the Celtic green
I wonder if they would just trade coaches....
Carr for Pitino kinda sounds like Rick Roby for Dennis Johnson..
