1510.0. "Whitetail Scouting - 1996" by ACISS1::ROGERSR (hard on the wind again) Sun May 19 1996 23:32

Time to start, is it not???

Snow is gone (all 60+inches of it) in the U.P. My wife and I decided to
do a deep woods scout (12 miles round trip - in and out) This is the
area where the stress index was 140 for most of the winter. The DNR was
guessing 50% or so winter kill.

My stand is only about 1/4mile in and we were not moving slowly or
silently. Imagine my surprise when we got to the runway into the dense
stuff and stood face to face with three magnificent (does??). They
looked healthy, sleek, and alert. They were as surprised as we were and
beat a hasty retreat into the cover (this was at 1pm). I saw no fawns
and expected none. I doubt any survived the 30in snow drop on the last
    week of April.

In all off two days of scouting every known major trail, we found only
two carcasses, both of yearlings. All in all, I think the 1996 season
may be salvaged. Granted, there were far less deer in other places than
in the "triangle" but maybe that's because Olivia and I trimmed the herd
pretty good in the early season.

Had visitor's on my farm this weekend. I've got a lowbush blueberry
farm in No. Central Massachusetts....Out in the pasture, which are
still wet from recent rains, I found the tracks of 3 deer followed by
a moose. On Saturday, my adjoining neighbor had his beehive ransacked
by a bear. There have been numerous bear sightings in the surrounding
towns as they search for food. Last years nut, seed and berry crops
were dismay due to a very hot, dry summer. followed by a deep snow,
long winter and wet spring. They have been feeding on bird seed and
    suet.
As for the moose sightings, what can I say but it's spring and a little
get together seems in order... tracked them down towards the swamps but
backed off as the ticks are abundant.
In twenty years of farming this has been a first. Usually it's turkeys
and coyotes, not the larger game.

Hey Boyz and Gurlz,

It's the Buckmaster calling. Y'all remember me. Buckmaster Bob from
Jawja? Hey Wess! I went scouting this week. I dumped about 600 pounds
of corn out, tended to the salt lick, and set up the spot lights for some
serious night hunting. I can't get them from the road anymore, cause the
law is catching on to me. Anyway, shot a couple does out of season last
week.

All in all, that was just a joke. If you know the Buckmaster, you know
I'm full of it.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. And the ONLY thing I miss about
DEC, is hunting notes. Everyone have a good season. Hey Wess, I bought
a Browning Omni cam and sold the Screaming Eagle.

The Buckmaster can be contacted at 770-962-0274. Call during business
hours, that way it doesn't cost you anything, just DEC.

good hunting,

buckmster
