1405.0. "Califorina has Hunting" by 31216::STEINBACH_KE () Tue Nov 01 1994 14:42

Hello fellow hunters, I have been a reader of this note for some time
and felt it was time to be a contributor. I live in Northern
Califorina and have been an avid hunter for the last 7 years. I've
hunted Dove,Quail,Pheasents,Ducks,Pigs and Deer. This past year has
been a very successful year with my first buck. It was a 4x3 Mule Deer
taken from Zone X9a in Mono Co. near June lake. It field dressed at
105lbs. (not very big, but big enough for your first).

Waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway has been pretty good. I hunt on public
refuges and have a 75% bag on four outings so far. Plan on going to
Grey Lodge on Saturday for my last day of the first half.

I enjoy the stories and the insightful information passed on by
      fellow hunters.

      Keep it up!
      Ken (ZVO Sunnyvale)

    Ken,

Good to hear from the west coast....you guys have it rough out there
with the anti's and limited hunting areas.

    Congrats on the muley!!!!

How's the mountain-lion situation going ? Those anti hunters seem to
be winning some battles out there...

1405.3Mountain Lion Status31216::STEINBACH_KETue Nov 01 1994 19:1935

    Rick,

The mountain lions are doing there fair share of damage to the deer
herds, but with the developnment of land into thier range seems to be
getting more attention. I think with every encounter people have with
these cats the more frightened they become. With the death eariler this
year and the subsequent stalkings I believe there could be a change
within a year or two. It's unfortunate that it takes somthing like this
    to make change.

As for as the limited hunting areas. Its pretty tough especially
when your hunting pigs or pheasents. Beleive it or not there is a lot
of public land for deer. It all depends on which zone you draw for.
With waterfoul the state has a pretty good system. In most cases you
apply for reservations and if you get drawn, you have an exellent
chance of getting your limit. With this years population its projected to
    be an tremendous season.

Rick do you mainly hunt deer?

You guys must be starting your rifle soon or have already started?

Is your season during the rut? Unfortunately most of our seasons
range from July (for bow) to earily November (rifle). This is well
before the rut for the Blacktail and Mule deer herds.

If I have some time tomorrow I'll try to tell my story on my first
      buck.

    Ken,

I'd say 80% of my time is deer hunting, the remainder is waterfowl and
    upland game.

Our archery season runs from mid-Sept to mid-Dec, Muzzle-loader is
for 10 days usally starting the 3rd saturday in Oct...and the shotgun
and rifle season began today which will run to 11/27.

According to Fish & Game our rut peaks around the 11/15 timeframe
however, bucks are getting into gear now...If I had to put a timeframe
around this I'd say that up to around October,15th bucks are mostly
interested in feed...From the 15th of Oct on they start to be more
interested in Doe...and around the middle of November, when 80% of your
    doe are hot..the rut peaks.....

Once the rut is on the Whitetail buck thinks of nothing else and all
predictability is out...here in the north..our bucks are of the 200lb
class with the average in the 180's...

Hunting in N.H. is tough..real tough....I honestly believe that if
    a N.H. deer steps out of the hemlock/spruce..they're lost...our
visibility on the average is 30 to maybe 40 yards...

I like to hunt big-bucks, and the best time I like to hunt them is
very late in the season....doe season is closed, the weather is
"AWful"..average temp. is 32 degress or below...and the only hunters
who are hunting are die hards...you pretty much don't see anyone else
    hunting in this nasty weather...

Big bucks are still in rut but it's somewhat gearing down....this
time of the year I hunt the doe-units...find the doe, pattern them,
    then take a stand and stay-PUT..you'll freeze..but you'll connect..
(hopefully)....you also need to be a half to a mile and a half
from any road....whoa..sorry for the rambeling......I just lost my
    mind and was trophy hunting...

Here in N.H. we're kind of fourtunate...we can hunt mostly anywhere...
don't need to apply for reservations....as long as the land is not
posted and is away from houses and such we can hunt...............

            Good-Luck To you!!

    Rick

I hunted X9C there were 800 tags and only four buck taken the whole
season. I must have seen 50 does but only one little 1X2 buck. Where
do you hunt for ducks? I have about 500 decoys and am an avid duck
hunter. I am on my way to Montana for Deer and Elk, my contact says
the temp is in the high teens (- 17) at night. Sounds like good hunting
weather to me... Lots of snow. By the way X9a is the best area to pull
tags on the eastern siera you lucky dog.

Maybe we can hunt ducks when I get back from montana.

I am in the China Lake office just south of owens lake. Although the
weather has not been cold enough to force the ducks down here. The
wister NWR had a good opening day with an average of 4.2 ducks per
hunter for the weekend... not too bad...

    Hi Joe,

Hopefully your Montana hunt was successful. Just getting ready for the
second half. I apply for just about all the refuges but I mainly go to
Mendota,Grey lodge or Sacramento. For the second half opener I was
drawn for Salt Slough. Never been their before but I'll give it a try.
Its located next to the San Luis Refuge, this area was recomended to me
by fellow hunter. The area is supposed to be mainly Mallards!!! the DFG
people told me that the area is mostly watergrass with some tullies.
The worst part about new areas is trying to find a decent blind in the
    dark!

Are you going on the opener? If so, where are you going?

Maybe we can get together and hunt at Mendota? It looks like its about
half way between Ridgecrest and the Bay area. I usually hunt just about
every Saturday depending were I get drawn.

I just had to clean the garage this weekend. the wife was afully mad
about a problem with loose decoys. I cant help it a bag failed and
there were several dozen mallard decoys loose in the garage.
I have made a tally of the decoys and heres what I currently have
    3 dozen Mallard floaters
    1 dozen Mallard silhouetts
    4 duck butts (feeders)
    18 Pintail floaters
4 blue bills (I dont known how I got these Yard sale?)
    8 green wing teal.
2 dozen Carry Light Snow geese.
    8 Snow Geese full body.
2 dozen texas Snow geese (plastic)
6 Carry Light Honker Supper Magnums.
1 dozen Carry light honker regular.
    1 dozen flambaeu floater honkers.
1 flambeau floater (how I have just one is beyond me!).
    1 Blue heron confidence decoy.
2 flambeau Turkey hens. (added to the list to spur interest in turkeys)

I am on my way to pko in mass for the weekend and three days next week.
Scouted owens lake and found only a few birds there weather is still
not cold enough. what kind of ducks and geese have you seen up state?
Would you like to hunt Wister in the salton sea. Its a bit of a drive
but there are loads of ducks. Mendota sounds about the same distance
for me as wister. I can try anyplace sacto is about a 6 hour drive.
there is also the kern NWR but I have not been able to find it and they
only hunt on Sat. The wife wants a goose for Xmas so I have to get with
the program. Maybe next year I can take you to Utah, I hunt great
basins there and mallards. The cost is not bad and you can get
permision from the farmers to hunt the rivers on there land (they hate
the ducks) let kme known a date and I will apply for whichever site you
wish. I always get picked #1 when I apply "not".
