I would go with a Remington 1100 or even the 870 pump, over the
Winchester. I like the way a Remington feels over the Winchester
or Mosberg, and also how they break down for cleaning.
Check K-Mart, they have good buys on Remington.
Of course its just my opinion.

Going to a Remington was my first thoughts when reading the base note
too. I don't know why Winchester stops producing a decent gun when they
have one. I think the Super-X was the best auto shotgun they ever made
but stopped makeing it around the late 70's. They also had a good auto
rifle, model 100 they stopped makeing along with the model 88 lever.

| Chris,
I used to run sporting goods for a Wal-Mart store about 6 years ago and
about 30% of the Mossberg 500 I sold came back. I take it you liked
yours?
A couple of friends of mine have the Mossberg 3 1/2 and love it. I use
the Remington 870 Express which you can pick up at Wal-Mart for
$209.00. It isn't a fancy looking shotgun, but it shoots great and you
can get about any screw-in choke your heart desires. I use it for
everything and have never had any problem with it what-so-ever.
Of course it isn't a semi-auto, but it's almost 1/2 the price!

1321.4 | Think I'll go with the Remington. | 58205::CHRISBELL | | Thu Nov 18 1993 08:42 | 18 |
| Thanx for all the input so far. I have called practically *every* gun
shop on the east coast of Mass and then some and they all say that the
semi-auto' aren't worth the money you pay for them (almost 2x that of a
pump.) So I think I'm going to lean toward the Remingtom 870. I'm
going to the Outdoor Store in Natick this afternoon and I'll probably
leave with the 870.
Iv'e had my Mossberg for about 10 years now and "never" had an ounce of
problems with it. I know other guys who have had them and had nothing
but trouble with them. One guys firing pin kept falling out! I just
figured its time to upgrade, and I sold it for $75 MORE than I paid for
it.8^)...
I'll let you know what I pick up...
Thanx again... Chris... Who'll be in Townsend
State Forest Opening Day.
I'll be the guy in orange.8')..

1321.5 | Love my Remington!! | 27748::BUTCH | No Shortcut Too Short | Thu Nov 18 1993 13:10 | 10 |
| I shoot an 870 and they'll have to pry my cold dead fingers off
it to get it away. You name it, I've shot it with my baby. If you do
get it, you won't be sorry. I've never had an ounce of trouble with it.
My only regret is that it's chambered for 2 3/4 only. But thats OK. If
I want to go duck hunting with steel shot, I use my Dads 1100 3". But
in the pre-steel era, I've dropped my share of ducks and geese. I'll
never need another shotgun. Good luck...

| Yes, I'll repeat that I have never had any problems with my 870,
and I've believe I've gone to hell and back with it.....its not the
most fancy gun in the world but it is well worth the price (rugged
gun). If I were to replace my gun I would by the same gun again.
Of course Kelsey and Bay (my labs) think I should shoot better with
it, but thats their opinoin.

1321.8 | Decision made | 58205::CHRISBELL | | Fri Nov 19 1993 09:40 | 13 |
| I finally made a decision. I went to Wal-Mart in Bellingham last nite
and picked up the Remington 870 Express Magnum Combo. Came with a 20"
slug barrel, 28" ventrib and a Imp. Cyl choke. Gun is chambered for
2 3/4" or 3" and holds 5 rounds. Price was very reasonable, beat
everyone else by at least $30, some as hi as $100. I paid $289.
Now I just have to sight it in...
Well 'A huntin I will go!!!
Thanx again for all the input and I hope all have a SAFE and succesful
hunt...
