1394.0. ""SAD STORY"" by 17576::DILLON_D () Wed Oct 05 1994 15:37

Well folks, it's that time of the year again. Every year you hear the same
hunting horror stories, only this time it happened to us. It was 5:30 PM, Aug.
28th, supper time in Hudson, NH, and my husband went to bring our 14 month
old puppy inside to eat. We keep her in a pen, outside when we're not home.
As he always does, he opened the gate to let her out to relieve herself
before putting her on the leash. She either heard something, (he didn't),
or picked up a scent, because she went into the wooded part of our backyard.
My husband figured it was just a squirrel, she loves chasing them. Before he
could turn around and recall her, a young, heavy set man shot her with his
hunting arrow. When he heard the dog yelp, he ran to the edge of our yard
and saw him, and the man said, "The dog was coming at me, I have a right"!
My husband was in shock! At first he said it didn't register. Brandy never
barked or growled at this person. This "hunter" was in our backyard! He was
about 50 feet from our house! The "hunter" then took another arrow out and
reloaded his bow! This is where my husband grabbed Brandy and ran! She had two
large holes from the arrow in her rear leg, she was bleeding profusely. My
husband preceded quickly to get her to the Vet's, he yelled to me in the
house call the Police Brandy has been shot with an arrow. She spent two
hours on the operating table because this "hunter" thinks he "has a right".
Brandy is now home and it will probably take 6 - 8 weeks for her to heal.

Unfortunately, the "hunter" drove away in an older model, four door black car.
We have not been able to find the arrow, even with a metal detector. We
notified the police and Fish & Game.

We're looking for this person and the police will follow up on all leads we
give them. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact me
off line.

regards,

Diane

It 's possible that you can't find the arrow because the "hunter" (I
hesitate to call him that) was smart enough to find it and take it away
with him. His name and address is probably written on it.

I'm glad to hear the dog will recover. As -.1 mentioned, this bozo
probably covered his tracks. I hope you catch him and prosecute him
to the fullest extent of the law. Fortunately your husband had the
wits to get the dog to the vet. I probably would have (foolishly) gone
    after the guy.

One question, though...what was a bow hunter doing in the woods on
August 28? Finally, given that bow hunters normally scout an area
prior to the season, chances are someone would recognize a description
of the car. Interview the neighbors extensively.

    Mark.

We had a friend come over with a metal dectector and go over the whole
back yard, exactly where this guy was and we Brandy was. No luck,
he had to have picked it up before he took off. We called the fish &
game and they told us that all hunters have to have there name and
address on all arrows. The fish & game also told us if we find this
guy that they will "DEFINETLY" proscute him.

If this jerk was in the woods shooting dogs in August, I doubt he had
his name on his arrows. This guy is not a bow hunter, he is a criminal
and I hope to hell he gets caught.

I hope your dog recovers well and I hope you don't let the viloent
acts of this low life sour your views on all hunters.

    Sincerely,

    -Don Mac
    (a bow hunter)

Brandy is getting better everyday, thank God. I hope that we catch him
too. It's hard to say whether my husband would have gone after him
or not, like I said in my original note the guy re-loaded his bow, when
my husband saw that he grabed Brandy and took off, that is when he
noticed that Brandy was bleeding quite a bit. Woops, I meant to say
September 28th, it was very hard writing that note. I did find out
that Bow & Arrow season already started. We think that this guy knew
exactly where he was going because we saw him come down our street and
pull in the dirt road that goes behind our home. There are three dirt
roads and he knew exactly which one to go in. None of our neighbors
who live close by were home at the time of the incident, there were
other neighbors at the end of the street where he came out of who
saw the car and him and would recognize both. They are keeping an
    eye out for us.

    Thank you for your concern.

    Diane,

I'm sorry to hear what happened to your dog. Why don't you post
the general location of the area this happened. Most likely this SLOB
will not be behind your house for awhile or may never return which the
later is your hope. All ethical hunters will police their own ranks and
if someone see's a car and a so called hunter that is supposedly hunting
with a bow fitting both general descriptions they can take note of the
license plate number and pass it on for investigation.

what can i say that hasn't already been said, I hope your dog is doing well and that
your able to catch this slob... as someone already said, i'd be very hesitant to call
him a hunter, and hope this dosn't sour your view of all hunters...

    Thank you.

No, I have nothing against hunters. I just wish the same law applied
for bow & arrow hunters as does hunters with firearms.

We need all the help that we can get.

1394.9"General Area"17576::DILLON_DThu Oct 06 1994 15:4910
The general area in Hudson that this happened is right off Rte 102,
near Papa Gino's, Hudson Car Wash and the Hudson Plaza, where Shop &
Save is the Post Office, etc.

If any of you live close to the area please check out the posters in
Shop & Save and surrounding stores.

    Thanks

I' m really happy to hear that your dog is going to be OK. This
guy is definately not a hunter and gives all us hunters a bad name.
Believe me hunters hate these people that do things like this as
much as everyone else does because these people really give us a bad
    reputation.
The other thing I would like to talk to this clown about is if the
dog was coming at him how he shot it in the rear leg. Also after he
disabled the dog why was he renocking another arrow. I really hope you
can find out who he is and that they prosecute him fully.

1394.11'Brandy is a German Shepherd'17576::DILLON_DFri Oct 07 1994 16:2513
Again, I want to thank all of you for all your replys and info.

I don't think that I told you what kind of dog our 'Brandy' is: she
is a sweet, adorable, loving German Shepherd. She is only 14 months
old and would NEVER attack anyone. She has graduated from puppy,
basic and advanced training classes. She has been taught to be
friendly to people and other animals. If she ever did reach this kid
she probably would have licked him to death. That is the way she is.
I just thank God that she has not losted her trustfullness. She
never knew what hit her when she got shot.
