1403.0. "Stranded Hunters" by 8530::TEJA () Wed Oct 19 1994 12:01

This last weekend it snowed heavily in the high country here in Colorado. I
have been bothered by the way the news(?) has been reporting missing/stranded
hunters. Maybe I am being over sensitive but in the news(?) reports I have
heard there seems to be some implication that the hunters were
ill-prepared/helpless/(add your own 'Elmer Fudd' type descriptor here).

To the contrary, in the footage I saw it looked as though most of these hunters
were in good shape, maybe a little hungry and tired, but generally no worse for
wear. That's not to say some of them weren't very glad to be found, but overall
I think most were prepared and following proper survival procedures.

Why are hunters always portrayed as bumbling fools, either shooting each other
or needing to be rescued?

Any thought?

1403.1too many anti-gunners out there8672::KILGOREI'm the NRA and I VOTE!Wed Oct 19 1994 12:4623
When we came over Wolf Creek Pass on Saturday around 2 pm, there was already
8 inches of snow on the ground. We noticed a blazer parked in a `no parking'
section of the road (snow slide area) and between the blazer and the hiway
was a 3 foot berm of snow made by the snowplows. The hunters had just
returned to their vehicle, finding they were going to have alot of shoveling
to get out onto the hiway. Hope they had a couple shovels in the vehicle. By
seeing this with our own eyes, these hunters appeared real stupid. Duh.

BTW, this storm hit hard and fast. For alot of people out enjoying a great
`fall' week, it was a surprise. We were enjoying a week of camping in south-
eastern Utah when we woke to snow on Saturday morning. We had heard of the
possibility of rain but no snow was in the forecast. And they were predicting
up to 18 inches of snow for Wolf Creek and it got 48 inches instead! So this
was a surprise for alot of people. Smart people go prepared no matter what
the weather for any possible condition that could crop up.

But I think the biggest problem we are up against is the anti-gunners. If
we can be presented as bumbling idiots, we definitely should NOT be trusted
with these bad guns, should we? If we are irresponsible and get lost or out
in bad weather, we look stupid. And stupid people shouldn't have guns. BS.
We've got a long haul ahead of us.....

Has anyone else in this notesfile been in the Durango area recently?

I'm headed there this Friday, and want to hear the horror stories up front,
if you will. ;-)

1403.3coulda been much worse!!29067::SCHIMPFWed Oct 19 1994 23:5518
    Been there done that....

    Storm was forcasted with very short notice; Only small anticipated amounts
    of dump..They "the forecasters" were not able to predict the total
    amount of snow. And if one was already in the high country and
    was enjoying an absolutly beautiful fall day, you had no clue
    as to what was coming in.

    I can hear it now,  "they should have been listening to a radio";
    Most of the hunters where prepared for bad weather tho'.
    The hunters that were lost, had too much confidence in their
    ability to find camp in harsh blizzard conditions. Lucky they
    didn't pay the ultimate price.

1403.4Accidental shootings and lost hunters always get bad press....8672::KILGOREI'm the NRA and I VOTE!Thu Oct 20 1994 10:2013
I did hear about an incident somewhere (not sure if it was Colorado) about
a father shooting his son. It was foggy and the father heard a noise and
shot at the noise. He probably will have a hard time living with it. :-(

There was a special section on hunting in the local paper and it talked
about the number of accidental shootings in the 1960's compared to today
and they were way down. The hunter saftey courses (for everyone born
after 1949) are what they gave credit to.

I'm surprised not to have heard more about this shooting. I'm surprised
the anti-gunners and animal rights people didn't have a hey-day with it.

    a little late but always ready.

    I just returned from Montana, It snowed four feet in two days. We had a
    great time. The snow did not stick to our tent as we had a heater
    (Coleman 5000 Btu Catalitic) works great. I used Cross country ski's to
    get to the elk. It was a great hunt although I was not able to get the
    Elk I shot as he crossed the border into Idaho and the Idaho game
    warden told me that I would have been fined if I went after him. I
    carry a space blanket, space sleeping bag, water resistant matches,
    two MRE's (much better than the old K or C rats), compass, rope,
    Ham Radio, Dry socks, a saw bladed knife, water, and big trash bag to
    sit on. I carry it in all in a fanny pack that I have customized to
    have shoulder straps to get the weight off my belt.

    I have been caught out in a bad storm before and had to spend the night
    in the woods, I made a shelter out of snowballs and tree branches
    placed the space blanket on the ground and used the space sleeping bag
    to sleep in, I didnt have to build a fire as the temp was not that
    cold. The next morning it was still snowing but not as hard as it was
    the night before. I sawed two branches from a pine tree and interlaced
    the branches into a makeshift pair of snow shoes. Then I tied these to
    my feet and headed to camp. On the way back to camp I took a 4 point
    elk. Im glad that Im ready.
