1402.0. "Successful Moose Hunt in N.H." by 17576::PAPPALARDO () Tue Oct 18 1994 18:05

Thought I would share this hunt with you folks. Over the
weekend I was invited to be part of a group of hunters (5) of which
only 2 could hunt for moose. The two lucky hunters from Ohio entered
the NH Moose Lottery and were picked for zone A1 which is Pittsburg.
For those not familar with this area it most likely has the largest
moose density of the state. One of the 2 men is a relative of a friend
that hunts with my family. The 2 men came in on saturday (10/8) and
spent a few days ensuring nothing was forgotten at home and resting up
from the long distance. On monday (10/10) they took a day trip (3 1/2
hours each way) too Pittsburg to set up their accommondations for the
upcoming week of scouting and the 9 day season if needed. On the same
night my younger brother met up with the other members of the party and
went over topo maps of the area and made suggestions of were to scout.
On thursday (10/13) the 2 permit holders came back too Concord to attend
the mandatory Moose Awareness program on the do's and don'ts for the hunt.
On friday (10/14) we left to meet the others and scout around. Before
nightfall I saw 9 moose in total. One was a huge cow and a very
respectable bull which I was able to get video footage of. The plan for
opening day was the two permit holders would hunt a defined area and we
would hunt birds until 11:30 and meet them back at their truck. On the
raod to the area we would hunt birds a good sized cow crossed the road
and while driving by it I noticed a spectacular bull on the hill looking
down towards the cow. I turned my truck around to try and get video
footage of him but he went over the hill and out of site. At 11:30 we
headed to meet the moose hunters after shooting 1 Grouse and 1 Woodcock.
Upon arriving to the site we noticed another truck parked near our
companions and everyone just standing around. As we approached closer
you could notice ropes off the back of the truck. Our companions had
taken a 720 lb., 9 point (5x4) Bull Moose about 100 yards into a clear
cut. Boy was there smiles on everyones faces as we pulled up. They told
us it took them almost 2 1/2 hours to drag it too the logging road. After
a picture and video session we used my truck to pull the bull up into
the bed of the pick-up. At the checking staion we found that the moose
was the 12th to be checked in and the largest was a 920 lb. cow. Once
the game wardens took all the measurements and information they tagged
it for tranportation. We hung around to watch another bull come in that
weighed in at 810 lbs with 16 points and a 50 1/2" spread. On the way
out the roadway another bull was coming in that was really huge and we
later found out it weighed in at 1,002 lbs. When we were leaving to come
back home on sunday (10/16) we were told of 3 hunters that lost their
moose to violations. The first shot his 243 feet from a roadway and like
any other type of hunting you must be 300 feet from a roadway. The second
shot his moose in the wrong area. And the third shot a moose which went
into a thick area and when the moose ran out of the other side a second
shot was fired dropping it. It turned out that there was to different
moose and the hunter shot both of them. To elaborate a little more on
the footage issue, when you check the animal in you tell the wardens as
close to pinpiont where you shot the moose. They then send another warden
out to verify the kill site and the dressing area. If something doesn't
look right they will be contacting you. I hope this wasn't to long and
you all enjoy reading the story as much as I did living the experience.

I know what your saying Jeff. I'm still waiting my turn to get a
permit myself. The southern section of the state is showing some good
promise of a banner year. I'll be trying to get out myself for BP this
weekend but my "NEW" little buck at home seems to be taking up quite a
bit of time. I'm not complaining though. Soon enough he will be dragging
my deer out of the woods. Good Luck.

Good day gents.....ohhh and ladies too,

Well only one successful moose hunter down there. Sounds like you guys
don't draw many tags down there. Up here in Ontario every individual
draws a tag every second year, and if you are lucky you can draw one
every year. Up here we have a lottery which consists of two pools.
Pool one being people that didn't draw the year before and pool two for
people that had tags the year before. For pool two we usually apply in
groups of three, so we are garenteed a tag. We generally go up hunting
for two weeks in northern Ontario. We have two gangs of nine, one
gang hunts one week the other the second week, as some of us must
return home to work. This year we had 4 bull tags and 3 cow tags for
the 2 weeks. We ended our hunt with a total of 5 moose, 2 bulls and 3
cows......ohh yeah and one black bear. Three of our guys missed out on
a large trophy bull with a 60 plus inch spread. Some of guys should
look into hunting up here. There are some great lodges that offer
hunts at realitively descent prices, or for that matter set up your own
little camp as we do. If you would like any info let me know, I would
be happy to help out a fellow hunter.

    Happy and Safe Hunting!
