1377.1First Day Report34293::SEATSTue Aug 16 1994 12:4724
Well folks opening day in Coastal South Carolina has come and gone
    with about the normal results.
There were 14 hunters on our place yesterday and only one deer was
taken. (A small Forkhorn). I personally did not get to hunt the morning
hours as I had to work but I did take a stand for a couple of hours
in the evening. Saw 3 little cowhorns 2 does and 4 skippers on the
stand and one fairly nice 6 point on the road in. I also got to watch a
Barred Owl beat a squirrel to death before eating her. That was a very
interesting contest for about 5 min. I thought the squirrel was going
to be the victor but it was not to be. That Owl was lucky that this was
a grey instead of a big ol' Fox Squirrel or I think the end result
would have been different. Skeeters were pretty bad about dark but
other than that a very relaxing couple of hours.
Sort of glad opening day is over as the normal hunting perssure on this
area is 1 or 2 people a day on couple of thousand acers and that is a
lot more productive than the crowds of yesterday.
Looks like the latest Tropical Storm is on land and heading this way
through Florida and Georgia so it might be next week before the rain
lets up pleanty of time left as our season does not go out until the
first couple of days NEXT YEAR.

                                               Good Luck And Good Hunting

    Darrell,

You lucky sucker! I wish our season was in already. I have to wait
until Oct. 1. Oh well, that gives them more time to fatten up.

Get out there and lay em' down.

1377.3I'd take the end of Oct over August any day.7057::TAREILATue Aug 16 1994 16:504

Too hot for me. There is nothing like a cool fall morning (I don't like
to sweat when I'm hunting).
1377.4Wait for October? NAAAAAAAA34293::SEATSWed Aug 17 1994 11:439
Well, October ain't that much different from August around here.
We do start harvesting does in October and we usually bring out the
dogs about that time so just consider August and September a warm up
for the next 3 months open season.
The only real problem I see with our seasons is that I have to choose
between deer and fish until January so a lot of fish go uncaught or
    deer go unhunted.

1377.5I hope I see them Oct 1!35186::VANDENBARKMakes me happy!Wed Aug 17 1994 13:3913
    Darrell,

I wish I had a violin to play right now, you have it so bad. I called
my hunting partner last night and he said he has been watching the same
3 bucks just about every night out in his alfalfa. The largest with an
est 20" spread with 10 points. The second with about an 18" spread and
the 3rd with a 16" spread, but with really long tines. I am foaming
at the mouth to sling a 125grn broadhead right through their chest. I
guess Oct will be here before you know it. I have squirrel season this
weekend and dove on Sept 1st to keep me busy until then. Get out there
    and put it on them.

I know most of you readers out there ain't interested. It's too hot.
It's too early in the year. And so on but yesterday 8/17/94 @19:55
a nice little 8 pointer (eastern count)took a trip to the freezer
    to escape the heat,skeeter,snakes ect.

    8 point and purty.
    14 inch inside spread
    138 lbs. dead weight

Sorry folks they don't git much bigger than that here.
Just consider it a 2/3 scale .The local deer are classified as
a sub-species of the Virgina Whitetail. And yes I am well aware
That they grow 'em bigger up north. In fact I have taken a few in
W.Va.,KY, VA, and the hill country of NC. But if GOD gives you
lemons make lemonade and all that jazz.

    Wess,

T'werent nuthing will probably do it 10 our so more times this year.
O'Course this is the first deer over six points I have taken in 3
years. They may be little but there are lots of 'em.
Saw 11 more yesterday evening but alas all had slick heads or little
cowhorns. (The doe tags come in October this year we expect 40-45 to be
issued in the name of herd management on the 2K acers that we hunt.)

     As an aside.

I talked to a friend of mine the other day and he said he was giving
up deer hunting because his mother keeps taking more than he does. I said
can't be true you told me last year in nov that you had taken 12 deer.
His reply was that his mother had taken 20+ last year and he had not
heard the end of it yet. And to beat it all 3 of hers were bigger than
    any deer he had taken.

This topic is making me sick. Here I sit in Georgia and my
God-child ( neice ) decided to get married on opeining day
	this year in S.C.

I've threatened the family that I may hunt the morning in Ga.
and show up for the 16:00 service in camo smelling of Red Fox
urine. They countered that I would be placed with the Groom's
side of the family. I'm still thinking about it. With any
luck, I could add some venison to the reception ;-)

P.S. Buck Master Bob ( Harris ) said to say hello to all in
the hunting file. He's counting down the days to bow season
as this year he's going traditional, selling off his compound
bow to one of thoses modern day stick throwers :-)

    Red,

A good friend of mine got married about 6 years ago on opening day of
bow season. When he told me I shook my head and told him I wouldn't be
there, he understood. Get out there and go!!!!!!!

As far as Buckmaster Bob's compound that he sold, it is doing well and
will kill a decent buck in a little over a month!

I gave 9 squirrels a haircut this weekend with my .22mag. Took my 4
year old son and had a small 4 point walk to within 10 yards of us,
he really thought that was neat.

1377.17END OF WEEK TWO34293::SEATSMon Aug 29 1994 10:5534
    Howdy,

Just to let y'all know we are still hunting down here. Friday
August 26 @ 19:10 another small deer went to the cool comfort of
    meat locker.

    Antlers: Small Forkhorn
    Weight: 98 lbs
    Range: 50 yards
Rifle: 700 Rem. in .280 (as described earlier in this topic)

Conditions: Temp in the mid 80's, Light wind from the SE, Scattered
clouds with thunder off in the west.

Friday I was in a stand overlooking about 90 acers of soybeans. With
4 groups of deer feeding starting about 18:45. Three of these deer were
antlered ( not counting 2 cowhorns) and I ended up selecting the
easiest shot forgive me but one of the others (another forkhorn) was at
more than 200yds and the last (a light six) was at almost 400yds. With
four more months of deer season it don't pay to take those 400yd shots
at least not until December. Yes I will take a 400yd shot but not when
I have a 50 in the bag so to say.

So far this year I have spent about 12 hours in the stand and have
seen around 50 deer 10 or so of which have been antlered. All in all
this is pretty typical down here 5 to 1 is about average. Almost all of
the Does I have seen have twins with them so the herd will be in need
of control to keep it healthy.

Can you say "Nice and tender"? I would like to sink my teeth into a
piece of grilled tenderloin right now!

I bet that is really nice to have a locker where you can hang them
since the weather is so warm. From the look of it so far, it had
better be a pretty big locker.

I sorry but the last tenderloin is in my lunch box right now and yes
all four were very tasty and tender after 48hrs of the secret marinade.
I will be going later today if my customers allow it since I am
"on-call" right now it may get washed out if someone needs service.
About 200 acers of corn was just shelled over the weekend so this opens
up a whole new area to hunt and a couple of decent bucks have been seen
coming up out of the marsh around dark to feed in those fields. So wish
    me luck.
Wess if you want to talk about good venison just wait till October
when the doe tags are handed out two hams plus 12 hours in a smoker
    equals one fine feed.

Friday 9/16/94 and Saturday 9/17/94 were both good days.

Friday, Got into the stand about 18:00 had approx. 30 deer in the field
one of which did not exit. Three point 102lbs and very tasty
tenderloins for breakfast sunday. Saw a nice six point at 300+ yards
and had another smaller six at around 70yrds but he stayed behind some
hay bales and I could not get a clean shot. Those two better keep an
eye out at least until January or they might just join the little 3
    point in the freezer.

Saturday, Dove Shoot -- Dove Shoot.. Had a ball the only problem I had
was that I reached the limit before I was ready and had to stop
shooting and just watch the other guys but that is part of the fun
how can you razz someone about a great miss if you are too busy to
    watch him/her do so.

With work, home and all that jazz this last friday was the first time
in the stand in over two weeks. I will stop deer hunting on Jan 2 1995
at that time I will switch to small game for a couple of months.
Shrimp baiting season just came in last week so that will be a few
nights activity over the next couple of months if I don't have any
thing else to do :-). And of course the inshore and offshore fishing is

Just got back from 2 weeks vacation didn't go more than 25 miles from
home. Fishing was great offshore but thats another notes file.
Only hunted a couple of days and the doe tags came in October 1. The
smoker has been busy and I need to go onto a diet. All in all just your
typical Sept-Oct in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

    Deer so far

8pt,4pt,3pt,and a couple of slickheads. And the rut is starting so the
buck should get stupid again at least until mid November then the
second rut will kick in about mid December until the end of season.

    Wess,

Just send 'em both down here we need the genes for the pool.

Them coyote's are still about 150mi west of here so we expect them in
a couple of years. The Armidilos are within 50mi now so I can look
forward to those at about the same time as thier speed of spread is
slower right now or main varmits are bobcats, foxes and gators. We
already have trouble with cats taking a few small deer every year
and the quail just can't get ahead of the predators but the turkeys
do seem to be doing well.

Raining today and first day back at work so I don't think I will be
going to the stand today but who knows. If I wasn't on call for after
hours work it would probably be easier to get juiced up.

1377.29The South is Still at It.34293::SEATSMon Oct 31 1994 10:3737
    Well time for another update,

     Deer taken so far,

    8pt,5pt,4pt,3pt, and three slickheads.

The latest was the five point he was taken Saturday about 5:45 EDT.

    Range approx 120yds broadside.
    Rifle/load/stats same as before.

This deer and quite a few others were really cleaning up on the acorns
under one large live oak on the edge of an area of about 200 acres of
cutover timber that has been regrowing for about 10 years can you say
thick with very limited visiability our local bowhunter just about live
in this tangle and so far have been very sucessful.

The only really bad part of hunting right now is that with over 20
inches of rain during october and the coldest night at about 55 the
skeeters will and do carry you to and from the stand for a small
donation of blood that's not all bad as that way I don't have to wade
up to 18in of water for a couple of hundred yards to get to the stand I
was hunting on Saturday at least fifty percent of this cutover area is
under standing water and has been for almost a month and we had more
    rain Sunday.

Dragging this deer out Saturday was easy he seemed to almost float well
maybe he did float. Under normal weather conditions I could have driven
my truck over this deer to pick it up instead I had a 600 yrd
drag/float with every skeeter within hearing coming over for a
    occasional snack.

    All I need now is a 6pt. and a 7pt. for a straight..

                                                  Good luck and Good HUNTING

    Darrell,

That deer didn't float he just weighed 60lbs! Ha.

I went out Saturday and had a small 7pt go by about 20 yards broadside.
I thought a bigger buck may sneak in behind him. I glanced back to
where the smaller buck was headed and spotted the larger buck, he
tricked me! A doe came in 10 yards and looked around and on the way
    out had a doe with a 14" 8point go by about 40 yards(squirrel hunter
    scaired them by me.

Gun season starts in two weeks.

    Wess,

You ain't that far off live weight was 114. Like I have said earlier
just consider them 2/3 scale. BTW if you go about 30 miles inland you
start getting into the standard species of Virginia Whitetail, not our
own Hiltonian sub-species here on the sea islands. When I took the
latest harvest to have it converted to burger I got to see a few of
these standard size deer the best of which was an eight point that
will score around 145 P&Y as this was a bow kill live weight was over
    210. It almost made me feel bad as the largest deer I have taken in the
last couple of years weighed around 175 and was only a six point he was
over 8 years old so I just consider that his prime was past. I guess I
will start hunting mornings now that Daylight Savings is over nothing
like a good deer hunt before a days work begins..

Hurry up and stick one this waiting on you is getting old,

    Darrell,

I hear you on me sticking one. My wife feels the same way. Little
does she realize that I have my Ohio lisence too!

I plan on hunting here in Ohio before work tomorrow. I can probably
just take an hour of vacation and get in a decent hunt. Of course I
haven't been over to the farm and scouted in about 3 weeks. Like my
buddy says, "You can't kill one sitting on the couch". I guess I had
better get my butt in gear.

8 year old deer is ancient! I guess the oldest deer I have taken is
probably only 3 1/2(guess). I never sent any jaws in for verification,
    so who knows.

    Good luck

1377.33THE SEASON IS HALF OVER34293::SEATSTue Nov 01 1994 16:3936
    Wess,

I was just thinking about this hunting season and something just
popped into my mind IT'S ALREADY HALF OVER ONLY TWO MORE MONTHS.
I better get busy if I wan't to have a truely memorable season.
Now if only I can find my list of friends that hunt on some of the
better trophy areas here in the South East especially my two brothers
who still live up in the mountains of North Carolina thier rifle season
    is almost in.

BTW.. On our land we plan on bringing in the dogs for the first time
this year on November 12. Just think of it 10 dogs and an equal number
of hunters after what I consider the best game animal that I have ever
    hunted.

Before any of you go off half cocked at the mention of dogs and deer
please keep in mind there are places that no human has been into on
purpose in years on this place. If you don't understand about using
dogs in our type of hunting just consider it oversized rabbit hunting.
And if any of you even think about saying anything about that absurdly
easy method of hunting by tracking deer down with the benefit of SNOW
be prepared to defend yourself Sir :-)

To learn more about the TRADITIONAL method of using hounds on deer may
I suggest that you pick up a copy of any of Archibale Rutledge's
writings from the early to mid 1900's (He wrote for a lot of the
outdoor magazines from the 20's to the 50's and some of his writings
are available as collected stories. ) Find'em if you can I think any
deer hunter would get a lot of entertainment from their reading.

And Wess one of my most memorable deer hunts was near Galipolis OH.
I actually managed to stick one of those pointy sticks into a pheasant.
Don't get too cold we are in for a cold wave here tonite temp may get
into the 40's in inland areas.

1377.34Ask for age chart34293::SEATSTue Nov 01 1994 16:5116
    Wess,

I almost forgot. Ask you local game department for a copy of the wear
chart they use to determine age from teeth. I would send you a copy of
mine but I understand that the chart we use would not be accurate. Our
deer end up eating a lot of sand and that wears the teeth faster so
using our chart on your deer would tend to give you older than true age
readings. It's easy to read just line up the pattern to the jaw in
question and read the age to the side I am seldom off more than six
months from the reading done on all our deer at the end of the
season by our local wildlife dept.

Any Snow yet?? My wifes family are in W.Va and she just got back from a
visit FROST EVERY DAY (Buurrrr) but no snow for them so far.

    Darrell,

No wonder the deer aren't as big if all they eat is sand!

I went out this morning for a few hours and didn't see anything except
a few squirrels. The deer have left the section of woods I was in for
the most part. I think I will try it again Friday morning.

Arrowed a pheasant, good shot. I nailed a gray squirrel last weekend
from about 22-25 yards. I think it was mostly luck.

It was very frosty this morning. My face is beat red from the cold
    wind. Gotta love it!
