1340.0. "$10,000 Shotgun" by USCTR1::DRUM () Wed Jan 26 1994 13:22

Lew Horton's on route 9 East in Framingham has an antique "Punt Gun"
hanging on the wall used to hunt waterfowl years ago. The price on
the tag attached to the gun is $10,000. There are markings on the gun
which indicate it was mounted on something, most likely a boat.
The gun is much larger than a regular shotgun and looks like it good
very well deliver the lethal charge which these guns were known for.

Horton's has quite a selection of hunting & fishing equipment and
Old Town Canoes, so there's plenty to look at besides the Punt Gun.
Also, upstairs from Horton's is the Ski Mart. I find Horton's new
location much better than the old one and it's been a good place
to burn up some time when I'm in the area.

    Regards,

    Marshall

The punt gun was mounted in, are you ready for this, a punt (small
boat). It was semi permanantly mounted in the boat. The gunner waited
until the ducks were rafted up on the water and then would aim the gun by
maneuvering the boat with the oars to get the best shot. They were
outlawed the same time market hunting ended.
If you happen to be in Hortons on a Saturday or Tues-Wed. nights say
hi. I've worked there part time for 5 yrs.

Bass Pro shop has one of the punt gun boats on display in their
store in Springfield, MO. Huge diameter barrel on that thing.
Must have made for hell of a ride when they touched the thing off.
1340.3Be careful of Horton's prices.CHIPS::DACOSTAThu Jan 27 1994 15:258
Although Lew Horton's carries a large selection of items, I've
found the prices to be too high to even be considered. On many
guns for example, I've found he charges list +. For example,
Horton's wanted $1,395 for a Browning Citori Gr I, and at Kittery
Trading Post, I bought the same gun for $1,095.

Horton's has never tried to be the cheapest guy on the block. They
have kept in buisness the last 50+ years by offering a wide selection
and offering solid advice. Hortons does discount the great majority
of there guns. At least 95% are below retail by 10 to 20%. When you
look at a gun in Horton's you'll notice two prices on the tag. The
first price is retail and next to it is the selling price. In the five
years I have worked there, the only guns I have ever seen above retail
were guns that were in extremely high demand and the supply was low.
In all cases the increased price was a direct result of wholesalers
bumping their price to the retailer. Horton's will give you a
five year warrentee on _any_ new gun you purchase there, free of
charge. They also warrentee there used guns, free of charge. In an
age where the neighborhood gun store is a dying breed, Horton's
continues to do very well by offering a wide selection, fair prices,
and exceptional service before, during and after the sale.
