1419.0. "Noel Feather......POACHER" by 35989::GEIBELL (lost in Pennsylvania) Wed Nov 30 1994 11:59
The article is in the Feb 1995 issue of bowhunting world, its
coppied with out permission, and all the other mumbo jumbo needed to be
legal.
pg 8 in the up front department:
HOW TO BECOME A FAMOUS BOWHUNTER----------NOT
Noel Feather, who parlayed his supposedly uncanny whitetail
bowhunting skills into a lucrative multi-media and product marketing
buisness, has been exposed as a poacher.
Feather gained national recognition in the early 1980's after laying
claim to several huge whitetails. he entered some in the pope and young
club recordbook, and used them to launch his bowhunting buisness.
The true circumstances surroundind his previous trophies may never be
known. However in september, he pleaded guilty to four federal
conservation violations. he admitted killing two whitetails over the
limit in december 1991 and january 1992 on a texas ranch. he also
admitted shooting three deer in Missouri without permits and
transporting them illeegally to his Illinois home.
Maximum penalties for the crimes are 20 years in prison and/or a $1
million fine. Feather was sceduled for sentencing in november. he has
already forfeited 10 whitetail deer trophies, a mountain goat
trophy, venison, and videotapes. he has withdrawn his membership with
the Pope and Young club and his entries in the recordbook.
Feather joins Don Lewis of alabama as the newest members in a rogues'
gallery of poachers who would be famous hunters. Lewis was convicted of
poaching elk in Yellowstone National Park and other offenses.
conservation officers found videotapes in his possession when he was
arrested in utah with illegally taken mule deer. the tapes showed Lewis
and a companion shooting a bull elk and on a hunch, the officers sent
the tapes to Yellowstone Park rangers. the rangers immediatly
identified the kill site as within park boundries, and Lewis was
convicted on that evidence early this year.

| Sounds like a huge case of greed to me. Looks like Miles Keller is now
the main man.

I read in the paper the other day where a Maine State Trooper
shot at a decoy deer on private property. he was charged with
criminal trespass and failure to display a hunting license, then
placed on leave with no pay. Said he didnt do anything wrong, the deer
was on private property not him.

re: .2 >>>the deer was on private property not him.
The trooper must have thought he was being threatened (possibly by a
large set of antlers) and needed to use deadly force....or maybe he was
just shooting the deer for trespassing :^).

P.S. Do you know if he was on or off duty? Was it the F&G guys that
busted him? (I've hear of them using decoys)

| There was a county cop about 5 years ago who shot a doe with his pistol
at night and got busted in Oldham County Ky, while on duty! Needless
to say he isn't working for the County anymore.

re.3
As far as I remember he was off duty and the F&G did bust him.
The landowner had been complaining about people illegally
"hunting" there so the F&G set a trap for the poachers. I'll
look and see if we still have the paper and post the article,
it was a short one.
