1554.0. "NH Trapping Ban Bill" by MTADMS::RUMAN () Wed Feb 05 1997 08:43

Well New Hampshirites, the time has come. The Union Leader has a
story this morning on a trapping ban bill. Fortunately, it looks to be
shot down relatively quickly. F&G voted unanimously against it, but it
definitely sends up a red flag for both hunters and fisher(people).
Mass. pushed it through so we'll have to be on our guard. The usual
pros and cons were mentioned. Suffering animals and pets vs. popula-
tion control, lost revenue, and additional costs for nuisance animal
control. The paper didn't appear to take a side on it. We seem to have
a few voices in our favor. Mentioned were the fact that stray dogs that
aren't looked after by their owners are the only ones in danger and
wildlife management and heritage were brought up. The one thing that
bothered me the most was Beverly Leo of NH Humane Org. saying that
trapping is a barbaric practice and that there is a strong connection
between violent crimes against humans and brutality against small
animals. How people can come upon such logic is totally ridiculous.
At any rate, we are going to have to keep on our toes and make our
voices heard to block these attacks on our livelihood. A sad day, but
this is getting to be the norm throughout the various states in this
day and age. If we don't actively oppose these measures, we will
certainly see our freedoms slowly dissipate. As has been stated in here
many times before, once they start with one measure, they continue on
until they try to keep you from taking your kids to the local pond to
catch a few panfish. Don't allow it to happen.

    Eric,

Let me get this right... A connection between human violence and
    small animal trapping...

I don't remember seeing too many inner city gangs while being afield, I
guess I must have missed them. Hummm....

Something else to make me shake my head. It is hard to believe.

1554.2Huge RED FLAG!!!!!MSBCS::MERCIERThu Feb 06 1997 09:0318
You Say......."Fourtunately, it looks to be shot down relatively
quickly. F&G voted unanimously against it, etc...."

Sorry, but so did Massachusetts F&G. Soon there will little peta and
propaw people standing outside Grocery Stores with petitions to get
a vote to stop the cruel practice of trapping........They like grocery
stores. For some funny reason there is more of a sympathetic vote.....

    Good Luck..........

Call SAM (Sportsmen's Alliance of Maine) and ask how you can get
organized before you all get chisled apart like us Mass Dummies are.
Maine Sportsmen saw the light many moons ago!!!! Now they are a huge
lobby.........We in Mass are out lobbied 6 to 1 still.

Ditto what Bob said...
It came across the House as H5779 and was resoundingly defeated in committee.

Not only were the F&W opposed, but the following were against it as well:

Executive Office of Environmental Affairs
Dept. of Environmental Management
Dept. of Food and Agriculture
Environmental Law Enforcement
Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) the people in charge of the Quabbin
Dept. of Environmental Protection
F&W Board

The PETA/ProPaws people had petitions signed and it was placed on the ballot.
It was presented to the public falsely and the people bought it lock, stock
and barrel.

You have the foresight to fight it now... you know how they do it, and you know
their going to.... what you do about it NOW, will speak volumes later.

Or you can be fat, dumb and happy till they bite you in the ass come november.

I have to agree also. When we first heard about it and the groups listed
in the previous note all came out against it, we all thought the ballot
question would be severely defeated. After all, it was obvious that anyone
knowlegable in the field was against it.

NEVER EVER doubt the passion of the PETA people and how ruthless they will
be in their pursuit of their goal. We all saw the tear-jerk ad featuring
the traps which had been banned many, many years ago. We all saw
three-legged Fido (as if all injured pets were the result of traps).
We all saw petitions and banners at shopping malls and major intersections.

We did NOT see video of Fido and friends tearing a deer apart; we did not
see video of starved and emaciated deer due to over population. We did not
see video of the ever increasing big game/car encounters resulting in great
property loss and death. We did not see video of the result of beaver (or
   other rodent) overpopulation.

No one presented or fought for our point of view. We relied on the common
sense of the electorate. We learned a lesson.

Please, people of New Hampshire, do not take this lightly; the great
suburban masses can be easily swayed by tear-jerk tactics. Fight back.

Thanks for all the input and the good advice guys......and keep it
coming. The more avenues we have to fight these measures, the better
    off we'll be.

Well, I overheard a member of NH Wildlife Federation saying that this
bill was shot down something like 286-56. If this is the case, round
one goes to us, but we had better keep on our toes, because these ill-
informed people don't give up easily. I'm sure we've just seen the tip
    of the iceberg.
