1440.0. "MA to increase ALL licenses" by LUDWIG::BING () Mon Mar 27 1995 05:54

Last week there was an article in the paper about hearings in
MA to up the price of licenses. What they want to do is increase
all licenses $10 unless you buy sporting license which will go
up $20. There will be NO increase in the amount of pheasant or
trout stocked, you will need to buy pheasant/trout stamps for
that. More hearings are supposed to be scheduled so watch for
    them.

Read some more on this the other day. Looks like:

    Hunting up $10
    Fishing up $10
    Sporting up $20
doe permit, turkey permit, bear permit all up $5 for a total of $10
    archery stamp ?
    primitive firearms stamp ?

yes they plan on seperating the two. All of this and not one more
pheasent/trout to be stocked. All administrative costs. Oh boy. $45
    dollars for a sporting license.

At my last B.A.S.S. fishing club meeting this topic came up. The
state was actually looking for input. From the MASS BASS affiliated
bass fishing clubs. We filled out like a 20 question questionaire. If
I remember correctly we said no to raising resident Hunting/Fishing/
Sporting licenses. While raising the non-resident fees. Massachusetts
has one of the lowest non-resident hunting fees. Compared to the
    surrounding states.
We also suggested a seperate trout fishing fee of $5. The state
does not stock hunting animals (except Birds). Yet, hunters pay extra
money for a doe permit/archery/duck/turkey/bear. Yes, its all part of
game management. We still felt that hunters end up paying more in the
long run then fisherman. While a regular fishing license lets you catch
anything. If a fisherman wants to keep the trout he catches pay the extra
    $5.
I think a couple of the questions. Also were around seperating
fresh water/salt water fishing. Having a seperate fee if you wanted
    to fish salt water.

At my B.A.S.S. meeting last night. We were told its official that
all the fees are going up. What Walt posted in .1 is correct.
Everything going up $10 with Sporting going up $20. With extra permits
    going up $5.

I read an article in New England Out of Doors (?) the other day about
this increase. Basically it said that while the F&W folks can't give
the sportsmen of MA more fish/pheasents, there's no reason why they
couldnt extend archery season by one week and extend blackpowder from 3
days to one week. Just so we got something for the extra money.

It sounds like a good idea to me. Personally I don't think adding the
extra time will have much of an affect on the deer population, and
it will give us extra time in the woods. I know if they extended BP to
one week I'd go but a BP gun this week. To me it's not worth it for
3 days. Anyway the writer suggested we all write to the F&W dept and
ask them to do this in response to the license increase. I plan on
sending a letter this week and will post a response if I get one.

    	Walt,

The F&W actually came to a Mass Bass Federation meeting
and asked for our input for increasing the license fees, None of our
    sugguestions were used.
If you look at it from a hunting standpoint, you pay extra for
a sporting licence, extra for doe permits, extra for turkey, extra
for ducks, extra for archery, extra for Black Powder, etc... Yet, you
can fish all you want for ONE price. They probably spend just as much
money stocking trout as they do on Pheasant/Grouse. If you want to
fish for Trout, get a $5 Trout fishing licence.
