A liitle late, but here it is anyway...

According to yesterdays Worcester Telegram, the MSCPCA is hosting a
workshop tonite (Nov 6) beginning at 6pm at the Auburn Public
    	Library.

The free workshop is to inform the public about an initiative
petition to outlaw trapping in Massachusetts. The petition is also
seeking to ban the use of dogs in the hunting of bear and bobcat,
and to allow non "sportsmen" to serve on the Fish and Wildlife
    	board.

A recent court decision have made trapping once again legal in this
state. It had previously been banned since 1973.
     	End of note

This was found in the canine notes file

Perhaps an expansion on the basenote is needed to clarify what this
    petition is seeking to accomplish:

      1. The petition does not outright ban trapping in Massachusetts,
but seeks to outlaw the use of leg hold and conibear traps.
These traps were outlawed for use on land for the past 22 years.
The use of box and cage traps (already required during parts
of the season for skunk, opposum, and raccoon) would still be
         allowed.

      2. The use of dogs for bear and bobcat hunting would be disallowed.
Bear and Bobcat hunting would not be banned. At least 9 states
(including Alaska, NY, and Pennsylvania) already have similar
         bans.

      3. The Fisheries and Wildlife currently consists of 7 members, 5 of
whom must have held for at least 5 years a valid fishing, hunting,
or trapping license. This petition would remove that requirement,
in effect opening the board to non "sportsman" individuals.

1482.2Guy should you move this string to 1469? thanksLUDWIG::BINGThu Nov 09 1995 11:487

This was also discussed in note 1469.*. The anti's are going all out
on this one and they may win too. There are very few people in MA
who hunt bear with dogs or who trap. Unless we ALL as sportsman stand
up and say no this will happen.
