| My shot of choice of those two birds:
Pheasant: I use the 12 guage with '6's.
Ruff's. I use the 20 guage with 7 1/2's. low base shells.
Your choice may vary depending on terrain and shooting distance.

| Marc,
For pheasants let me suggest:
1st shot, use high a standard duck or pheasant load 6's.
2nd shot, use a standard duck or pheasant load 4's.
3rd shot, use a magnum 4 load.
Just in case 3 cocks get up at the same time. :^}
One of my friends uses 7's if the birds are holding real tight. Most
of them use 4's.
Never hunted ruffs so I dare not even guess.
Hope your pup is progressing well.
Good luck,
Mark

| It depends alot of the area you are hunting. For pheasants, I've started
using a game load #6 for the first shot. This is lighter than most
people use, but it doesn't tear up the bird as much at close range.
My next 2 shell are high powered #6.

1398.4 | 7 1/2's followed by 6's .......... | 17576::PAPPALARDO | | Tue Oct 11 1994 13:51 | 9 |

I usually start out with Hi-Brass #7 1/2's and the second round is a
#6 Hi-Brass. I'm heading to Pittsburg N.H. on friday (10/14) for the
weekend to hunt grouse and to help out "if needed" (hopefully ) on a
moose hunt. I'm torn between taking my Winchester 23 SxS in 12 gauge
or my Remington 1100 LT20 in 20 gauge but looking forward to getting
away.

i almost always use #6 for both. and have never been disappointed.
sometimes late in the season (december) i might drop to #4 in that the
shot may be a bit longer but mostly for better penetration of winter
feathers and fat.
