1353.0. "BRADY II on its way !!!" by AVALCH::CALDERA () Wed Mar 02 1994 14:49

If you thought we NRA people were exaggerating in note #1345, read
the attached note I copied from FIREARMS. It is on its way "BRADY II",
and it IS going to effect YOU this time. I heard Representative
Charles Schumer the other day saying, "WE are back and we are the NRA's
worst nightmare", "this time it is going to be manditory gun liecencing
for any one who wants to own a gun. I hope you don't take this as me
just "busting them on you", Yes I do want all people that hunt to join
the NRA, but not because I asked you to but because if you don't help
the NRA to protect your rights to have a gun, you are going to loose that gun.

PLEASE, read the attached and consider joining the NRA.

WASHINGTON (Reuter) - James Brady celebrated the first day
of a gun control law bearing his name with a call Monday for
Congress to pass stricter licensing laws.
Ohio Democrat Senator Howard Metzenbaum and New York
Democratic Representative Charles Schumer appeared at a news
conference with Brady on Capitol Hill, outlining ``Brady II,'' a
bill that would add new nationwide gun licensing and registration
    requirements.
Brady, the former White House press secretary who was
crippled in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan,
and his wife Sarah fought for seven years for passage of the
first Brady Act, which as of Monday requires five-day waiting
periods and background checks for handgun purchases.
Brady and his supporters dismissed as a ``blip'' the surge
of gun purchases reported in the last few days by buyers trying
to beat the deadline. They said they were confident that the
statistics in the next year would show the legislation, signed
by President Clinton November 30, would be effective in curbing
    gun violence.
Metzenbaum and Schumer are introducing a bill that would
require licenses for gun owners and registration of gun
purchases and transfers, much like drivers are licensed and car
    purchases registered.
Clinton announced in Chicago Monday that the federal
government was taking steps to severely restrict rapid- fire
shotguns called ``street sweepers'' and another assault weapon
called the USAS 12. Manufacturers would have to pay a new tax on
those weapons, and sales would be restricted.
Attorney General Janet Reno also marked the first day of the
law by touring crime-hit areas of Boston, and addressing
prosecutors and poliice. ``Brady is the first step. Now we must
    move forward,'' she told reporters.
Gun control, fervently opposed by the powerful National
Rifle Association, has been a tough battle in Congress, which is
still wrestling with a ban on assault weapons.
Another gun control group, not affiliated with Brady and
Handgun Control Inc, proposed banning all handguns but Schumer
and Metzenbaum said they believe their proposal will be both
politically feasible as well as effective in thwarting gun
    runners and criminals.
Brady, who said he lost his favorite Stetson cowboy hat at a
celebratory ``end of the wild west'' party with his family and
staff Sunday night, said, ``While there is clearly reason to
celebrate, we know that there is much more to do.''
``Today I begin the campaign for 'Brady II,' a comprehensive
legislative plan to end America's epidemic of gun violence.
Sarah and I are in this for the long haul. For as long as it
takes until we can proudly say that the United States has a
sensible national gun control policy,'' he said.

And might I add, please tell your fellow hunters to join the NRA.
I am amazed at the amount of hunters that are not members.

I don't recall seeing your name in this file very often if at all, but be
aware that most, if not all of the members of this file do read the firearms
file also, and are aware of whats happing to our RKBA, are probably all NRA
members, are calling/writing our reps, and are donating $$ when possible.
So in the future please keep in mind that we are all in this together. "United
we conquer, divided we fall"...

comments such as "effect YOU this time", and "It won't effect ME..." do nothing
but turn people off. For the record, it DID effect US the last time!

    Fra,
I believe there are still some members of this file that are not
members of the NRA. Those that are not members of the NRA need a wakeup
call. Maybe this might do it. It's sad that with the amount of hunters
out there that they are not members of the NRA. What are there, 20 to
30 Million hunters (I'm guessing here) and only 3 million NRA members?
I would think that percentage wise it would be pretty close in this
file also. If these people don't join it may be too late. There is
power in numbers and we need those numbers NOW!

    	70 million gun owners
    	 3 million NRA

I did not mean for this to get too political, we are all in the same boat
here. If my tone or manner sounded as if I were bashing hunters it was not
meant in that way at all. I was a hunter long before I joined the NRA, I am a
hunter and my goal was to alert other hunters as to what was happening out
there. I know that many, maybe even all HUNTING noters are NRA members and
I did not mean to sound as if few or no noters were NRA members. The last
thing I would want to do is to make it seem as if there are two groups here,
we are all one family with one common attribute, we all enjoy guns and gunning
in some form or fashion and want to continue doing so. One major goal of the
anti's is to try and separate the people who own guns into different camps.
This was exemplified by Bill Clinton several times when, first when he went
duck hunting at Thanksgiving and again around the time he signed Brady, when
he spoke of our heritage of hunting and how he was a part of that heritage.
To me, we are all one, regardless of weather you shoot paper, clay or meat.
If in my editorializing I sounded like a jerk, please forgive me, it was
brought on by being too afraid of what my happen and too enthusiastic about
trying to prevent it.

Cordially,

Paul
