1358.0. "E-nickle vs black chrome?" by 20248::MILLER () Fri Apr 01 1994 13:09

    	Am in process of purchasing new rifle. Am considering either the
    	new Remington Alaskan Wilderness or a Weatherby Mark V Alaskan. The
	Remington is advertised with a black chrome stainless action/barrel.
	The Weatherby is E-Nickle. I am asking if anyone out there has
	knowledge of the black chrome in terms of wear, smoothness of action,
	accuracy, etc. I understand that E-nickle makes for a very smooth and
	durable finish? I know there can be significant differences of opinion
	on the locking lugs etc for Remington versus Weatherby but from what I
	can tell this aspect comes down to personal preference/opinion. No
	pricing issue as the cost for both is about the same. Any experienced
	feedback available?

    	Thanks,
    	Walt

1358.1Its not a gun Its a Weatherby16616::MELENDEZTue Apr 19 1994 19:2410
    I have a Weatherby Mark V Ultra Mark (the last one Weatherby sold).
    It is 300 Mag and is an incredible weapon. Its much like a mouse just
    point and click. Very Acurate, Very reliable, I love it, It will take
    any north american animal, Mine has 4 deer and Two elk. Remington
    makes a nice weapon, but Weatherby makes a masterpiece. The Weatherby
    store here in southgate has some super deals if you known an FFL they
    can ship directly to you. (used guns and Seconds at great prices)
    213 569 7186 is the number.

    	Thanks for the feedback. I have decided to go with the Weatherby
    	Alaskan for a number of reasons. The pricing ended up being almost
    	$400 difference with the Remington the higher. I am concerned that
    	the black chrome finish is new technology for Remington where the
    	E-nickle has been around for a bit and seems to work well. The
    	delivery on the Remington is limited to a few outlets as it is
        coming out of Remington's custom shop which can take 6 months or
    	more unless you catch a dealer that has preordered a large
        quantity. I expect to received the Weatherby about the end of
    	May and will update the note with initial experience.

1358.5300 or 300 which shall it be?16616::MELENDEZThu Apr 21 1994 16:3032
    I have a friend here who hunts with the Winchester 300 mag, I have the
    Weatherby 300 mark V Ultramark. At about $2500.00 its a bit steep but I
    dont think I will ever have to buy another deer riffle.. It has a
    muzzel brake (highly recomended as a bare bones 300 mag of either
    manufacture will kick you butttttttttttttttttt..........
    I reload my own rounds and have used both weapons. The weatherby is a
    little more costly in that cases are more expensive to purchase. but
    you can buy reminton cases in weatherby 300 mag. I use Nosler balistic
    tip 180 and higher grain bullets. They are the best I have used, the
    Nosler manual reloading guide use's the weatherby case's and I have
    found that I can load a more accure, and fast round with these cases.
    If you are going to by a weatherby call them and see if they have
    seconds or demo models. It can save you half the cost of new.. The
    seconds generaly have problems with the finnish on the stock. Afew
    hours and the thing will look good and the work to do it is not to hard
    to do to refinish the stock. A round with 98 grains of powder, 180
    grain Nosler Balistic tip will go through 1/2 inch plate steel at 250
    yards, You will also be able to place the rounds into a quarter at the
    same distance from a bench rest. The winchester 300 mag is not as
    accurate, granted I have worked up the load and it is better than the
    factory loads my friend uses. I have started him reloading so maybe
    with a little work we can work up a load that is just as accurate.
    The 300 winchester is cheaper to feed, and kicks a lot more. Also
    weatherby sells seconds on shotguns and big bore guns. I have seen a
    455 weatherby mag sell for 450 at the store. If you are after
    Mastadons or something that big its a great round. 300 weatherby mag
    also has a slitely higher speed and a slightly flatter trajectory.
    Ammo can be a problem if You dont reload your own.
    You can get ammo from Gander MOuntain if you need it.
     hope This helps

1358.6thanks, muzzle break coming2956::MILLERThu Apr 21 1994 23:419

    	Yes, thanks very much. I do have access to a large quantity of
    	the Weatherby .300 mag brass and was planning on reloading. I
    	am fond of the Nosler bullets in 150 and 165 grain for .308 and
    	30-06 and will certainly be setting up a load in 180 grain for
    	Elk. Looking forward to the arrival and yes did include the
    	muzzle break in the order.

    I use hearing aids to reduce the noise from the muzzle break. It also
    helps top hear the game running arround. You will need hearing
    protections...

    How much 300 mag brass do you have? are you willing to part with any?

1358.8?17576::MACGREGORCody's Dad and Dukes BuddyMon Apr 25 1994 09:4210
    I reload my Winchester 300 Mag. I can get it to within 30 fps of the
    Weatherby if I wanted to. I don't know about it not being as accurate
    ass the Weatherby, I find mine very accurate. I have found that my 300
    Win Mag shoots great at 3100 fps with 180 Nosler Balllistic Tips and I
    don't have any qualms about taking a shot at game out to 300 yards with
    just putting the cross hairs on the target. I will agree it kicks like
    hell, maybe someday I will invest in a muzzle break. I have a question,
    do you guys think Magna-Porting is better than a muzzle break or the
    other way around?
    							Bret
1358.9half step34838::ROGERShard on the wind againMon Apr 25 1994 11:054
    Magna porting is a half step. Less recoil reduction, less noise to the
    shooter, less money........

1358.10keeping what I have for now2956::MILLERMon Apr 25 1994 13:587

    	Have 109 pieces of what appears to be once fired and 37 pieces of
    	unfired factory that I picked up at a flea market for $20. Would
    	prefer to hold onto what I have for now. I do see it from time to
    	time and will let you know if I come across any additional stocks.

1358.11Brass aint Brass16616::MELENDEZMon Apr 25 1994 19:1213
    I have been buying once fired from weatherby for 10 bucks for 20.
    New cases have cost me 21 bucks for new unprimed.
    I have about 80 rounds now. I also have 50 rounds of Remington Brass.
    I have never been able to get as good a load out of it though.
    Regarding (-2) I will find out what the Velocity and presures are and
    let you Know. On the Magnaport, I have a friend who had a 7mm done
    that way. He was out in Montana on a cold day and the thing broke off.
    I would think that a screw on device would be better than cutting holes
    in your barrel..
