1406.0. "Antlers, how do you treat them?" by 31216::STEINBACH_KE () Wed Nov 02 1994 17:46

Does anyone know how to treat antlers that were in half velvet?

I've had my antlers outside for over a month and it none of the velvet has
come off. As you can tell this is my first one and I would like to have
it mounted on a plaque. Am I doing this right? or is there another way?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ken

If you want to get the velvet they will need to be injected
with a some kind of embalming fluid to preserve the velvet.

If you want bare antlers then you would scrap the velvet off
softly with some type of an edged tool. When hunting Caribou there is
a choice made when caping the game out. You may want to talk with a
"good" local taxidermist on which way is best to handle your problem.

If I remember right I think the rack could also be freeze dried to the
velvet could stay attached. Like .1 said , talk to the taxidermist.

IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WITH A DEEP FREEZE
YOU CAN PUT THE ANTLERS IN THERE FOR
ABOUT 6 MONTHS UNCOVERD.THIS WILL CAUSE
THEM TO FREEZER BURN.AFTER THAT TIME FRAME
REMOVE THEM AND RUB THEM WITH FINE BORAX
THIS IS USED SO YOU DONT HAVE BUG PROBLEMS.
I'VE DONE IT TO A FEW NEVER HAD A PROBLEM
    YET.HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT.

Speaking of Antlers has any one else seen pictures of the new
World Record Hanson Buck. It scored 213 1/8, 6 inches more then the
Jordan buck. What I find even more amazing is that the deer was
estimated to be only 3.5 yrs old.
