1411.0. "1995 Colorado hunting season information" by 29067::J_HENSON (and it's still too short!) Thu Nov 10 1994 17:09

The 1995 Colorado big game hunting seasons have just been set. The three
season format for elk and deer will be used, as it has been for the
past several years (at least 5 that I know of). Season dates are

	first season	Oct 14-18
	second season	Oct 21-Nov 1
	third season	Nov 4-12

One significant change (in my opinion) is that buck hunting will be allowed
during the first 5 days of each season. In the past few years, buck
hunting was only allowed in the first 3 days. Also, buck hunting in
the 3rd season will be by permit only. That is, you have to apply
for a tag and draw out to hunt bucks in the 3rd season.

Antler point restrictions for deer will be retained for 4 game units
south of the Grand Mesa. I don't know what units these are.

"'We should keep a special opportunity for hunting larger bucks', said
commissioner Rebecca Frank of Grand Junction, the primary advocate of
keeping the restrictions despite assurances from the DOW that they
have proven ineffective."

Application deadline dates for all limited licenses is April 4, 1995.

The commission also subtracted the months of April and May from the
lion-hunting season to protect lion cubs. The new season dates are
Jan. 1 - March 31, and Nov 13 - Dec 31. The DOW was give 12 additional
hunting permits to compensate for the loss.

The article I read didn't come out and say it, but it appears that the
change to the mountain lion season was to prevent another ballot iniative
such as the one that stopped spring bear hunting.

The commission also approved a limited-license bear season, to run from
Sept. 2-30, as well as allowing over the counter tags with each of the
three deer/elk seasons.

1411.1muzzle loading permits delayedCSC32::J_HENSONDon't get even, get ahead!Tue May 30 1995 10:3228
There was an article in Sunday's Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph that
stated that permits for special muzzle loading hunts and other special
hunts would not be issued until late June. The delay was blamed on
their system, or administration thereof.

As permits for special, early-season muzzle loading deer and elk hunts
are only available through a draw, I am assuming that this means that all
muzzle loading permits will be issued late. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, the article only said that permits for other special hunts would
not be issued until late June, but didn't say which 'other special hunts'.
Can anyone fill in the blanks on this one? According to the regs, all
permits should have been sent out last week. I haven't received anything,
and am wondering if anyone else has.

The article also mentioned that there would be a special late-season,
close-in muzzle loading, shotgun type hunt for deer at the Air Force
Academy. By close-in, I mean areas like the golf course and other
parts of the Academy that are close to housing, offices, class-room
buildings, etc. Hunters for this will only be allowed to use weapons
with limited range such as shotguns and muzzle loading rifles. The
kicker to this is that these permits will be issued BEFORE the state
issues limited draw muzzle loading deer permits. So, if you have
applied for a muzzle loading deer permit, and are considering the special
Air Force Academy hunt as a backup in case you don't draw out, you're
out of luck.

Has anyone received anything back from the DOW in regard to a permit
application? I'm wondering if all permits are delayed.

My understanding is that you should still get a point for this year
    if
you didn't draw on your first choice. If you put in for a second
choice or a general season tag it shouldn't cancel your point(s)
received this year or accumulated from prior years. Is that how
        everyone else read it?
1411.12the results are in (almost)CSC32::J_HENSONDon't get even, get ahead!Fri Jul 07 1995 15:355
I bagged a buck antelope tag (southern half) and a muzzle-loading buck deer
tag. Since I only applied for a preference point for elk, I'll have to
make do with over-the-counter.

1411.13public meetingURQUEL::J_HENSONDon't get even, get ahead!Wed Aug 09 1995 12:1140
This is kind of late, but I just read this in yesterday's Canon City paper.

If you hunt or plan to hunt in Colorado units 57,58,581, 59, 511 or 512, you
may want to listen up. In case you don't have your unit map handy, these
units cover the area north of the Arkansas River between Salida and
Pueble, west of I-25, south of the Douglas/El Paso county line and U.S.
Highway 24, and east of the Arkansas River from Buena Vista to Salida.

Three public meetings will be held to take comments on a
draft management plan with the following goals.

  1) To reduce or eliminate competition between deer, elk or antelope
herds and domestic livestock for food, and

  2) To help with damages to pasture fencing by the same big game herds.

The plan has been drafted by 12 committees made up of local sportsmen,
land owners and land management agencies.

The first meeting was held last night (August 8) in Salida. The second
in Canon City tonight at 7 p.m. at the BLM office located at 3170 E.
Main St., and the third on Thursday (Aug. 10) in Divide.

You can contact the DOW office in Salida at (719)539-3529 between 8
and noon for a copy of the draft. It wasn't stated in the article, but it's
my guess that you can also call this number for the exact time and
location for the meeting in Divide.

I plan to attend the meeting in Canon City tonight. If anyone is
interested in attending this one, send me email.

According to the newspaper article I'm citing, this information is
from a news release. The article didn't say who issued the release,
or when it was issued.

This seems to be awfully short notice. Perhaps news of this was made
public earlier and I just missed it.
