1310.0. "Elk 93..." by TWNPKS::CORBETTKE () Fri Oct 15 1993 13:50

    A note for all you elk hunters out there.

    I know it's early, but there are some archers and muzzleloaders out
    there as evidenced by an article in the morning paper.

    It seems some muzzleloaders over around Yakima, Wa had spotted a herd
    of elk in a stand of trees. They surrounded the area and wiped out the
    entire herd but two. Out of 23 bulls, cows and calves, only 1 cow and
    1 calf escaped. It was all legal, but it sure didn't help the elk
    population in that valley. Also, it was extremely bad form and I
    expect something to come out of it.

    How many gunman were there in this blood bath? What is the bag limit
    on Elk out there? This really makes the rest of us that are
    responcible hunter look as if we condone this type of senceless
    slauter and gives us all a black eye. They all should be strung up
    right next to there victoms. More bad press, just what gun owners and
    hunters need at this point. Somehow they will turn muzzleloaders into
    asault weapons.

    Sorry for flameing on but stuff like this really gets me going,

1310.2I hope it doesn't affect later huntsDECWET::BAKER"I know where you're going"Wed Oct 20 1993 20:0211
    WOW, I had not heard about this. As a Washington hunter this really
    burns me a bit. I am slotted for a trip to the yakima area in November
    for the late Elk hunt. This just may spoil my hunt. I have a Cow
    permit to accompany my bull tag.

    I'm going to have to check this out. For those who don't know, when
    you buy an Elk tag you have to designate where you are going. Me, I'm
    going to Yakima.

1310.3Bag limit in WADECWET::BAKER"I know where you're going"Wed Oct 20 1993 20:067
    btw: The bag limit out here is only one.

    As I stated in the previous note I have a cow permit to go with my bull
    tag. If I get a cow I can not get a bull.

    Well after cooling off, and doing a little more research I found out --
    "The Rest Of The Story".

    Everything that happened in this hunt was legal. The proper ammount
    of hunters were there for the proper ammounts of kills.

    This was just a fraction of the herd that is located in the Yakima area
    (high thousands).

    I think it got the bad press from the Antis and also because the
    Director of Fish & Game failed to provide his findings.

    I depart this Sunday for the area for the week. Hope to get my first
    Elk (cow). If not the "bull" season opens the following week.

    Good luck to all this weekend
    Steve
