1428.0. "Cat problem...HELP" by 38252::MARSHALL (N1QDW) Thu Jan 19 1995 09:05

I need to find out where to get a have a heart trap. It needs to
be big enough to catch a cat. I live in Rhode Island and work in Mass.
Mail order is okay, anyone know where I could get one? I have a nice
little cat that likes to spray my back door with marking urine and
this stuff stinks. I want to catch him and turn him over to a shelter.
Or better yet find out who owns him so they can pay to have my porch
    de-fummed.

    thanks much,
    Kevin

All of the outdoor catalogs (Cabela's,Gander Mountain,Bass Pro) will
have these advertised. Before you go out and spend a fairly large
amount of cash I would get in touch will the local Animal Control
Officer or the ASPCA as they would most likely have acces to those
type of traps. Another way to cure the marking problem is to spray
ammonia on the areas that it's spraying on. This is also a way to
young house hold animals from going the bathroom in your home in the
    same spot.

                                                   Good Luck,

.....re: -1 that was my first choice or my bow. But I live too close
to folks that could witness the act so I have to do it the humane way.
I did find a trap at the hardware store today at lunch. They wanted
$20 to rent one and $47 to buy one. I bought one.......here kitty,
    kitty, kitty........

1428.5way too many cats!35989::GEIBELLfiremen:Find'em hot leave'em wetThu Jan 19 1995 15:5032

      Kevin,

i know what ya mean about the problem with cat's, people have
no idea how destructive they are, good thing you dont have carpet where
this cat is spraying, it would probably need replaced if it got
sprayed, and that is one smell that is hard to get rid of.
And when they let the cats run loose they dont realise how many
birds/squirrels/rabbits they kill. plus how many problems it causes for
other people's animals, there is a big yellow cat that has been
strolling around the fence in my yard, really antagonizing my 2 labs,
well last saturday afternoon while I was splitting wood I had the dogs
out with me, low and behold this cat comes strutting across my yard
like he owned the joint, Mo spots it and he's all over that cat like he
stole something, as it turned out mo & Jo put the cat up one of the
trees in my yard and then they layed down under the tree, I guess they
figured that sooner or later he's gotta come down.
I tried the trap this week but he wont go in it, the owner was
notified, if the owner wont take care of the problem we probably will,
the dogs go ballistic when this cat comes by to torment them, not only
does it upset me since I dont enjoy hearing dogs barking at 3 am
neither does my neighbors either, the wife was complaining about them
chasing the cat, she said wel what are ya gonna do if they get out and
chase the cat out on the road and get hit? I said well I dont know
maybe go see the owner and swat knots on his head faster than he can
rub'em. she didnt see the humor in my comeback, but I dont know what I
would do. so its better to fix a potential problem before it becomes
    one.

                                                               Lee

If the cat keeps roaming in your yard in the middle of the
night, upsetting the dogs, get the " BRIGHTEST " motion
sensitive flood light you can find and aim it at the owners
bedroom window. Maybe he'll take the hint and keep the cat
in-doors after being awakened a few times....;-)

	P.S I like cats..........They taste just like chicken :-)

This discussion reminds me of a time when I was running traps for
'yotes. This one spot had a lot of 'yotes, but they were very trap
wise. Alot of my traps would get dug up. One set there got a
skunk that made the area hard to go back to. Another set there got
a wild tom cat. This animal was fending very well for its self in
the wild. It was probably about 30 pounds. When I first put the
light on it I thought I had a bobcat worth $$. When I got closer
I saw what I had. In the soft dirt all around it were fresh 'yote
tracks, lots of them. This tom was pissed and I soon learned why
the 'yotes only made tracks around it. Now I have let dogs out of
my sets without any problems, but this was another story. I first
tried to pen it with a long forked limb. He ate that thing. I'm
sure if he had gotten out of there, I would have been shreaded. He
	didn't leave me any choice.

       Lee,

One of my problems is I have a wood thresh hold and the smell
has permiated the wood. I may have to replace it, I have also had
to get rid of my welcome mat. I put a copy of my "license to carry"
on the door and that didn't work. I wish I lived in the country I
could use the bow practice. I put the trap out last night and the
little bugger didn't show up. I even gave up a good can of tuna
for him.......here kitty kitty kitty. I wonder if the owner would
be responsible for his cats actions. I know that if my english
setters got out of the yard and did something to someone elses
yard I would be responsible. Maybe I'll keep him after I catch him
and place an add in the paper just to, you know meet his owners!!!

    /Will keep you posted

      Kevin,

I have heard that pure asprin will uuuhhhhhhh well make them go away
just put it in burger. how tame is this cat? if its real tame maybe a
good ole fasion TT treatment will do the trick. if not go to last
resort. if you go the TT route, well never mind, I am sure some guys
    know what that is.

I have found the only good reason to have a cat!

On a long sea voyage you take a cat.
When you catch fish , you first feed them to the cat.
If the cat dies you dont eat the fish!

Problem is it only works the first time...

I had the same problem with an ole tom cat...
Very trap wise, tried everything to get him into a
trap. A combination of fresh fish, water, and catnip
did the trick of course I was able to catch every cat
in the hood. but time was with me.

The cat did a fine job of chewing up the guy at the
animal shelter, this extended his life a few days until
they were sure the cat was not rabid.. I tried to tell
you the cat was mean....

As much as I have the same love for cats as most of the rest of you do
we may be going a little to far with this one. If someone from Soapbox
or another one of those vocal forums gets wind of this note it may not
    in our best interests. IMHO

Ahhh Gi'day...

Cats here are a pest that are responsible for the extinction of MANY
species of native mammals. This includes many "pet" cats from houses
    adjoining bush areas.

The cries of "Innocent" from cat lobby (such as the "Cat Club") would
drown out O.J.'s cries of the same. In spite of similar overwhelming
    evidence.

We have a disease in the wings ready to reduce cat numbers but the
Animal Welfare lobby and cat people have been effective in staying its
introduction (so much for suburban environmentalists).

Cats outside of the control/territory of a possible owner are shot on
sight. You mightn't like it, but that's the way it is.

Just a note...

As conservation director for the California Izzac
Walton League, I had the oportunity to work with the US
department of fish and Wild life. During this time we
were working on an endangered species of bird. It could
not be determined why the bird was in one cannon but would
not survive in another. After serveral weeks of searching
we came up with the answer. Coyote's lived in the cannons
that had ample bird species. We found that stray cats
didint live in the cannons with the Coyotes.. This is due
to the fact that Coyotes like to eat cats.. Many cats are found
missing on trash day each week.

Cats are effective predetors and cause extensive dammage
to the natural animal species..

Regarding the "Soapbox" folks, I have all intentions of taking care
of this problem in a humane way that is why I invested in a $47
have a heart trap. I could have done this a lot cheaper and a lot
quieter. The problem with our society is that we cannot speak whats
on our mind without wondering if we put someones nose hair out of
joint! I ensure all involved that this creature will be turned over
to the proper authorities. It all reverts back to the owner not
doing his/her part as a responsible pet owner.

As far as an update on the cat situation the little bugger as started
to spray my front door and my trash cans! It must know that the trap
is at the back door......trap wise maybe.....hummmm the hunt continues.
