1388.0. "get your dogs started" by 38144::DUFFY () Wed Sep 21 1994 16:47

Whos dogs are ready for the upcoming season??
Been running your dog, making her swim laps in the local
puddle, working hand command to sharpen them up for opening
day, feeding them higher protein food for the extra strength
she'll need for last hours of the hunt that started off in
the blind and ended in the peasants field, been out to build
your blind with your partner, gotta make sure her spot will
    be as dry as possible.......

Does your dog seem to have a different step in the morning
since it has gotten a little chillier...mine has, she is
always going off and grabbing her leash, my whistle and duck
calls. I know I have been adding to the fire when on Saturday
and Sunday mornings I'm in front of the TV with my calls
watching the waterfowl shows. (she has tried to retrive a
couple on the screen but just can't grab them..:). I've got
my kids now (2 and 3yrs) wanting to watch the shows with us.
My daughter keeps asking me "is that you and Kelsey out there
    Dad" no BUT pretty soon.....

Who out there is waiting for that second season with your
hunting buddy, my baby is in for her 4th season now, the first
year a distant memory, she so good now I can hardly remember
all the hollering I did back then, but I'm sure first day
of pheasants she will be a bit of a social butterfly "But
dad I havn't seen DAISY DOG for almost a year now gotta
say HI" she'll say with that big LAB tongue.

I can tell she is as pumped as I am to start, it nice to see
that she is, after all she is Queen this time of year.

Just something to say to calm me down a bit. I hope everybody
    has a great year......

1388.1Working at being ready.18889::VIRGILThu Sep 22 1994 14:0723

Good advice. I love the fall. This morning while training at
a pond a flock of ~40 geese tried to land in a mowed field 40
yards from where we (Cricket my dog and I) were doing a swim-by
drill. (She was doing the swimming!)

I'm trying to finish up the water handling drills before the season
    starts. I can't wait!

I've seen geese everywhere! Last night about an hour before dark we
had 8-10 small flocks come right over us. There were 10-24 geese in
each small flock. I love it when you can hear the wing beats and the
soft chatter as they glide by......

This morning coming into work there was a flock of ~200 geese going
right over SHR3 as I pulled in........

    It's fall!

1388.2We're definitely ready, but.....37974::NELSONShorthairs..... well OK Shelties too.Wed Sep 28 1994 09:4325

We've been taking advantage of all the training days/clinics
being offered by our breed clubs.... I can honestly say, YES, we
are ready. Russ received a qualifying score for the first leg of
his Senior Hunter title on Saturday. He is pupmed !!!! I am pumped,
and the State took away the best part of the season on us this year ;-(
Those of us who take hunting woodcock seriously are really gonna miss
the first ten days without all the jerks pounding the cover for pen
    raised field chickens.

Now the bad news, or good news depending upon your view of the
situation. Russ will be unavailable for almost the entire month of
October while he and my 13 year old daughter attempt to qualify to
participate at the Westminster Kennel Club show in February. My
daughter really has her hopes high for achieving this goal, is working
real hard (and winning) with Russ so I just have to support her in
her quest. Guess thats the beauty of owning a breed which hasn't been
so pigeon-holed into one apsect of its overall potential. I run him in
the field on one Saturday and the next Saturday he is in the show ring
showing he is put together well enough to do it all.

P.S. The nine year old dog loves this, he becomes my #1 gundog again.
