1333.0. "Georgia Quail Plantations" by PRKBBQ::WELLS (Cakes useless if you can't eat it too!) Tue Dec 28 1993 00:40

Any Georgia quail hunters out there?

My dad who's in NH has requested some information about quail hunting
trips in Georgia. He's bird hunted his whole life, and has an
excellent English Setter he uses for grouse, woodcock, pheasants, and
the dog even retrieves ducks in the cold season. But he's never been
crate trained and so flying is probably out for the dog, and I doubt
he's going to drive down. He's generally opposed to the game farms,
but he has heard of some "quail plantation" places that have organized
hunts where they supply the dogs. He'd like to find a place that he
can do like 1/2 day hunts, and maybe stay outside the place somewhere
or maybe even with me, to keep the cost somewhat down. He'd like to go
in the spring, so he can still hunt every day in the fall(he's got a
camp on the Canadian border in Pittsburgh NH). I assume these private
places can hunt at any time since it's private land, is this true?
Also I gotta say again, the more commercial it is the less he'll like
it. He really would rather just go himself but just doesn't know the
area and how to go about getting his dog down here. I'm new to the
North Atlanta area myself, so am not sure where to begin looking and
    give him some price estimates.

So does anyone have any suggestions on where to start looking? Are
there any travel agents that specialize in this kind of stuff? Any
local magazines/papers/gun clubs I can start to look through?

    Thanks in advance
    Tim

1333.1I've done some checkingSALEM::MAZEROLLEThu Dec 30 1993 08:5217
Hi, funny you should ask. Over the last several weeks I have sent away
for MANY pamplets on quail hunting. I found any of the places in
Georgia to be completely out of any sensible price range. For a one day
hunt prices ranged from 450.00 to 895.00. That included lodging, meals,
    etc but still...

I did find a place in South Carolina that seemed much less
commercialized and priced more to my liking. I think they had half and
full day hunts and they were priced somewhere around 75.00 per gun for
half day hunts. This place also had a sporting clay range so we figured
we'd do some half day hunts and some sporting clay shooting in between.

I have never been there before but it seems like it is a NO FRILLS
operation. I plan to call the local BBB to see if there are any
    complaints with the place, etc.

If you like I can post the name and # of the place next week ?

Yes, please do post this info.

I've got a bunch of numbers from various magazines but haven't made
the phone calls yet. If I get anything useful I'll post it.

    Thanks
